...  I have my the main copy of my Bible linked to TSK with link set A and have my secondary copy set to "send links here" for looking up cross-references, etc.

    Hope that helps Smile

    Ron

EDIT: Oh, I also have my inductive Bible set to "Bible Text Only" so that it doesn't display pericope headings.

Ron, on these part of your instructions, can you tell me what linking those items does for you?  That might help me to understanding linking.

    Thanks, Gloria

Hi Gloria, glad to here you are making some progress.  I hope the following screenshot illustrates for you what ron is acheiving by using the setup you have asked about.

LInking means that resources move together. For example, if you have two Bibles with both set to Link set A then they will both display the same reference, when you move one the other will move. When you link a Bible and commentary together then the Commentary automatically moves with the Bible to display its treatment of that version.

Having a second instance of a Bible open with "Send Hyperlinks Here" selected allows you to click Bible reference links in the commentary without upseting the apple cart. In other words if you were studying 2:4 and clicked a link in the commentary to 4:8 then the Bible and Commentary would both jump to the new verse. By having a second Bible open with the "send hyperlinks here: selected then any Bible link clicked will open in that pane instead of the Bible linked to the commentary?

Is that clear? Visit http://wiki.logos.com/Linking_Resources for pictures and a more detailed explanation.

Thanks, again, Kevin (and Andrew above).  I am sooooooooooo excited.  I actually have my layout done, and am going to start tweaking it.  I have to figure out what kind of word study link I want to use.  Before purchasing Logos, I had spent $$ on the 4 book Zodhiates (OT& NT) books, and didn't want to spent the $$ to purchase them here, but I may have to.  I have the Scholars Software package, so I'm not sure about the word study books that it comes with, and so far whenever I have tried to use it for word study when I plan my bible study, there is just too much information, so....I'm wondering about that, but not sure if I should search some here on the forum before I ask questions, but...

This is my first time on a forum, so I'm not sure what the proper way of asking questions and responding works, so I should read about that, and NOTICE that my e-mail address isn't showing up any more.  You guys are great teachers.  Maybe I should just have you come and lead the bible study.  ;)

Gloria,  a couple of suggestions.  Have you tried the Bible Word Study Report.  This will hep you access the resources you have in your library.

There is a video you can watch on how it works at:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B40vPTRVJXY

If you really want to gete Zodhiates in Logos then I recommend you take a look at the AMG Bible Essentials package:

    http://www.logos.com/products/details/1510

It includes his materials.  Althought it comes on a CD for Libroinx 3. You can use this with Logos 4 also.  It works out much cheaper to buy the package rather than the individual titles. This is how I got these titles in my library.

You can find more books that Logos has classified as Word Study at the following link:

    http://www.logos.com/products/groups/allitems/reference-word-studies

Since you have scholars library though i recommend you always check in your library before making a purchase, somettimes there are resources you might already have that you didn't realise you already owned.

    Hi Andrew:

Thanks for your input.  I have seen and actually used that resource.  The problem I am having is the "prioritizing" of my resources.

I am very new to word study.  I have no knowledge of the resources that I own with my scholars pack and which ones are best, etc.  Because I have only used the Zodhiates resources, I kind of feel safe with them.  I certainly would/could use what I have, but I don't know which are best.  Same with the concordances. Which are good, which are junk.

I would check them out when I first got Logos, but what happened then is that I ended up reading and reading and reading, and before I know it, I had 3 hours in and no more understanding than when I started.

It's all Greek to me.  I mean, Nestle???What's that beside a candy company???  Reverse Linear???  Add to that, that I don't even know what a hyperlink is, and you can see why I spend more time trying to get...well, anywhere.  But I keep reading here, and checking out the links you folks recommend, and I'm gleaning.

There is certainly a lot to learn at first. But keep perservering with it, it is worth while.  Try not to bite off too much at once. Focus on one aspect of the software and understanding how that works and think about how you might use in your bible study before moving on to the next part of the program.  Take a similar approach with resources, I know there's a lot in there but try to focus on becoming familar with one or two resources at at time.  Look thought the table of contents to see what it includes, read the preface and any other introductory materials.

As you work thorugh aspects of the program and the different resources, if you can find the information you are looking already on the forum or the wiki or training videos start a new question on the forum.  Try to make the question as specific as possible.

Two books you have in scholars I suggest you start reading are How to Study the Bible and Handbook of Bible Study.  There are not going to directly answer some of the things you are asking here but will help you to think about how you are wanting to approach you study of the bible.  Having a plan of attack is the first part of the battle. Once you know what it is you want to do, you can then think about how you do it using Logos 4.  Are you familar with reading plans ?  If not then try working on setting up a reading plan for one of these books and if you run into issues post a question about the problem you are having in making it work.

You mentioned Reverse Interlinear above is ther something specific you want ot know about them.  Please feel free to start a new post asking about it.

You can use the Library window to learn what you have (i too have the Scholars package). i would suggest starting by viewing the different types of books that you have. You can learn to do this here Tip – quick way to find books by type (it is a subtopic on the wiki page Library). This wiki page can guide you in many ways (e.g. setting up priorities, ratings, & tagging). As Andrew mentioned, you should start slowly so as not to become overloaded. Then things will start to fall into place. Also whenever you get stuck you can come here to the forum to ask questions.

Edit: the text above which are in Blue are links to wiki pages that you view on your browser (e.g. you are using your browser to view this forum). Just left click on the blue text and it will open another tab/window of your browser to that wiki page.

    Hi Gloria,

Sorry, I logged off after answering your question, so didn't see this one until later.  I see that Kevin and Andrew got you taken care of [:)]

Just to add slightly to what they've said: In regard to this particular layout, you have your Bible linked to the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge (TSK).  What that does is has TSK "follow" you as you read through your Bible.  When you scroll your Bible, the TSK automatically scrolls with it to stay in sync with whatever verse your Bible is currently on.  As Kevin and Andrew explained, you can link many types of resources: multiple Bibles, Bibles with commentaries, etc.

I also see that you mentioned not knowing what hyperlinks are.  Hyperlinks are the blue underlined text that you can click on to go to the cited location.  For example, in the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, all those cross-references are hyperlinks.  If you click on them, they take you to that particular scripture reference.  That is why you have a second Bible open and set to "send hyperlinks here"...that way, when you click on one of the scripture references, it opens in your second Bible without disturbing your primary Bible.  This allows you to "rabbit trail" through scripture without losing your place.

    Hope that helps! [:)]

Ron, on your screenshot, the "highlight" column is nice and thin.  I can't minimize it on mine, and it is wider.  I would like to make it a bit smaller.  So, I was wondering if you could tell me how to do that, or do you have a widescreen?

    Thanks, Gloria

I do have a widescreen...I believe the highlighting toolbar is a fixed size and can't be resized.  Sorry [:(]

It opens automatically in a fixed size column. However, If you drag the tab to a new location its size can be customized. Or if you drag the word "Highlighting" from the Tools menu you can place it in your layout like a book or guide etc.

    I stand corrected...I guess I should have checked before I answered. [:$]

I like your layout and have done my best to duplicate it. One problem I'm having - I have my other Bible set up for hyperlinks etc., but it also is displaying my highlights. I notice yours does not seem to be doing that - can you help me out, please? What am I missing?

I love Precept and am excited to try it on Logos. My mother was a Precept teacher back in the early days of the organization.

    Thanks!

Nothing, this is a limitation of Logos, if you have multiple copies of a resource open the visual filters displayed will be the same between the two of them. The reason why the picture in question doesn't have have highlights is likely because that passage hadn't been marked up yet. You could get around this by using a different translation for the Bible hyperlinks.

Thanks Kevin - that is helpful. Disappointing, but helpful.

Do you know of a place where I can find a fuller Precept markup pallet? Is it possible to import one if such a thing exists?

You can't import other people's palettes into your copy of Logos. However you can create your own palette (first duplicating the existing Precept palette to save time - right click on the palette name to do so). You can find more in this video, or on the Wiki.

Thanks so much Mark! I appreciate that. It will take a long time to create all the different markings, but should be worth it!

    Hey JW,

Thanks for that! I took a look, and those instructions don't seem to be working for me. I have Logos 4 for Mac, and can't find that visualmarkup.bp file anywhere on my system. I'll check over there to see if there's a work around at all, or something that I'm just missing.

    Thanks!
