Any thought to testing an L4 script for new resources?

I understand that NICOT/NT is supposed to be out today. That made me realize I'll have to fire up L3, which made me wonder what will happen after L4 goes live. I'm assuming we won't need L3 to purchase materials after L4 is live, but we've not been testing any methods for purchasing and adding new resources to our libraries (though I realize we've been given some new resources - thank you!).
So, here's the question: are we going to be testing an L4 script, or other method for importing new resources directly into L4 (bypassing L3)?
If you're looking for volunteers, I'd love to give it a try. I'm using L4 almost exclusively these days anyway.

Just restart Logos 4 once your credit card has been charged, and the program will start downloading the NICOT/NICNT volumes like any other automatic update. (Assuming that you purchased via the "Download" option; if you purchased on DVD, you will have to wait until the DVD with the serial number makes it all the way from Bellingham to Alger, then activate it in LDLS3.)

So you're saying that you've turned on the feature to download any new resources now? (not just the L4 ones) And if I buy any new resource L4 will now get it automatically?

No—it is just NICOT/NICNT for now (because Rich asked so nicely, and because it's only 40 files).
We're preparing the rest of the resources to be available for automatic download, but this needs to wait until Beta 7 is released. (Beta 6 contains a bug that could cause it to crash for users with large libraries who were missing thousands of resources.)

I see 40 vols of NICOT\NICNT loaded up on the server.... watching for the "Live" button to appear....
Would love to try out the L4B6 download of newly purchased resources

Hmm... NICOT\NICNT was live... now it is back "Under Contract"
Only an hour and 15 minutes before closing... doesn't look hopeful [:(]

I called sales and was told they are not even able to process the download orders for NICOT/NICNT yet and that I could not get both the CD and the download. I have to get one or the other. Not sure why, as I already bought the license. Guess I will have to wait for snail mail to the East Coast. [:^)]

My NICOT\NICNT download order was just processed.... trying to get L4B6 to download the files... might have to revert to the old method... will wait and try opening L4B6 again.... wanted to see if the download within L4 really works.
Jim
EDIT: The download does work... my download message popped up... downloading 144 mg of books and then watch it index all night [;)]
EDIT 2: The indexing has begun... it is indexing the new resources... it would be nice to have a "Stop Indexing" or a "Index All Resources" type button on the tray icon. I would like to index all my resources... as is I will have to wait for the indexing of new resources then tell L4 to reindex....
Just a thought,
Jim

No, NO, NO .... I don't want the Targums. I don't want my missing resources anytime!
As a corollary, I don't want updated versions of my L3 resources unless they have been converted to L4 format!

Even though I asked really nicely, I still haven't gotten a notice that my card has been charged and restarting L4 isn't downloading the NIC. Now where was that article on patience I was supposed to read? (Friday, 10-16-09, 9:38pm PDT)

Yes! Came last night about 10:30.
When I first started L4 it didn't pick up the resources. Typed "Autoupdate Now" in the command box and the download started.
(BTW, nice to see the forum back up again.)

Beta 7 won't download resources that you have hidden in the program.
(Edit: If you've been manually moving resource files and tweaking your library already, you'll need to discover the resources before you can hide them.)

Hi Rich, I was doing it in L3 with the hope that I could "fool" L4 but the "cloud' is all-knowing and all-seeing and was displeased ... and rained fire and toads upon me ... oh wait, that was another time long long ago and hopefully very far away. [:)]

I don't have them on my computer either. Does that mean I have to download them before I can hide them so I don't download them?

Bradley,
Targums have been permanently removed from v3 for some time, because they cannot be effectively & completely hidden by v3 (and this stratagem has been extensively debated in the newsgroups). I do not want them to be discovered by v3, and having to download stuff in order to hide it from L4 is not acceptable, especially considering the additional HDD space that is required.
The point is this, if Logos know what our missing resources are L4 should provide a choice of downloading them or hiding them in the "cloud" and NOT on our computers.

All my hidden v3 resources are in L4 as well because it snaps up all unlocked resources in the v3 Resource Path. The implication of hiding resources in L4 is that they must be available to L4, but I do not want resources I have deliberately deleted to be available to v3 as well.

Beta 7 will add a resource hiding feature.

Beta 7 still hasn't shipped yet... would taking away the hiding feature avoid this "unacceptable" problem? [:)]
In general, we expect that most users will need to see a resource at least once in order to know whether they want to hide it or not, so we're not providing an option to hide a resource sight unseen. Upgrading LDLS3 users who have manually managed their libraries will need to discover the resource at least once in order for it to appear in the Logos 4 UI so that they can hide it.

Logos 4 Beta 7 will provide an option to truly hide resources. (And this will sync to your other computers, so they'll be hidden for you everywhere.)

If implemented by autodownloading "missing" resources before being able to hide them, then take away that implementation! As stated earlier, I'd like to know what L4 considered "missing" and be given the choice of "hiding" or downloading. It was stated very early that many users have deliberately hidden resources from v3 by deleting them, so that I'm not sure where that "expectation" was gained.
I'm also sure that most users would like to know what they have been missing rather than suddenly discovering extra resources in Library and wondering what was happening!
EDIT
The earlier discussion on hiding is at http://community.logos.com/forums/p/1266/10571.aspx#10571

Seems to me that this is probably not a big deal for US users who have a broad-band connection and unlimited download capacity. But it is an issue for those with dial-up (and other non-broadband connections), those with download restrictions (AKA Australians), and those who serve in countries that may monitor internet activities (places where Christians are persecuted -- I'm thinking of local pastors and missionaries here). Both of these later categories should be considered and users given control over what and how much is downloaded any given time. Not doing so, may prove unnecessarily costly for some brothers and sisters around the globe.
They way the L3 update system worked was helpful for these situations, but I don't know how that may be implemented in L4. The bottom line here, is that some end-users need at least an option for full control of their downloads.

Unfortunately, Beta 7 will be incompatible with your previous library management strategy. (From the program's perspective, your advanced library management looks exactly like the average user's inability to reinstall all purchased CDs on a new computer, a bug we are trying to fix. Yes, this could be perhaps be solved by providing an option or prompt, but that is not currently in Beta 7.)
I suggest that you discover all your unwanted resources in Beta 6 (e.g., by scanning an old LDLS3 CD) so that you're ready to hide them after you install Beta 7.

Bradley,
What about multiple versions of BHS that have changed over the years? Also will B7 redownload E7 resources and other third party vendors past and present?

The multiple versions of BHS are different resources; if you hide BHS 3.5, this won't affect BHS 4.2.
We're working on making all resources (including E4, Galaxie, etc.) available to Logos 4 users who have purchased them. Our collection of these resources may be incomplete when we launch, but we'll add files to it as we discover them.

Dear Bradley:
I am now getting confused. [and please be assured, I have never called customer service for any help in finding or restoring "lost" resources]
1a. I must reload all of my deleted/hidden resources back into L3 in order that L4 can see them.
BUT I did not keep any listing of the hidden ones (many of which were of Spanish origin).
I did not keep a list because I did not care--I simply wanted them hidden/gone/forgotten-- and because it was such a "pain" to hide them one-at-a-time!
-- Therefore will there need to be a different process to re-add the hidden files as opposed to the ones which I actually removed?
1b. Then reload & re-index L4
1c Then I must hide/remove them all over again in L3
RESULT
2. L4, having now been 'tricked" will "never" try to re-load them again?
BUT
2 a. If I don't reload the hidden files into L3 does this mean that L4 will continually try to re-add them in a "purgatorial" endless loop?
2b (even if I try to take them out of L4's resource drawer)?
Hoping I have not confused the matter further.
Steve

Me too! [:)]
The "hide resource" feature that will be released in Logos 4 Beta 7 has absolutely nothing at all to do with LDLS3. It does not matter whether or not the resources are discovered in LDLS3.
The only constraint with the resource hiding feature in Logos 4 is that Logos 4 must have seen the resource at least once so that its title shows up in the UI, so that you can hide it.
If a resource isn't showing up in Logos 4, you're already done. If a resource is showing up in Logos 4 and you don't want it to, hide it. (Instructions on how to do this will be provided with Beta 7.)
If Logos 4 thinks you are missing a resource, and automatically downloads it for you, and it then shows up in "My Library", then hide it and you'll never see it again.
[Edit] Re: Your step 1a: If you want to import the resources into Logos 4, so that it can see them once, so that you can hide them, you can just scan an old LDLS3 DVD that you have. Put it in your DVD drive, type "scan E:\" (where E:\ is the letter of that drive) into the command bar, and restart Logos 4. It should scan the DVD and find any resources you are missing. When Beta 7 is available, you can hide the resources to prevent the system thinking they're missing and downloading them.

My newest DVD was a 3.0d and (argh!) it has discovered 73 resources which it is kindly indexing for me.
I assume they are either hidden/removed Spanish resources/targums/Cairo fragments etc or things like extra copies of Westminster "2" or "3" etc.
I hope that the fact this is an older 3.0d rather than a newer 3.0f does not subject me to further "troubles."

Bradley,
My main concern is with E4 resources for two reasons.
1. One resource (can't remember which one right now) caused problems on certain types of searches, so I sure don't want that added back in.
2. Many E4 resources were thankfully released by Logos and ober the years I was able to delete the duplicate E4 title's such as Pink, Spurgeon, Loyd-Jones, E4 strongs and others. If you add these back it, it will be a major pain sifting out duplicate resources all over again!
One major help would be if Logos could add a search category for publisher in the Library. Is there any plans to perhaps do this?

Yes, Beta 7 will show the list of hidden resources and allow you to remove items from it (to "unhide" them).
