Search resource pickers and Sync are ANNOYING

1. Basic and Bible pickers.

they repeat Collection names, probably as a result of Sync with my other machine
Basic cannot recognise some Short Names that Library recognises instantly eg. NBD
Basic gives me NTSK when I type TSK when neither books have a Short Name in Library (the situation is not improved when I give them a short name)
Other short names I created were eventually recognised (HBD & MSB below)

2. Synchronisation between machines

A. I usually use the laptop. After several days I want to use Desktop. I Sync Now on laptop then Sync Now on Desktop.

Desktop entries are as below:

Preferred bible (first entry) is duplicated in my Prioririze list (same bible on both machines).
File entries in File | Open are duplicated

On the positive side, new entries were created from the laptop.

Laptop entries are as below:

Preferred bible (first entry) is duplicated in my Prioririze list.
Restored a file entry I had just deleted in File | Open

On other occasions Collections were duplicated, mixing older and newer versions.

B. After having created Short Names on Desktop I Sync Now on Desktop then Sync Now on laptop.

Desktop entries are as below:

NO changes

Laptop entries are as below:

named (older) Desktop layouts nuked the named (newer) laptop layouts
Short Names found in Library
NO other changes

Sync is designed to be an "always on" feature. Turning it off for long periods of time allows conflicting changes to accrue on your machines and is not a recommended configuration.

I'm disappointed with that "politically correct" answer, Bradley (partly because I anticipated it!).

However, BUG: you don't get away with nuking all the named layouts on one machine.

I agree: older data musn't overwrite newer data. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to try to reproduce the problem here from the description you've given. If no duplicates were created, that means no conflicts were detected by the server, which means it thought that your desktop layouts were indeed newer. Possibly we might be able to tell if this is a bug from the log files, but I'm not sure. I can ask our sync expert to take a look over this thread and see if he understands what might be going on.

I can differentiate the machine layouts because I name them Desk xxx/desktop xxx or lap xxx/laptop xxx. It follows that the laptop layouts are newer because I could not create any desktop layouts for a few days, but I lost at least 2 recent named laptop layouts.

Hi Dave,

Did you by chance delete (click the X in the upper right of
the layout thumbnail) any of the laptopXXX layouts on the
desktop? If so this delete will be synced to the laptop, which would explain
the missing layouts.

It is possible! To my mind laptop and desktop layouts don't mix so i might have done that unthinkingly. I'll run another test with Beta 5 and see what transpires.

To address the Basic and Bible 'Search In':

Is it possible that the "All But Bibles" collection includes/excludes even one different resource between your two systems? I would think that could account for the duplication, especially since the other collection names in screenshot aren't duplicated. Scott would know more about the sync issue, though.
I'll submit this for review. This is true for built-in short names, such as TSK and NTSK as well, unless the resource is open. It would be helpful to be able to use those in Search In field.
When I type TSK, both TSK and NTSK appear in matches, which makes sense since both include the letters 'tsk'. If you're not seeing the NTSK in the matches, though, that's a problem.
They appear in the list if they're open (resources in section between 'All Open Resources' and Collections/Series in screenshot). It does make sense to be able to type the short name as in Library and Command box.

Here's what I did (Beta 5):

A. On laptop.

Delete Layouts desk b5-1, desk b5-3 (1 thru 4 were available)
Create Layouts lap b5-1, lap b5-2 & deleted all lap b4-x layouts
Deleted duplicate 1x All but Bibles from Collections - same contents. No other duplicates!
Observed duplicate Collection in Basic Search resource picker (below)
Observed Sync'ing

B. On Desktop:

Started L4 and observed Sync'ing

I deleted the duplicate All but Bibles from desktop Collections, initiated a Sync Now and observed that the the dupes had been removed from Resource picker!

But nothing has changed on the laptop after several Sync cycles, except that All but Bibles (6) is now All but Bibles (2)!

I had both laptop and desktop online and Sync'ing. I basically made changes in one and waited until it was observed in the other.

deleted All but Bibles from Collections and observed it disappear from resource picker and then the other machine
observed duplicates for All Collection in picker and saw it propagate to Collections (desktop)
deleted All Collection and re-created All but Bibles in Collections
desktop then duplicated Bible Dictionary in picker. Switched off desktop. Laptop was OK.
Switched on desktop and it has duplicates for Bible Dictionary + Bibles in picker and Bible Dictionary in Collections!
deleted duplicates in Collections and now desktop seems OK.
laptop now has duplicate for Bibles in picker!

I'm not going through another cycle of delete and hope, so I would suggest:-

never allow a system generated duplicate to appear in the picker!
never allow a system generated duplicate to propagate to Collections from the picker

My experience suggests these are true duplicates (same content) and even if they are not never allow a duplicate to appear in the picker! It is impossible for me to know the difference between Bibles and Bibles (3) in the picker. The duplicates in Collections have NOT arisen as a result of my changing their content in any machine.

Just done another Sync (Beta 6) with my desktop because I had:-

changed format of 1 Guide
added a new guide
added a Clipping with tags
tagged 3 resources
deleted some Layouts

It took a fair while, at least 5 minutes, before I could get into Library without a warning. but all the tags were there and everything else was correct

EXCEPT

both machines now have a duplicate All But Bibles in the resource picker!

LATER ...

It bubbled up to Collections (desktop) where I was able to delete it and then it was removed from the picker.

Laptop fixed itself.

Got this after installing B9 on Desktop:

There was a similar hotch-potch of dupes on the laptop (B8).

It was resolved by deleting the dupes from Collections, but I don't want this to be a permanent workaround!

its happened again on SR-2 (and the RC's) this time with duplicates of All But Bibles (11) & (2) in Collections and Resource Picker.
