Searching -- i'm a new user

I don't have hours and hours to invest in figuring out simple things that should work, so unless somebody can explain things to me quickly and easily, I will be returning this software.

I am sure I installed it correctly. I did not interrupt its indexing. But then yesterday when I opened logos, first of all, it informed me that it was indexing. Does it do this every time? I thought this was a one time deal.

I have kept the software open this entire time because I am afraid to close it. Yesterday I did a search and got 0 hits. Today I did a search and got 0 hits -- Joan of Arc.

I am not going to waste my time with this unless someone can provide a simple explanation.

The reason I bought the software was to do basically concordance work, searching for the all the occurences in OT of various Hebrew lemmas. I have NO idea how to figure that out -- when the software can't even find Joan of Ark!

Amy, sorry to hear you are having issues.

Yes, indexing should be a one-time deal until you buy new resources or the resource files are updated. It is possible that something went wrong with the initial indexing process, this might cause Logos to start indexing when it starts up.

First, go to your search window, make certain it is set to basic and input a term that is sure to be in your library like "the" or "God." does it get any hits?

If this works then this page might help you figure searching out better
    http://wiki.logos.com/Search_HELP

If not, then there's a good chance that something is wrong with your index. You will need to grab your logs and upload them to the forum and then someone can figure out what went wrong with the indexing process. Instructions are here: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/6731.aspx

    Hi Amy,

Sounds like an indexing issue. There have been some problems since the release of the NIV2011 which may be affecting your indexing depending upon exactly when you downloaded. See here:

    http://community.logos.com/forums/t/28720.aspx

There are workarounds on that thread for the time being. If our still struggling by tomorrow morning it may be worth contacting customer services. Once things are indexed fully the software works well. As above your logs will help work out what's going on.

    Hi Amy

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with the software. I can however assure you that any time invested in mastering the interface will be well rewarded in time saved down the line.

However like the posts above it sounds like an indexing problem and the new version of the NIV is causing quite a lot of people bother. We hope that there will be a fix for that soon.

I did a search on my Scholar's library and was quite surprised to find only one resource made mention of 'Joan of Arc'. Is the 'The Bible and its Story Vol 4' in your library? If not do you know in which resource you expected to find a reference?

Perhaps it is rightly reporting 0 hits!

There seems to be some variation in how you are spelling your search term.  It is "Joan of Arc" rather than "Joan of Ark."  Are you using the basic search and searching your entire library?  I got 54 hits in 50 articles in 23 resources when I ran the search.  The number of hits you get will depend on what you have in your library.  There are a number of possibilities for receiving no hits on any particular search.  You need to be sure you are using the proper search for what you are attempting to accomplish.  You also need to choose the proper resources to search -- don't expect to find a Greek word in a Hebrew lexicon (well, maybe, but unlikely).  Of course, you also need to enter your search term properly.  Spelling matters since computers are very stupid machines and generally find only what you tell them to find (unless they are programmed otherwise).  Also, you need to pay attention to the manner in which you enter a search string with multiple members.  If you search for Joan of Arc as opposed to "Joan of Arc" you may get hits for each individual word.  It takes a little time to learn what works so don't be too hasty to give up since the rewards can be very worthwhile.

Perhaps you'd get more hits if you spelled it correctly? [;)] With correct spelling (and quotes around), I found 79 hits in 43 resources. Admittedly I have a bigger library, but several of them were in books that almost everyone will have, like Who's who... or 131 Christians... or various dictionaries. For "Jeanne d'Arc" I got 16 in 8.

Okay, hopefully this is what I am supposed to do.

For the record, this is not a problem with my spelling joan of arc wrong. first because when I open a specific resource such as the oxford dictionary of the christian church, it has no problem finding it. and also because I have the same problem with such basic words as angel, repent, comfort. etc.

this morning restarted the computer the indexer started itself automatically. it took two hours then went away. opened logos 4, the indexing icon appeared again and said it had 9 hours to go.

thanks for any help you can provide.

The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is also on my library and when I open that document and search I was able to get a hit. The problem is with searching from the home page and applies to other things such as 'repent' and 'comfort'. Thanks for the idea though.

One of the advantages Logos advertizes is that you DON'T have to capitalize and can use variant spellings. I have also searched for other things such as  'repent' and 'comfort' with the same result. ps adding a smiley face after a snotty comment does not in fact soften the blow. [:D]

Amy I think you would be better speaking directly to tech support. The way that you are writing seems a little aggressive. Please bear in mind that no one here has to help but do through their own goodwill. If you want to talk about refunds etc. please do this directly with Logos. [:)]

    Amy,

You did load your logs correctly. It looks like the indexer is
running (or was when you uploaded your logs). There's no indication of
anything wrong in the logs so far. If you could wait until indexing
finishes then upload your logs, we could determine if the indexer was
having problems. Leave your computer on and plugged into a power
source while the indexer is running.  When the little blue Logos icon disappears from the menu bar,
close Logos 4 if it's open then repost your logs.

    Thanks,

    Tom

It would help if you were to quote a bit of the post to which you are responding.  I don't think you were speaking of my post since I didn't insert a smiley, but I don't think the comment was meant to be "snotty."  Let's face it, we all make mistakes from time to time.  I've personally found some real "howlers" in some of the searches I've attempted with no success.  You are right regarding capitalization -- it isn't necessary.  What he and I were referring to was the inconsistent spelling in your original post -- both "Arc" and "Ark."  You'll find that the members of this forum are generally pretty helpful to one another and not in the habit of taking pot shots -- at least until they know you better.  [;)]  Peace !

BTW:  Something was apparently downloaded last night since my L4 stated there were resources to be added (probably updated versions) and is also indexing.

Let me get this straight: I write a comment to Mike Binks -- and you accuse me of being 'snotty' towards you, and deal you blows? I haven't said anything to you before now, so how could that possibly be? I have to agree with Daniel, you do come out as aggressive. Well, don't worry, I'll stay out of this thread from now on; I've obviously overstayed my welcome.

@ tom okay I will upload my stuff again. fyi my husband says the indexer appears to be crashing halfway through its process. I have no idea how he knows this but i thought i'd pass it along.

Okay. I hope I did it right. I actually forgot to close logos when I compressed the file, so I trashed that and then closed logos and then compressed the files again, etc. I dont see what difference that would make, but since you said to close logos, I did. I am confident though that the archiving was not happening when I did all this. thanks a lot.

    Amy,

Thanks. You're having the same NIV 2011 problem lots of other people are having. See this post for how to hide the NIV 2011 to work around the issue for now.

Take a look at the second link in my signature (Logos Log Scribe) for the description of a utility that will automate much of the process of archiving Logos log files (Assuming you are using L4 Mac)
