iOS 5 Dumps Downloaded Books

Like many I jumped on the iOS 5 as soon as it was released. I am updating my iPhone now, but on my iPad the update erased all of my downloaded books despite the fact that iTunes says that the apps are being restored. The Logos app is here and working by I lost my downloaded books.
Anyone else seeing this?

Yes....I also lost the entire library unless I am not allowing enough time to load.

Perhaps we did not allow enough time? I now see the library and what I was reading. I'mnot sure yet about the downloaded books.

I lost my downloaded books too.I spent two hours re-downloaded my books, same thing happened the last time around.
It is still beyond my why Logos does not save our downloaded books list as part of our profile and even allow us to mark books from download fromthe Desktop app.

Worse than that is that Apple doesn't allow you to back up the downloaded books.
I don't blame Logos. This is Apple's doing.

I blame Logos,
I also have an app from a competitor that is named after an oil producing tree. I did not have to re-download books or even sign up, I just opened the app and everything was there. I would not mind if Logos' app had to re-download the books, I just don't want to spend two hours doing it manually everything I re-install the app or upgrade the OS. It is not fun at all when you have thousands of books. This is why I did not even bother doing it with my android app.

All I see when I open the Logos app is, on the home screen, Find nearby presentations, and Vyrso is here. Nothing else. Library..nothing. I did get a message first thing that said it couldn't download the book, but I'd not asked for any specific book. How the heck do I get my Logos back on my phone. never mind downloaded books. I have no library period. Been sitting here a LONG time and still nothing. I don't even know where to go to begin downloading anything. This is ridiculous. I'm planning to buy the new 4S later this week. Guess I'd best forget having Logos on this phone til I can go get the new one Friday, and then forget it too?
I deleted the app and re-downloaded it. Now it won't let me log on. Says invalid username and password. username is email and I've got that right and I know I've got the password right too, but it won't take it. However, NOW, I have a free books. But none of my library. This is frustrating.

I also get no library, nothing but a revolving circle. please help!

Same as others, no library..... Hope someone has a fix soon....

I can't see my library on my iPad but I haven't upgraded it to IOS5 so - at least - part of the problem may be done to a server issue at Logos.

Same for me: no Library at all, but titles still show under recent. I am on an iPad1 and still iOS 4.x, so this is about Logos 1.8.1 and NOT about iOS 5!

I had this problem before upgrading to Logos 1.8.1 so think it's a wider issue and must - as far as I can see - be related to an issue with the Logos servers that support the iPad environment or connectivity to them.

Graham, Yes - not iOS 5 or Logos 1.8.1 then! After seeing all the other forum threads about login issues, I turned off networking on my iPad. In Offline Mode, my Library is back, and I can see and use all 500 or so titles I have offline. I'm writing these notes in the hope they might be useful to others, until the server issues are resolved. I guess I will go without Logos or iOS 5 upgrade until this gets fixed soon. Until then, I can keep what still works.

Same problem...Upgrade my iPhone to iOS5 and now my Logos library is empty! Tried restarting the phone and that didn't work. I then deleted Logos and reinstalled it and now it says "Sign in Failed. Invalid username or password" yet I know they're correct.
Anyone figure out a fix yet?

Weird...now I can't log onto Logos with my Mac either! What's up with that?

So with Logos servers back up and working can anyone who has done the IOS5 upgrade comment on whether Logos downloaded books were actually lost?
Thanks, Graham

Graham - Indeed, there seems to be a problem with how Logos stores resources on the mobile app. This is completely unrelated to the downed servers last night. I updated my iPad yesterday and lost my downloaded resources.

Graham--I had started this forum for the very reason of addressing the downloaded books issue. The problem with the library and servers is a whole other issue, but, as is often the case, forums can go astray from the original subject.
As alabama24 mentioned, it seems the problem in Logos is with how the resources are stored on the device. I have a pdf reader with several Greek language files and other miscellaneous stuff stored in it. With the iOS 5 update it was all still there. I don't know what the fix will be, but it obviously seems that this is not an isolated incident. I am just thankful I had not downloaded multitudes of books as others. I remember one person talking about how they spent hours downloading the entire available library. I do hope they see this before updating!

I finally gave up last night after couldn't use the pc version either. It didn't accept my password. Appears that it was indeed a server issue ans this morning, all programs load and libraries show. Don't see indicator that books are downloaded, so will probably have to do that, but I can do that as needed.

Hi everybody,
I unfortunately upgraded to IOS5 before reading these posts...
All my downloaded books (approximately 1600) are lost...
Hours of downloading for nothing...
I'm a bit sad as you can imagine...
Would it not be great to have an option to download more then one book at the time?
For example, make a selection of books and choose "download selection"...?Hope this option will be coming available soon.
I think it would benefit a lot of people.Anyone agree?

For my sake, no. For your sake? YES! [:)] I don't have a reason to download all my books. I have a few downloaded, but I have a good internet connection wherever I am.

I don't entirely hold Logos unresponsible. They should know what you have downloaded somehow.
But I find Apple far more irresponsible. There is no excuse for not being able to backup every last byte on the device, be it iPad or iPhone.
I repeat, no excuse!
Would you tolerate a backup system/process of your desktop or laptop if that system/process left out anything? I don't think so. If you do, you should not.

Hmmm. I believe that I will pass on iOS5 until there is a solution to this. I have over 2,000 books on my iPad and do not have time to redownload everything.
What about Preseus and the Civil War Collection? How do you get that back? Is it even available for download?
Logos does need to find a solution that will automaticily download books so that one does not have to download 2,000 books individually. This is rediculous! I have already had to do it more than once in the past.

Can "not" statements be applied in library searches? For example, I would like to scroll the iPad library without the Perseus books, which are so numerous that scrolling the library takes hours just to get through the alphbetical "A" listing. If the answer is yes, is there a guide for the library search function somewhere that might show other search syntax options, such as search criteria concantentation? That would alleviate some of the frustration with having to redownload everything. If not, take this a plea for more robust library search functions Logos.

I agree with the sentiments expressed in this topic. Very disappointing. This is the third occasion when I have lost all my Logos downloaded books. This also happened this time with my material from one of the other major Bible programs but they provide the facility to download in one go all the books held on computer by wi-fi which is very straightforward.

Apple gives us several options for storing data in iOS applications: documents, application data, caches and temporary. Documents and application data are synced and backed up through iTunes and now iCould. Cache and temporary storage is not backed up. We follow Apple's recommendation of storing data that can be downloaded again in cache storage. In earlier iOS versions, all data was backed up, but Apple changed this because it made the backup process too slow and took too much space in iTunes.
iOS 5 is the first version I'm aware of that required a full reinstall. All previous versions have been upgradable, leaving all app data in place. Developers were not given notice that iOS 5 would be different. Had we known, we could have accelerated our plans to make bulk downloading and/or redownloading easier.

Thanks Dave for the response. My apologies for the accusative tone the discussion took. I was just wondering why it happened and if it had a fix. Go figure that Apple changed things at the last moment. They did that with Lion and Microsoft did that with win 7. Too bad for the developers I guess. Thanks again for your work and I look forward to having a better download feature in the future. Love the app!

Thanks Dave. It's awesome to understand things, but I've got one more question. Are they really thinking about adding a bulk download option? That would be awesome in my opinion.

I'm glad you did this, though understand the frustration of users with several hundred books to download. But It really would make sense if we could just tag books to be downloaded with a mobile-download tag - and if we downloaded those books manually, the app could add the tag for us. That way if this sort of thing happens again, we don't have to select the books for download again, they can re-download automatically. It would also mean that within our desktop app we could choose which books would download.
My iCloud backup clogged up completely because other apps aren't following these guidelines. One of my apps uploaded 2.9Gb to iCloud, and OliveTree's BibleReader uploaded nearly 800Mb. I've had to turn backup off for these and other apps.

Yes.
I would like to see a lot of the the management and destination-routing functions available from a users Amazon account for Kindle(s) available to Logos users, both from our user accounts on Logos.com and from our desktops.

Here is a blog post by the creator of Instapaper that expands greatly upon what Dave said above: http://www.marco.org/2011/10/13/ios5-caches-cleaning. What happened to Logos is obviously a problem that several developers are having to address. Come on Apple, fix this!

True, and shame on Apple for making changes without thinking through the consequences. That said, Logos could have partially mitigated the problem by at least storing the list of which files we wanted downloading in our documents folder. That way we'd still have to redownload the files, but at least we wouldn't have to select them all manually again.

Mark, I agree. And hopefully we will see this improved with Logos and other developers as well as they learn Apple's idiosyncrecies.

Wow Apple and Logos! How about better tools and full backup options please. I am support being able to download offline books based on a tag, or better, a collection that we can define. I really do not want ALL titles offline based on how poorly the app seemed to handle the startup processing last time I had some 2000 titles. Well we are about backups and loss of data, please add a real backup/export and restore/import for user-data. The Apple and Logos clouds are not a backup - just a sync method.

To Bob and Dave:
This re-download process is extremely time consuming and totally avoidable. I sincerely hope that this is the very last we have to do this again. Please fix the download process as a high priority.
Please understand that many (most) of us either cannot afford or do not want to have a 3G plan to go with the iPad / iPod Touch, so offline usability is extremely important to us. Please add more features (such as real search, passage guide, text comparison, etc) to the offline mode of the mobile apps.
Thanks!
Peter

Maybe Logos could keep a list of the downloaded books on our account page. After I upgraded to iOS5, and I opened Read It Later, it prompted me that I would need to redownload all the articles that I had on the Itouch as they were not backed up. Since the articles are available on the server it was just a matter of selecting to download the list and wait for the articles to come back.

I had major problems downloading IOS5. I did it here in Germany, where I am for the next couple of weeks, as I had far better internet than in Albania. But it got interrupted, refused to sync properly, but didn't tell me so. Then I synced back from my last sync, 29th September. And that got interrupted, so was incomplete. I had to attempt to install IOS5 several times. Then couldn't open either Logos or Vyrso, till I found a workaround. Then, of course I'd lost all my books. I downloaded a basic few, as I am without wifi for the next 2 weeks. Have gone OFF IOS5! But have Logos and Vyrso usable, tho less so than before. I think it would be an excellent idea to have the option of redownloading previously downloaded books.

Yes, I had this same problem. All of my downloaded books and Bibles were not restored after I installed ios5. I opened the Logos app twice to see if it was just a glitch; it was not. So, I downloaded all of them again. I was surprised, to say the least, that this was necessary. So far, they are still there!

Gerry, since this has been a known fact for several days now, you do don't have to look very far for whose fault this one is! Sometimes our own errors hurt more then those of others! Sorry that you got caught, not reading the forum.

A Solution
1) Tag all downloaded books and backup/sync tagged book list to Logos User Account. Allow this to be carried out on both the iOS device and Desktop app for convenience. (I.e. bulk tagging etc. not so easy on an iOS device as compared to the Desktop app)
2) Store books in Cache, Apple says so... (I.e. no choice but to comply here)
3) Build into Logos for iOS an Auto sync option much like already exists on Windows and OS X and already partially exists in iOS to resynce books if the cache is cleared and or if downloaded books have been updated.
4) If option 3) is not possible then simply build the same into the Logos iOS app so the app itself performs this operation either (user selectable) auto-magically on startup or manually via an alert on the opening page as is already carried out for updates available for downloaded books.
This then means in either case 3) or 4) above a user can set and forget while the Logos iOS app applies updates and or resyncs books. It might be nice to add a user alert notification via email or the new status messaging features in iOS to notify the user when the update / resync has completed.
Given the constraints imposed by Apple is there any other workable solution?
NOTE:-
Option 3) if possible, would be a more transparent user experience and could even be implemented to operate like the Desktop app at designated times during the day and or when the device is connected to power etc. etc. to minimise user impact.
Option 4) could
function in much the same way as Logos for iOS now functions with alerts
for book updates.0 -
And as for my feelings on the matter...
I like many others have been "caught" again and now need to start from scratch AGAIN! This is a major waste of time.
I feel implementing the suggestion in my last post will help us all feel a lot better!

Yes I agree!
I would say whatever the Kindle app on iOS does to preserve all their downloaded books, the Logos app should do the same.

I think it would help if Logos would add a "Download all books" or "download * book" function in the MORE section.
With my 2000* books library this "effect" is a real pain....
0 -
The real annoyance here is (1) the inability to batch download, and (2) the multi-step process that is required to download even one book. There has got to be an easier way to do that. Logos should get on that ASAP.

GREAT. The (re)downloading function with widcards is overdue anyway (my perspective) esp if you own a large library......
