Logos Android on Kindle Fire?

I am a power user of Logos 4 in my study (desktop w/ two screens -- laptop for the classroom). When I'm on the road I have been using a Kindle for a lot of general reading. I try to travel light -- especially overseas, and have looked at moving up to a tablet for basic reading and some look-up tasks on the road.

Does anybody know if the cut-down Android system on the Kindle Fire will support the Logos Android beta?

Thanks

Hi John. I don't think there's a definitive word on this yet.

This is true, but the current version of Logos for the Android requires an SD card, which the Fire does not have.

I noticed Vyrso is available on the Amazon App Store and recall hearing that the Logos Bible app has been submitted but I believe both use external storage (SD).  With less than three weeks left until the Kindle Fire ships is there any chance of getting word as to if these apps will work with the Fire?  I am a pastor and have two on preorder for myself and my son...

Most likely the bigger question is whether Amazon will approve the app since it is a reading app and therefore somewhat in competition with their own Kindle app.  I'm a bit surprised they approved Vyrso and not Logos (at least not yet) since Vyrso is more broadly a reading app vs. Logos which is more for study.

So, will Logos run on a Galaxy Tab 10.1?  It doesn't have an SD card either...

I think that the Fire has a good chance of running Logos since it does have a 8GB internal drive.  If tabs like the 10.1 Galaxy Tab can run it (no SD card), it should work.

Kindle Fire is being DELIVERED today.  I expect mine at my door at 6:00 PM tonight.

Amazon just placed a new Android Logos App for the Kindle Fire in their App Store on Oct 19, 2011 here:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logos-Bible-Software/dp/B0062RM1VQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1321376265&sr=1-1

We should know by tomorrow if it will work properly.  As soon as the Fire is received it must first be charged for four hours and then upgraded to Firmware Version 6.1.

The Fire has 8 Gb of on board memory.  However, I surely will not want all my Logos books cluttering it up.  Is there some way to just load the NIV, The Bible Knowledge Commentary and Easton's Bible Dictionary and ignore all the other resources?  How much memory on the Fire would that take including the basic app?  Also, will it index itself upon installation so I could rapidly locate different passages in the Bible?  I have 8 Note files for Logos and would like to sync them down to the Fire as well.

On my PC Logos takes up 5.66 Gb in 900 files.  If I can reduce the size to half that for the Fire, it would work just fine.

If it takes up too much memory, I'll just use it on my PC and use the Amazon Kindle specific Direct Verse Jump KJV, NIV and NET (with 61,000 publisher notes).  They can do the minimum job but not as good as Logos, of course.

I received my Kindle Fire this morning and the first thing I tried (after the prompted os update) was to download the Logos Bible app.  I was surprised to see it was not listed among my apps (I have it on my phone) and when I searched the store from the device it did not show up.  I confirmed it is still on the app store when using my phone.

I did manage to sideload the beta from this forum.  You have to first go to the settings on the Kindle Fire under the device section and tell it to "Allow installation of applications from unknown sources".  I then downloaded the .apk file and installed.

So far it seems to work OK.  I downloaded the KJV and Believers Bible Commentary and did not have any problems.  I will work with it more and let you know how it turns out.

Also, I tried posting this comment from the "Silk" browser on the fire but it would not allow me to input text into the comment box for some reason...

    Chuck,

Have you tried the Vryso app?  Not sure of the spelling but I thought that that app was available for the Fire.  I am very interested to see if it will work.  Thanks for any update.

Thanks for letting me know about that.  Can you determine how many Gb the Logos App uses on your Fire?  Also, are there any delays when searching for specific verses?  It appears you were able to select exactly which Logos resources you would download.

Logos can be sideloaded on the Kindle Fire as I described above.

I have not tried to load Vryso app as it is not in the Amazon store and I wanted to use the Logos app first.

As for performance and memory usage:  The overall performance seems very good.  As you may guess, books that are downloaded to the device are much faster to access than those on the "cloud".  There is minimal delay when changing passages or even switching books in the passage guide, I would consider it very useable.

I have only downloaded a few books and did not calculate the space they took.  I have quite a few apps and books downloaded on the device and I have 5.9 gig of the useable 6.5 available so I don't think it will be a big issue.

My initial impressions of the Fire are good and the Logos app seems to be a nice fit.  I have not used any of the original language resources so I cannot comment on them.  Searching seems speedy and I have not had any crashes in the 30 or so minutes I have used the app.

Edit:  I just downloaded the "KJV Bible Commentary".  The free memory before the download was 5.92 gig and after it was 5.89 gig.

I also downloaded "The Complete Works of Francis A. Schaeffer" which is a larger volume.  Free memory now 5.88 gig...  Odd that it dropped so little on that one!

Thanks for that information.  You sold me on getting the Logos App.

The Logos App can be ordered here for zero cost:

    http://www.amazon.com/Logos-Bible-Software/dp/B0062RM1VQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1321390916&sr=1-1

My Kindle Fire did not appear in the order block but when clicking on it, I received this message:

    "What happens next?
After submitting your email address or phone number*, you will receive a message with a link to download the Amazon Appstore for Android."

I also noticed on the Mobile Readers' Forum the following:

"There is an SD built-in to the fire for apps that need it. It isn't removable though, according to the dev pages."

Thus, it appears set up to allow the Logos App to function just fine.

If the Amazon App Store is already inside the Kindle Fire, it should work from there as well. My Fire has not yet arrived but is due momentarliy.  The Logos App will be the first I try after charging and upgrading.

As I stated above, the app is on the store but will NOT show up on the Fire - I am not sure why.  You have to download it through the browser on the Fire from the forum thread about the latest beta after setting your Kindle Fire to allow it.

    Android Market, here:

Shows Version 0.9.1 dated October 1, 2011, available for download.  I presume, by allowing the fire to install non-Amazon apps, one could install this version as well using the Fire's Silk browser.  Is the beta version here at the same level?  What is the link to the beta version here?

Do you have any ideas when the Logos App will go Gold?  I presume that Android Market version is also beta.  Maybe Amazon is waiting for the app to go gold to allow it to be officially available at their App store.

Later: after I received my Kindle Fire I went to the Amazon Android App Store to the Logos App.  My own device's name was there in the purchase window with an "X" next to it indicating its not yet compatible with the Fire.  I'll just check that site and install it when the "X" is removed.

I also noticed that after loading songs to my Fire the PC shows there are 5 Gb available on my Fire but the Kindle Fire shows there are 6 Gb available.  Evidently, that extra 1 Gb is the SD internal card for Android Apps which is sealed into the Fire.  Thus, once Amazon decides the Logos App has gone Gold, then we should all be able to use it without problems.

you can't download any apps from the android market place onto the Kindle Fire, only from the Amazon app store... the Logos app is on the Amazon app store, but for some reason you can't download it on the kindle fire from the Amazon app store, you have to side load it...

I was able to get this to work but thought I would add a little more detail.

    1. On the Kindle fire I browsed to the forum on the beta and clicked on the link for the beta. It does not show a download complete like I get on IE so did not even know it had downloaded it so I did it from my computer and was about to copy it via USB and figured out I had downloaded it three times as I kept clicking the link.

Here is that link from the other post http://downloads.logos.com/Android/Logos/beta/Logos-23.apk

    2. I went into the settings, then Device, and as noted turned on allowing the 3rd party apps to install

    3. I downloaded the Easy Install App from the Amazon App Store and ran it. Once I ran it it found the downloaded file and Logos installed and seems to be working fine.  I have this on my IPad and the search actually seems to work better. I did note that at this time my Reading Plan does not appear.

Here is the link for the installer: http://www.amazon.com/INFOLIFE-LLC-Easy-Installer/dp/B004RDMXSI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1321459139&sr=1-1

Gene - THANKS SO much for your instructions.    This is NO easy task, but I WAS able to get it . . and just in time to get familiar with it all on a convention trip.

For everyone else's sake, I certainly hope this process becomes much easier, but for now, it's good to know there IS a way to get Logos installed on Kindle Fire!

    Thanks again.

Logos was also an immediate install for me, and I side loaded as described above.

If you browse to the app on Amazon's website, it shows an X next to it indicating it's not compatible with the Fire. This is why it's not available directly from the App Store on the device.

It appears that the Fire soft buttons overlay the bottom row of Logos menu buttons, so I'm guessing this is why Amazon flagged it as incompatible. Hopefully, someone from Logos is testing it to make appropriate adjustments.

Personally...I'd love to see a nice Logos app optimized for the Fire!

How are search speeds for the Logos Android App on the Kindle Fire?  On my PC Logos gets to verses almost instantaneously since it has indexed itself there.

I've noticed on the Kindle Fire other Bibles specific to the Kindle used to index and have instantaneous access to verses on the 3rd Generation Kindle Keyboard WiFi but on the Kindle Fire they have NOT indexed and searches take a very long time for specific verses.

If Logos does not index on the Kindle Fire, then searches for specific verses will also take a long time.

Since Logos will be using an Android App, it should work fine.  I'm temporily using the Tecarta NIV and KJV which is also Android and approved by Amazon and it works perfectly with instant searches.

Logos should be even better once it's Android App is approved by Amazon.

I don't feel it makes it unusable but it would be nice to have fixed.  The biggest problem is when you press and hold a word to do a "look up" you have to carefully tap the button that would perform a search as it is mostly covered.  Other than that it is not a problem for what I have used to this point.

How about the Logos speed of searches on the KIndle Fire for words and locations of verses?  Are they as fast as on a PC or is there a noticeable slow down.  It appears that the Kindle Fire inhibits indexing of eBooks.  Logos definitely requires indexing on the PC.

It may be that Amazon has the Logos Android App classified as not yet suitable for the Fire for that reason.  Once that problem is cleared, the Amazon Android Store will probably clear it for regular downloads by customers.

What if WiFi is not available?  Can Android apps do any searches then?

I have noticed a huge difference in different Bibles on the Kindle Fire.  The Osnova KJV and NET plus the Crossway ESV search in seconds on the 3rd generation Kindle but take many minutes on the Kindle Fire.  The Tecarta KJV and NIV take just a few seconds on the Kindle Fire.  The Osnova requires indexing for a few hours upon installation.  The Tecarta Android App has built their indices into the App.

The Logos Bibles as well require an extended time for indexing on my PC upon installation.  Then it searches in just seconds. For the Logos Android App to work at peak performance, it would have to have its indices built into the App.  If it requires local indexing or access to a WiFi, it will search very slow.

Thus, Logos may be impaired on the Kindle Fire since the latter appears to impair indexing.  That problem may have something to do with why the Logos Android App is available in the Amazon App Store but is flagged at the moment as incompatible with the Kindle Fire.  Perhaps, once the Logis indices get built into the App, then the flag will change to show compatibility.

My Church has locked WiFi access so only staff can access it.  The membersip does not have access to WiFi at my Church so the Bibles I use must be able to search fast without internet access.  The reason for locking WiFi at Church is to prevent the members from having access to shared files which are required for the staff to function properly.

My main use for the Kindle Fire would be for reading Logos resources, note taking and highlighting and basic Bible searches to locate a specific verse or passage.  Any serious, in depth  study would likely be done on my desktop.

Currently no. You need some form of Internet connection - Wi-Fi or mobile network. According to the FAQ, offline search of resources is planned - http://community.logos.com/forums/t/34373.aspx

This is, I believe, one of the issues Logos are trying to address. I don't see how they could build indices into the App because many people would be using different resources. This is a consequence of Logos making available as many of our resources as they can, not just a single (or few) Bibles.

    Sir Maru said:

The iPad app does have local searching when offline. It is functional but not very fast. With the intention to get feature parity between the two applications this is something we will have to wait for.

The "incompatible" flag may be more to do with availability of an SD card which the Logos app requires. I understand that the Fire makes one available internally.

It all depends on what you mean by "fast". It is ok for me on the iPad (and so I would expect it to provide something similar on Android) but others might find offline searching too slow.

So, regarding perfomance, feel, and look...anyone have any further thoughts?

An update about Logos beta release for Android and the Kindle Fire.
Yes, Logos works great on the Fire, but no, the Android App cant do much of what the desktop does. I am still quite happy with it. My main (only?) Reason to have Logos on my Fire (any portable phone or tablet device is to read resources when I am out. Now, perhaps in the future, that will change!
I downloaded (sideloaded) Logos beta release and then I downloaded about 50 - 60 books into Logos with nearly 6 GB left of space. I have downloaded many other apps (forgive me, but I just had to have youversion as well!) And additional databases. The Fire remains speedy and responsive. No, it is not an iPad2, but it is a very useful, handy device!
The worst thing thus far about the Fire is how the web browser (Silk, normally a very nice browser) interacted with Logos Forums. I, and at least one other Fire user, could not post to the Forums! Why? I don't know. But, I am making this post using my Fire ... though it was not easy. I suspect there will be a fix. Until then I use another browser for the Forums. But if that is as bad as it gets, I am thrilled with this device. Before the Fire I had a dual-booting (Android) NookColor. It was very nice, but there were too many pluses of the Fire to ignore.
In short, the Kindle Fire is a capable and useful Logos device. You can sideload it now or wait until the full revision is complete. I know that I like the Fire so wel l that I sold my NookColor. Speed is better than on the Nook and it is a lot more convenient. At least, that is my two-day appraisal!

thanks for the great reply. I am very excited now to try this out. I mainly want to use it to read resources as well.

  • JJ Miller
JJ Miller Member Posts: 103 ✭✭

Yes, I did. I followed the process outlined here. I got the Easy Installer program and downloaded the .apk file from the Forum site as described.  I have installed so many things today, I don't know that I could do it again without looking at the instructions...but yes, everything installed well.  Once complete, I simply launched the Logos app and started downloading books that I need (Bibles and some commentaries, and then some specific stuff on the Gospels that I am preparing messages for).

    All worked fine. :)

where do you download the app?  How do you sideload it?

Josh, here is what I did to download the Easy Installer App and sideload Logos Android (thanks to others who posted this earlier!):

    1)   The first thing I did was to change my settings to allow for sideloading. Simply go to my Fire Settings menu (top of screen) and then tap MORE, then choose chose DEVICE.  Under DEVICE you will see "Allow Installation of Applications from Unknown Sources"...tap this and make sure ON is in Orange.  Return Home.

    2)    Using the Fire Web App, I browsed to the forum and clicked on the link for the Android beta App. Here is the link:

http://downloads.logos.com/Android/Logos/beta/Logos-23.apk     When you do this, remember that these downloads will show up in your Kindle Notifications area (at top of the screen where it says, "JJ's Kindle" and a number). Just know that you won't see anything while it downloads (unless you go to notifications). Good news, I didn't know this when I started and it wasn't important... but as someone else has said, no need to download it 3 times thinking that nothing has happened.

    3)   Now I downloaded the  EASY INSTALLER app by going to Home > App > STORE and then typed a search for INSTALLER (or follow the link that someone provided below).   Download the free EASY INSTALLER app, and then go to your Notifications area to launch it (if needed).  The program should load and find the Logos beta .apk file that you downloaded in step 2. Select it and then tap on "Install Selected App."  .

Here is the link for the installer: http://www.amazon.com/INFOLIFE-LLC-Easy-Installer/dp/B004RDMXSI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1321459139&sr=1-1

    4)   Lastly, launch Logos for Android and then go to your library and search for some books that you know you would likely want access to all the time. A few Bibles, perhaps some Study Bibles or commentaries, or dictionaries, etc.  This way you know you have access to these books when you don't have wifi connection.

Thanks to those who identified these steps before.

JJ and others... thanks for the excellent links. They work and Logos is now on my Fire.

Does anyone have a link to do the same with Vyrso? I don't want to try and study on the Fire, just read so Vyrso would be the better choice for me.

The Fire is a great little device. My only gripes so far are: 1) Touchscreen is not as responsive as it should be and 2) Scrolling is not very smooth.

Here is the Vyrso beta download page.

The Easy Installer app is not necessary for installing.

We are working on fixing a couple items that prevent the Logos and Vyrso apps from working correctly on the Kindle Fire and will have an update out soon.

It is great to hear you are working on a fix to get Logos on the Fire through the Amazon Appstore.  I have friends that are interested but don't like the thought of sideloading.  Thank!

It's necessary if you want to use it today, isn't it?

In any event, looking forward to both apps optimized for the Fire.

No, in the device settings you can set the Kindle to allow installation of applications from unknown sources. Then just download the apk and open it.

I can confirm you do not need the installer if you adjust the settings to allow for installation from unknown sources.  I used the installer app the first time to install and it worked, but due to a complete reset I just downloaded it from the link and selecting it from the completed tasks in notifications for install allowed it to install itself. As a work around for posting in the forums if you click on "html" in the graphical menu above the text box you will be taken to a full screen box to type in straight HTML code, but you can just type text then update in the bottom left corner of screen (you'll possibly need to rotate to landscape to be able to see the update button with the keyboard minimized.
So far I really like the fire, I'm looking forward to the fixes for several oddities with the fire. Anyone worked out the logic on when the bottom menu bar overlaps the app menus? Still haven't nailed down all the times it works correctly or doesn't but it seems to be ok on the secondary screens as opposed to goobered on the home screen. (had to come edit this as some of the auto spell corrections were pretty odd)

Thank you all so much!  I'm almost emotional now that I can actually access Logos on my Fire.  Aw heck, I'm such a girl.
