Apparatuses

I would really like to be able to buy the apparatus for the BHS and NA27, but it only comes with the SESB and I really don't need any of the resources in that collection and can't justify paying a few hundred dollars for an apparatus. I really wish that I could purchase the apparatuses separately. Is this ever going to be a possibility?

I wish they'd fix the lemma search so I'd feel confident about buying the SESB. I think that if you wait around for it to be something that you can buy piecemeal that you might be waiting a long time. There doesn't seem to be that many people with as much of an interest in the original languages that would require them to want the apparatuses. And I'd figure that those SESB apparatuses are glued to the SESB resources, so prying them out may be a chore.

It doesn't hurt to ask though. It would be a nice thing to offer from Logos.

The answer is almost assuredly "No" since SESB is a product of the German and Dutch Bible Societies, not Logos.

The first part has already been answered. A critical apparatus is only of benefit to a person if they have an interest in biblical studies and have an IQ higher than 70. [;)]

They have already organised a cut-down version (referenced above).

And, again, the apparatus without the texts would be useless.

I'm guessing that if a deal could be done, they could offer the SESB BHS plus Apparatus for about $60.

Might I suggest that you ask the marketing people to modify the pages to indicate that some features do not work with v4.

If you are serious about studying the original languages, and if you want the apparatus' I am assuming you are, then SESB 3.0 is worth every penny. It contains all 5 volumes of BHQ currently published. These volumes go for between $80 and $120 each. A little over $300 for these and the apparatus' is a steal. I too would really like to have the BHS apparatus, and I find it pretty silly that you have to spend well over $100 to get it, in addition to the $99 Logos version BHS, when I can pay $50 for a paper copy that has the apparatus in it already.

I'm right with you. To me, this is the greatest obstacle to Logos functioning as a practical research tool for pastors/students with limited (realistic) budgets. I would love the electronic version of NA27, but the price differential (7.95 at B&N) is simply unjustifiable. I am completely willing to pay more for the functionality of an electronic copy but not 20+ times more.

The SESB package isn't just the apparatuses - it contains the text as well. So you don't have to buy both the SESB package and a separate BHS. Indeed, even if you already had a Hebrew Bible, you'd need the one that comes with SESB because it includes the apparatus indicators (the little brackets and letters) that align the notes of the apparatus to the text, just like in a print BHS.

Also, the SESB Version 3.0 for Logos Users contains a lot more than just a BHS and its apparatus - you also get an LXX with apparatus, a Vulgate with apparatus, 2 Greek New Testaments with apparatuses, and a number of BHQ fascicles - and the BHS, LXX, and GNTs are morphologically and lexically analyzed - significantly more information than you'll find in the print editions. Plus, you get some basic dictionaries covering the Hebrew Bible, the LXX and the Greek NT. And its searchable and, depending on your hardware, rather more portable.

If all you want is a BHS and you have no use whatsoever for an LXX, Vulgate, NT, etc. or even a Hebrew dictionary, then this might still seem steep, even with the digital benefits. But I hope I've at least cleared up the misconception that the SESB package only includes the apparatus. No other purchase is required.
