My (perhaps dumb) Question for the Day
I frequently see files posted here with a serial number prefix. Is this typically a number meaningful only to the author/distributor, or is there some common convention being followed?
Gracias

although publishers purchase blocks of ISBN's there is no guaranteed pattern

Are you perhaps referring to files that a user has zipped and posted? If so, somehow the system seems to determine the number associated with it.

I'd like to think there is a complex pattern that everyone is on on... but no it's assigned to the front of the file by the message board.

it's assigned to the front of the file by the message board.
Which makes sense, as there is a high probability of duplicate file names from the many contributors and some unique addition would be needed to store the files in the same location.
Thanks, all, for your answers.

Typically preappended values are date/time stamps... you might want to see if that is what you are seeing
