Indexing taking waaaaaaaaaaaay to long

System: MacPro 2 x 3.2ghz Quad Core Intel Xeon's; 12mb L2 cache; 14gb ram; nVidia 285GTX 1gb vram; 1tb 7200 rpm Main HD; 1.6ghz FSB; Snow Leopard 10.6.1

Internet Connection: Verizon Fios (Fiber Optics)

Logos: Upgraded to Platinum.

Logos has been indexing in excess of 11 hours.

It has been say this for the last 10 hours or so.

Am I looking at 51 minutes:44 seconds or 51 hours:44 minutes? I'm not sure.

Since, I'm now in the 12th hour of this I can only assume that the time is hours:minutes and the program is functioning correctly.

I'm now at 52:25. This is not going in a favorable direction.

You're right....it is taking way too long for you (your compute). I have a new Quad core with 8 GB RAM, 512 MB video; 5400 rpm main HD.....and downloaded and installed 8 Gigs of (1200...most from Scholars Gold) resources. I don't know how long it took because I went to bed....but it was less than 6 hours total time (downloaded.....installed....indexed).

Maybe there is an indexing issue that needs to be resolved from a tech support personnel.

L4 is known to run very slowly on a Mac through VMWAre (or similar).

A 12+ hour initial indexing time is not unusual, especially for large libraries, regardless of platform. There are reports from some users, particularly Mac users, running Logos4 through VMWare, of this taking more than 40 hours.

An Alpha for L4 for mac is also available for testing, though
it's not completely stable, and does not yet have all the same
functionality as the Windows version (though this is promised).

51:44 should depict hours and minutes, but this time estimate is not reliable. It really bogs down when indexing reverse interlinears, and throws off the estimate significantly.

Sorry, I should have said that this is the Logos a2 version.

It has nothing to do with a virtual machine. Logos 4 Win was no problem after I installed Parallels v5.

I just came in from church and it has been close to 19 hours indexing. Still estimates 39 minutes.

I am also running the Alpha 2, Alpha one indexed in less than 8 hours. Alpha two has been working for 36 hours now and says it has 23 hours left to go.

I am also on a Macbook Pro, and A2 has been indexing for the last two days (48 hours plus). The indexing time has been moving up and down all the time, and currently says 107 hours left. Yesterday it said around 70 hours most of the day. Not sure what is going on. The Macbook is only a couple years old with a 2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo, and 2 GB RAM. Not top of the line anymore, but I didn't think it was 107 hours worth of outdated. I know the final version of L4 will be much better in this regard though, so I guess I will just have to exercise my least favorite of all virtues--patience

I think the problem is that indexing does not progress overnight when the Mac is at rest. I noticed on several nights, that no progress was made at all. In my final day of indexing, I let it run all day while I was working. It was a pain because everything ran slowly, but indexing was able to finish. The good news, was that an estimated 24 hours took only 16 once I let it run during the day.

I am hoping future updates will fix this problem, but for now give that a try.

Apple's website has an application called Caffeine which will prevent the Mac from sleeping or going into screen saver mode. This will help the indexer complete without having to be working on the system at the same time.

However, I used System Preferences to turn off the Screen Saver and Energy Saver to keep the HD running.

I agree. It would have helped if the user had been warned that putting a computer to sleep paused the indexing process and that logging out restarted the indexing from scratch. Both my computers were indexing for almost 3 days because of a lack of information regarding the indexing process. If the Mac programmers for Logos are going to make every Logos user with a Mac an alpha tester, they could at least provide adequate documentation.

Mark, it is an ALPHA. That means there is minimal support and limited documentation. It takes patience to test in these early stages of development. It seems you are in over your head so I would suggest waiting it out until a there is a release with full support and documentation.

I, along with many others, didn't ASK to be an alpha tester. I paid my money to upgrade to Logos 4 and an alpha version was all I received. If Logos didn't want me and many others to be alpha testers, they shouldn't have sold me an alpha version of their software.

I am basically in the same boat but not as dramatically. I have turned off sleep mode - shut down my screen saver and have no other programs running - in the last 5 hours I have gone from 23 hrs remaining to 56 hours! All of this after indexing since Friday morning!!!! I will try Caffeine (thanks for the tips guys) and see if that helps.

I know it is an Alpha, I am not complaining, I just can't help test something that won't finish loading. I also cannot continue to devote 100% of my CPU to a project that has no end in sight. My greatest worry is that it will finally finish indexing and I will get a new update to the Alpha that will start the process all over again!

Don't worry. When Alpha 1 updated to Alpha 2 the index stayed intact. I don't see this being a problem. The index is its own (very large) file on the Hard Disk

I've been indexing on an almost new MacBook pro with 4gb of ram for about 5 days, and it still says 22:41 left for indexing..This is super odd.

If I posted the logs would that you help you help me to understand what is going on?

Posting the indexer log probably wouldn't hurt. Also, do you have the most recent Alpha release (Alpha 2)? If you do not, get it and this may solve the problem. If you do not have A2 you may need to restart indexing, but it ought to finally finish with the latest Alpha release

My computer creates logs by default. The Logs are kept in /Macintosh HD/Users/YourUsername/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Logging. In this case you want to post the "indexer.log" file using the button that looks like a movie clip on the toolbar of the post editor. One of the Mac engineers might be able to look at your log file and give you some specific advice in the morning. Judging by what I have read in other posts, it sounds like the indexer is hung up on a particular resource.

Most interesting.

After allowing the indexer to run under Caffeine it seemed to have finished. Key word is seemed.

I started Logos A2 and the indexer started again. Were back to 58:44.

I accessed the indexer.log. It's a zero bite file. Meaning the indexer is not writing to the file.

I can't help with diagnosis because I don't know how the indexer is supposed to work. Does it write on error only? Does it write on task completion only? When does it write to the file?

The last 8 years of my corporate life I tested software. Not knowing how a particular item is supposed to function yields nothing but speculation on whats happening.

I'm sure all of us want to make Logos4 a success. But, we could use some guidance from Logos programmers/testers.
