Sync with iPad

I bought Logos because I thought it promised that I could sync between my laptop and iPad. I thought this meant that I can pick up on my iPad where I left off reading on my laptop. This never happens. Tried fixing through support several times but no fix. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a trick I don't know? Or am I expecting too much?

rsbarber, in short it did work, and we wait for the update that will fix this.  As of right now the functionality is there but the syncing doesn't work.

Any hint as to how long we must wait? My last encounter with support, months ago, ended with the same words, yet syncing with iPad is promoted as a major selling point of this software. Do you think fixing this is a priority?

I'm with you on this.  The top priority at the moment is updating the way Logos4 syncs information including notes and highlights etc.  It's a rather large restructure that is taking longer than most feature additions.  I don't really know of a time frame on the iPad syncing but it shouldn't be far behind the merging of notes and implementation of highlights on mobile devices

  • Is there a trick I don't know?

Until Sync v2 framework is deployed in stable Logos 4.5 release and iOS 2.0+ updates, trick is updating Reading Plan on one device (to avoid sync bug confusion).

On 5 Jan 2012, Bob Pritchett replied => http://community.logos.com/forums/p/5923/321264.aspx#321264 with more details about sync bug plus:

Sometime very soon we'll ship a desktop v4.5 Release Candidate. Within a week of that release we'll make it final, and it'll roll out to everyone. Within a day or so of that we should be able to release the new iOS app with notes and highlighting syncing

In parallel, developers are working to get Reading Plans to Sync v2 as well. This may still be a few weeks out; I very much wish it wasn't, and we're all acutely aware that many people start reading plans on January 1, and we're disappointed that we were unable to deliver this before then. ...

Recent Logos 4.5 Beta releases have been focused on fixing bugs (getting ready for stable release candidate) along with a noticeable performance improvement in Logos 4.5 Beta 14 using Notes.  Looking at wiki => Logos 4 Beta Release Notes noticed Logos 4.5 Beta releases are typically a week apart.  Hoping for Logos 4.5 release candidate later this month, which would be very soon.

Caveat: understanding potential for data disaster/manglement possibilities with sync replication, personally willing to wait until all Sync v2 framework components are ready for reliable daily use by Logos user community that consistently and quickly works.

By the way, personally posted a Logos 4.5 Beta 14 sync issue for Logos development to investigate.

I think this technique is hit-or-miss. With me, it is miss.

Yes there is a hint ... in riddle form? What's jolly, red white and flesh colored and shakes like a bowl full of jelly? You will hopefully see the update before this fellow shows up again.

Sorry, feeling a little snarky today after the Packers lost Sunday.

More constructively we were told it would be before the end of the year last year. Then we were told hopefully before the end of the year. Then we were told at the beginning of the new year. Now we are told coming soon. So there apparently has been a huge road block that I think likely comes with the complexity of having Mac OS X, Windows, Android, iOS and Internet based HTML5 all working in a production quality level at the same time. That must be a huge problem since the very large team of Logos devs haven't been able to get it out the door even in a beta format that works.

After new updates syncing was working well. Then another update, and you guessed it... no more sync w/ iPad. Disappointment has returned.

    Hi

Can you be a bit more specific? No updates have yet shipped to the stable release on the iPad to fix the problem with sync of Reading Plans

So keen to understand what worked well and is now not working again.

PS: It could be that things started working intermittently for you - just by chance - which a number of people have seen

I thought I received several desktop updtaes and at least one iPad update in January and February. I just thought the success I wa seeing syncing my desktop w/ iPad was because of these. You may be right, I was just lucky. Though, it's a shame we still have to rely on luck more than a year after promised fixes.

Is this the "sync" issue you are trying to fix?

Let me explain my experience with the app. If you read Genesis 1 in the ESV on your computer, the ESV should open up to Genesis 1 on your iPad unless you closed the app using the ESV on your iPad, in which case the app will open to the passage you left off. The app does not have the feature of Kindle where the app asks you if you want to advance to the last read passage. Otherwise, the app does sync locations well.

I am on a private beta of the next release, but I believe the same should be true of the current release.

I am running the current stable release (i.e. the one before Alabama is using) and see the same behaviour that he describes.

Hence my question asking for clarification of the problem.

The thing we are waiting for is sync of Reading Plans (in the version Alabama is beta testing), sync of locations should work fine.

I'm reading the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture on my pc laptop. When I finish, I go to layouts, update to current snapshot, and click on the sync button. Then when I open my iPad, sometimes it opens to the same location, sometimes it does not. For a few weeks in Jan & Feb of this year, it was opening to the same page pretty regularly. Sometimes even when I went to the iPad immediately. Occassionally, I would have to close the iPad app and re-open it. However, during the last week or two, it never opens to the same place.

Saving the layout on your desktop is irrelevant for this issue. Making sure that your last read location info is included in a sync, however, is. My question for you: Have you been leaving the Ancient Christian Commentary open on your iPad, or did you open something else? What I am trying to say is that if you use the ACC on your iPad and leave off on page 25, it will probably open back up to page 25 unless you close the resource before closing the app. At least this is my understanding. Similarly, when you save a layout in L4, it should ALWAYS open all resources to where you left when you last saved (or autosaved) the layout.

I don't know what would be involved for Logos to move to a system like the Kindle, where the app will always ask if you want to advance to the last read location.

I am shutting down the entire app by double clicking the iPad button and then closing the app. How do I close the resource?

I wonder if there is a regression. It has been my experience that when I open a resource on my iPad that I have not been using, it opens to the place I left off from my Mac. On the other hand, if it was the last resource I used, it opened to the place I left off when I used my iPad last. However, because of your persistence [:)], I put the app to the test this morning, and it was hit and miss for me. I have written up a bug report, but since I am running a beta version, I will have to send it to the developers and not create a new thread here (since this forum is for the release version of the iOS app).

FYI - Here is what I am sending to the developers.

    BUG: Resource Location Sync

When moving between devices (iPhone / iPad / Mac), you would want to "pick up where you left off." This sometimes works, but it is inconsistent. In my example, I opened 131 Christians everyone should know. I turned to page 163 (T.S. Eliot) on My desktop. The resource had not been previously opened for some time. I then opened the resource on my mobile app (2.1RC2) and it opened to the title page. I turned the resource to page 136 (Dante Alighieri) on my iPhone, and when I reopened the resource on my Mac, it opened to page 136 (Dante Alighieri). I then turned to page 254 (Antony of Egypt) on my Mac; made sure to sync Logos 4; killed the mobile app; but when I reopened the mobile app, it turned to page 136 (Dante Alighieri).

Is this a bug or a feature that has not been brought over to sync v2?
