Could an experienced user help me with a search for scripture citations?

I'm sure there is a way to do an advanced search and accomplish the results I need and I am hoping that one of you more experienced users can explain it to me.

I am doing research on the NT quotations of the OT in the writings of the Early Church Fathers. Is there a way to do a search for a set of scripture references and limit the search to Schaff's Early Church Fathers series?

Is there a way that I could build a search to include a set of verses and then apply that search to different books as needed?

What I am trying to accomplish is to have search results that I could scan through that include every reference to a NT quotation of the OT. Maybe there is a better way. Anybody?

Wow, that would be a useful thing to have.

You can limit the search to Schaff's ECF series by selecting it in the "Search in" dropdown (start typing the first few letters of it until you see its name matching and you can then select it).

You can search for a specific set of scripture references in the ECF using the syntax:

    <Matt 4:15,16> OR <Mark 2:26> OR <Lk 20:37> OR <Rom 11:2> ...

(Be sure you put the OR's in all upper case, or they will be interpreted as words to search for.)

But you'd have to manually input the list of verses that you know to be NT quotations of the OT, and you might need to do the search in several batches if the line gets too long.

I assume if you're doing research on NT quotations of the OT you have access to a fairly comprehensive list of NT references that are deemed to be quotations of the OT, but if not, Kevin Becker has been at work on a project to highlight all OT quotations in the NT using visual filters, and he might have a list, or suggestions on how you could easily come up with one. I can't remember off the top of my head if there's a naked list of such references anywhere in a Logos resource.

Wow! That is a tremendous help. I knew how to limit the search to the church fathers, but didn't know the syntax for an OR search. I was trying lowercase. I'm new to Logos and don't understand how the visual filters work. How would I get in touch with Kevin Becker about his project?

I am using the list of quotations cited in the back of UBS4.

  • but didn't know the syntax for an OR search.

Wiki has Getting Started with Logos => Search that includes link to wiki page Detailed Search Help that has => Using Boolean Operators

Files forum => Search section added to Wiki PB (docx) has Wiki Search pages available for download for Personal Book creation.

I'm new to Logos and don't understand how the visual filters work.

There is a Logos tutorial video about Visual Filters. Also, the wiki has a page about Visual Filters: http://wiki.logos.com/Visual_Filter. Make sure to also check out the links under "See also" in the right sidebar.

How would I get in touch with Kevin Becker about his project?

Either post a response at the end of that thread (he probably tends to check threads he's participated in for any new activity) or click on his name to go to his profile and leave a comment there (which should result in a notice to his email inbox if he hasn't disabled that feature).

I hear tell that Logos is going to be coming out with a new method for sharing files (such as visual filters) among users, and Kevin is planning to make his available once that is ready. No idea when that's coming.

Kevin, with Logos 5 being here you can get a copy of my OT quotes in NT note file. Join the group OT Quotes in NT. Here's the thread in general http://community.logos.com/forums/t/28529.aspx and instructions in particular on how to get a copy  http://community.logos.com/forums/p/28529/426765.aspx#426765 I've noticed a few errors [:S] in it since I started sharing it, need to work on fixing those.
