NASB Paragraph Formatting

Is there any way to get my NASB95 to be paragraph formatted? As it is, it separates each verse as a paragraph, but I would really like to have the normal paragraph formatting like it is in my Bible, or even as it is shown on BibleGateway.com

I was also thinking if it is too difficult to change the current NASB95 that everyone might have, to be able to offer the current NASB95 as a 2 volume instead of a single. Then this update would be propagated to those who currently own NASB95. I would imagine that this wouldn't be that difficult of a transition since the current NASB95 has the paragraphs marked by Bold Verse indicators.

The resource formatting cannot be changed in L4; and I doubt an alternative version would be produced simply for readability concerns.

It would seem to me that it would be a pretty simple development. Since the sections in the resource already have the paragraph breaks noted, then wouldn't you do a massive, delete all paragraph breaks, and then insert paragraph break after bold verse number, and then finally unbold verse number?

If someone simply had the complete NASB text and Microsoft Word, one could do a one-liner find and replace to insert paragraphs and unbold verses. All of this would take under a single hour. I'm very sure that Libronox books are at a much higher complexity than a simple Microsoft Word document, but it is still text and tags at the highest level. It leads me to believe that a programmer can 1-liner this change in a very very short amount of time.

Generally a license is to produce a resource as it is in it's original form - not adding comments, changing structure etc. Logos has mentioned several times that they can't even change metadata for consistency within Logos because they license rather than own the data.

It appears you can do it yourself for free if you follow this post and format it as a Personal Book; you just need to update to the 4.3 beta to do this.

I don't think any reproduced PBB Bible is going to be as reliable, streamlined, and functional as what is released by Logos Bible Software. That being said, I don't understand why putting the bible in paragraph format would fall on my shoulders anyway.

In my library of Bibles, the only Bibles I have in NASB is a pre-95 edition. I don't understand why this would be in non-paragraph format.

It is my understanding the the NASB does not distinguish paragraph breaks, but is in the tradition of the KJV. I know that Zondervan sells NASB bible's in paragraph form. If my first premise is correct, than a separate license would be required to use the Zondervan text. Currently, this is NOT the text that Logos is using. Notice the two screen shots below:

Actually, the NASB does have "paragraph" information. The bold verse number marks a new paragraph. The version that WORDsearch has is from the Lockman Foundation & has paragraph formatting. Plus, my print Bible is from Cambridge & has paragraph formatting, with no Zondervan copyright, just the Lockman one. [:)]

Ryan - It seems to me like you are complaining because your vanilla ice cream isn't chocolate. The NASB translators wanted to de-emphasize the paragraph breaks. If you don't like that, switch to another translation. Might I recommend the ESV?

Actually it seems that I'm a customer, who has invested thousands of dollars in Bible software, that sits and studies God's word, with a physical Bible next to my computer, because of ease of readability instead of a half a chapter taking up the full height of a 21" monitor on max resolution.

I'm willing to pay for it, as I'm sure many other are, as I'm sure you're aware of current physical Bibles, and the great difficulty that it actually is in finding a paragraph formatted NASB.

Ryan - I hope Logos is able to accommodate you, but I would not get my hopes up. It would seem to me that there is a licensing issue, and also a lack of interest. Otherwise, there would not be (in your words):

A "one-liner find and replace" would be where you would take characteristics of the document, and based on the desired search and whatnot... do a bulk scan over the entire contents and replace accordingly.

So for their version of the NASB, they would do a search for the contents of the bold Verse numbers, and replace the verse number with an unbold, but then insert the programmatic syntax of a Logos Book "carriage return".

It's basically a big find and replace.

If you're familiar with SQL, it would be a SQL query.

I am not Ryan, but I can testify that it takes quite a while to build a good version of this. I like having it, but would have much rather bought it. And we can't legally share it without the publishers permission. I use the NASB almost exclusively so I wanted a NT in paragraph form. See for yourself how nice it is to read with everything stripped out.

I believe that I'm pretty quick at building personal books, and I'm alright with computers, but doing a couple hundred page book to my liking takes a couple hours. A normal book comes nowhere close to the complexity of a Bible...

If I had the docx of the NASB that logos uses, I think that I could, within a day, have a paragraph spaced NASB. If I had to start with just text, and convert to Logos, would take more time than I am willing to invest, and it would make more financial sense to purchase it instead of build my own.

Logos offers the 1977 NASB with paragraph formatting => The New American Standard Bible, 1977 edition that does not have reverse interlinear tagging.

Looking at a printed 1995 NASB, all verse numbers appear vertically aligned near the left margin, which is easy for quick visual scan to find verse number.

Concur. Thankful for Logos 4 Text Comparison, which can be done chapter by chapter to verify spelling. Files forum has => American Standard Version 1901 - Personal Bible without Chapter and Verse #'s

Note: the New American Standard Bible (NASB) is a revision of the American Standard Version.

Since Logos has a quick way to navigate to verses, perhaps the Lockman Foundation would allow a paragraph formatted NASB 1995 edition for Logos use, which does not require "modern" vertically aligned formatting of the verse number by the left margin. Also, Logos has "Bible Text Only" option, which can vertically align verse numbers in all Bibles.

Wonder if verse numbers are vertically aligned ?

After looking at five printed 1977 NASB Bibles and three 1995 NASB Bibles, noticed all of them have vertically aligned verse numbers. Paragraph formatting allows verse number to appear anywhere. Hence, personally a bit surprised by Logos 1977 NASB => The New American Standard Bible, 1977 edition having paragraph formatting that does not match hard copy pages. Thankful can check "Bible Text Only" in Logos 4 if want to see verse numbers vertically aligned.

Concur with desire for removal of vertical verse number alignment in NASB 1995; actually would prefer option to not show chapter and verse numbers that do not appear in original language manuscripts. The Greek New Testament did not have any chapter and verse numbers. Also, verse numbering does not correspond with sentence boundaries. For example, Ephesians 1:3-14 is one longish Greek sentence.

It is my understanding that the "non-paragraph" format comes from the translators as a philosophical/translation issue… I do know that Zondervan has published the NASB95u in a paragraph format. My guess is that this is a licensing issue.

EDIT: I re-read through this thread and see we've spoken before… [:)] I am not opposed to Logos providing this… I am just trying to answer why it was done this way. [I cannot think of a single reason Logos would have done this intentionally unless it came down from the publisher / translators.]

Logos 7 work around is using Discourse features (Greek) to show segment structure (blue words in left margin) plus can show words moved for emphasis (word spelling reflects grammatical usage). Background information is grey.

Discourse Datasets and Visual Filters were included in 6.12 release for Logos Now.

Visual filter that hides chapter and verse number leaves each verse starting on a new line. Awesome would be combination of NASB 95 verses into paragraphs when chapter and verse numbers are not being displayed.
