Logos 4 crash in Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Hello:

I installed Logo 4 on Windows 8 Consumer Preview and when I start the application it shows the splash, but almost immediately a windows appears saying: "Logos 4 has stopped working". Has anybody had this problem? I know Windows 8 CP is still under development, but I wanted to give it a try and see if I could operate al my software

Curious about Logos 4 version ? Logos 4 has stopped working is a crash.

One idea is trying Logos 4 Beta on Windows 8 Consumer Preview (another beta).

You should have logging permanently enabled because you will be expected to upload logs for diagnostic purposes to the appropriate Beta forum: PC Beta OR Mac Beta, especially after a crash. For more details see Windows Troubleshooting or Mac Troubleshooting.

Hello:

I installed the Beta version (4.5b) but Logos keeps crashing. I share with you the log files (this is the first time I do this, so I don't know exactly if you need the 3 files: Logos4.log, Logos4crash.txt and Logos4Error, but I upload them anyways). It also happens with Proclaim as well, it crashes right at the startup.

My initial analysis of these logs makes me think that this is a bug in .NET 3.5 on Windows 8 (and not specifically in Logos 4 or Proclaim).

What culture/locale/language settings are you using on Windows 8? (Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows 8 machine available to me right now, so I can't tell you where to find this, but it's probably in the "Region and Language" settings in the desktop control panel.)

First of all, thank you for your help, I really appreciate it (and the help of the others, too).

I'm using English as the main language. Actually, everything is set to English, and for the region it is set to United States (even though I live in Mexico). Actually, I didn't change any of the settings after installing (just the keyboard input method, because of the Spanish). About "culture", I'm not able to respond because I don't know what it means, but I'll try to find it out.

I'll try to reinstall .NET 3.5 and see what it happens. Thank you very much and I'll keep up to date. God bless you.

I just installed L4 in Windows 8 Consumer Preview (running in a Virtual Machine on Windows 7). I let W8 install .NET 3.5 as a feature via Control Panel | Programs and Features, and it required a small download to complete. Then i installed Logos 4 and it runs without problem. Perhaps you could re-install W8 and do the same?

It might be computer specific too. I had one laptop I put Windows 8 on and I have never had any problems running things. Logos runs swimmingly. On my other laptop, Windows 8 lasted about 3 hours, and the buggy performance had me returning to Windows 7 in a hurry. Oddly, the laptop that performs Windows 8 is the poorer machine, being more along the lines of a netbook and the laptop that had so many issues is a top of the line machine.

Are you running W8 natively on your computer or as guest OS on your current Windows installation?

I run the later W8 Release Preview virtualized within Windows 7 (using VirtualBox) and Logos 4.6 beta text is stable. I also had no problems when running v4.5 in W8 Consumer Preview. How did you install .NET 3.5?

This is almost certainly a video driver bug. I'd recommend checking if there are updated drivers available.

If not, or if updating the drivers doesn't help, it's possible that forcing WPF to use software rendering may fix the problem. To do this, find or create the registry key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics", then create a new DWORD value named "DisableHWAcceleration" with a value of 1. I have run the latest Logos production release on both Consumer Preview and the Release version of Windows 8 without problems. I have NVIDIA graphics cards, I can tell you there is no official Win 8 support for drivers yet in NVIDIA, not sure what your card is and what their situation is. That said, the latest drivers that come with Win 8 work, but you can't find them or anything later on NVIDIA's site. I agree this looks like a video card/driver problem...

Using the Win8 RC, myself. The only issue I am having started off WIn7 Home, and continued with Win8. That issue being "Indexer has stopped working".
Annoying, because I assume I can no longer fully rely on my searches to give me full search capabilities. So, when I replace Win8 with Win 7 (you do know you will have to start your PC from scratch, I hope) I hope the format process will fix everything. But, it may not.

At any rate, just so you know, Logos 4 is working on my Win8 system. I must state that I don't utilize the software the way it's intended, but, that's mostly because I have not gone through the learning curve, don't wish to pay Morris Procter a couple hundred dollars to teach me; and, just have not found the time to go through all the freebie videos. So, while it appears to work for me, perhaps because I don't use it to it's fullest potential, I am not finding any major issues. That being said, it does open, and I can access books, and do some searching. Therefore, I would think your issue is not WIndows 8 related, per se.

Thanks all so far. I am still having issues with it, but am working on finding the right drivers for my video card that are Win 8 compatible. Last resort will be an uninstall, reinstall of the Win 7 until the final Win 8 version comes out.

Or I just may go buy a Mac! Fortunately, most of my Logos use is on my iPad.

Sent it in to the call center. I hadn't been able to call back, as she suggested I call level 2 and I knew it would be a problem. However, when I went back to Win 7 yesterday, it seems to have corrected itself. I would have thought going to 8 would have, but it didn't. Since the RC version of 8 requires a complete reinstall of 7, whatever the issue was got fixed.

Hi there,

First of all, thank you very much for your help. I noticed something: I installed Windows 8 Release Preview and Logos started working better. I read somewhere that there was a problem with .NET Framework 3.5 in Windows 8, and it was true. I had problems with it. But the thing I noticed is that when I set my keyboard layout to "Latin America" Logos stopped working. As long as I keep the US keyboard layout, Logos works with no problems. It sometimes stopped working when I want to search something, but usually it doesn't freeze nor stops working.

So I think the problem is related to some stuff regarding the keyboard layout. I can launch Logos with the US keyboard layout, but not with the Latin American one hope this helps to further development.

I hope to continue listening to more experiences with Windows 8. As for me, I'll keep it as my main OS; it's faster than Windows 7 in my opinion, and I like the interface too.
