Helpful Tags

On the advice of Morris Proctor at a recent Camp Logos I am now in the process of tagging all the books in my library. For the most part I have followed his suggestions regarding subject tags and author tags. I have also seen the wiki on collections that also helps with tagging. However, I am curious if there are any tags that other users have found especially helpful for doing bible study, sermon preparation, etc. Author tags are pretty straightforward so I suppose I am primarily looking for subject matter tags. Any thoughts?

Here is my scheme and the rules I follow. I need to do some clean up on the rules. Essentially every book in my 4000 resource collection is tagged, many with multiple tags. I can not imagine trying to work with a large untagged collection.

My personal preference is using a mix of Logos metadata (e.g. author:, subject:, title:, publisher:, language:, type:) plus tagging.

Well that is hard to answer. Sometimes it is the less frequently searched tags that are most helpful since I am not a familiar with those resources in my library.

The BIG thing is to keep a list of all the tags you use with a definition of what kind of resources get that tag (a controlled vocabulary of your tags).

I do use some dynamic collections, but only a means of forming superset of tagged books. Dynamic collection more computer resources to run which is probably the least of their faults. The greater fault is that they take a TON of effort to adjust almost every time you add new resources to your library. Tagging is much faster for both the human and the computer. Use library searches (like collection rules) to help you with the large initial task of tagging all you current resources. After that tagging is quick and easy. Keep you list of dynamic collections short.

I am currently adding more "Perspec-" tags to my resources. This way when I open a seldom used resource I can quickly look at the information panel to recalled its slant. As I work with a resource and notice some systemic bias then I immediately add the correct "Perspec-" tag. (At this point I have not found a need to search of these tags as they are more of a meta-data tag than a classification tag.

I would be interested in seeing your bibliography with your tags as I am one of those people that has to tag 4300 books I know I have a lot of work ahead of me. But if I could see your work - it would save me hours, if not days, of work.

This file is very instructive and thought provoking. I converted it to a spreadsheet in msExcel format. It has 3 sheets (1) the main table, (2) your statement of principles, and (3) symbols and abbreviations. On the first table, your footnotes are at the bottom of the table.
