Logos 4: Can I Add a third party libraries intended for Logos 3 and have it recorgnized by Logos 4?

I purchased an upgrade an up grade to Silver 3 last week not knowing that Logos 4 would be released this week.

Since then I have upgraded to Logos 4 with out uninstalling my Logos 3. I have plans to add some some additional 3 party libraries intended for Logos 3. On the install of Logos 4, it seemed to catch all the third party libraries with out any problems. Will Logos 4 continue to catch any addtional logos 3 libraries I add to the installed Logos 3?

BTW: Logos 4 is not the worst software upgrade I have ever seen. But I am in serious mourning over losing my 800 plus pbbs.

Hi Peter,

My Max Lucado Lifeworks Library and eBible books from Thomas Nelson seem to have come over to Logos 4 successfully with no issues.

PBB support will be added back to Logos 4 sometime next year, and improved (will use standard Logos format, I believe).

I think that would be easy to test. If you have a Logos 3 version of any third party CD, for example the Theological Journal Library, insert the CD and see if Logos 4 installs it.

My guess is that logos tracks the resources you own in your online logos account and not on your PC. If you install Logos 3 and sync your licenses, and the resources are available in 4, you should be okay. I would confirm with Logos first. Easy on the support staff though. I'm sure they are overworked at the moment.

I have the Theological Journals installed on the computer and when I downloaded L4, the journals showed up in L4 and I have access to them in L3 as well.

If you add something to L3, you'll need to use the "Scan" command in the command box in L4 with the full path to your L3 resources. L4 will scan the files and add any "new" ones you bring in after you initially install L4. When it is initially installed, L4 scans and moves over whatever is "unlocked." Your licenses in L3 are on the Logos server so L4 has them too. L4 won't move "locked" resources over. If you unlock something by buying it, the license on the Logos server is updated and L4 downloads the latest copy of the resource from the server.

That will depend on the size of your PBB collection. A full index will be automatically triggered when your supplemental index reaches 25% of your master index.

I wasn't able to do this. It just searches for the word scan, rather than scan for unlocked titles. I upgraded from Logos 3, where I had the Theological Library 4, MacArthur Lifeworks, Hayford Lifeworks, and a bunch of E4 software from when they supported Logos software. I upgraded to Logos 4 and everything transfered over with no problems.

However, I just recently purchased an old R.C. Sproul Lifeworks disc and I was able to install on Logos 3 with the whole program manager, copy unlock on media, etc. When I opened Logos 4, it wasn't available there. I don't know what to do and support had a 30 minute wait which seemed longer so I hung up.

I'm disappointed that Logos 4 doesn't have that same tool on Logos 3 under tools and resource manager, location, etc.

BTW, this Sproul CD was so old that it had no license # prompt so I doubt that anything went to the Logos server where it would then sync with my Logos 4.

Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks!!!

Does a license show up in L3 for the Sproul CD? And can we confirm that you sync'ed your licenses after installing to, and restarting L3?

If yes to the above you could try this: type scan C:\Libronix\Resources into L4's command bar (assumes that your Sproul collection was installed to your hard drive at that location). This may pick it up for you. If not report back.

I'm not at all sure what "this" is. I think you must be talking about the scan command

Type "scan c:\path\to\my\libronix\resources" in the command window (put the path you have for your L3 resources and don't put in the " marks)

It will scan your L3 resources and add any that aren't in your L4. You may have to sync (Update Now or even Update Resources) after that to get any updates of those resources that are available for L4 - Logos is going through everything, from every publisher and updating it.

did the scans and nada, nothing. i see the sync icon go, but nothing gets updated.

I checked on my L3 system and it doesn't show the Sproul library in the licenses. I am able to access my Sproul books on L3 though.

Again, I am able to access all the other old stuff as it transferred over on the initial install, but I added this Sproul library after L4 was operative. Don't know what to do. Thanks for your help though!!!

You need to Synch Licences on L3, because it is obvious your local copy knows it is unlocked. When the Synch occurs L4 should get the licence and you can try the scan again (allow 30 minutes for all this) - and you should also get the details in L3 account summary!

We have not yet even been able to beta test the new PBB add-in. (Hopefully available 2nd quarter of 2010).

There are already so many posters here confused because they have "lost" their PBB's.

You're right. We don't know whether PBBs will be indexed or anything about them. If they are, then the same rule will apply as for other resources regarding the size of the supplemental index.

None of those steps worked. Believe it or not, I uninstalled Logos 4, reinstalled it, even though it took yet another day of waiting, but walaa Sproul showed up in the reinstall.

The reason the link didn't work is because the beta forum is still only accessible to those who were in the beta group. The beta testers advised Logos not to open it up. What Bob has said, he's shown over the years, Bob will do. Don't attribute Gates' integrity to anyone with a "B" at the beginning of their name.

I notice on the pre-pub page for a resource it says:

If you're using Logos Bible Software 4, you must choose the DOWNLOAD option. The 3.0 CD-ROM or DVD-ROM requires version 3 of the Libronix Digital Library System.

I'm assuming that is means that if you don't have version 3, then you must choose the version 4 download because the version 3 resource can't be used directly by Logos 4?

But if a person has both Logos 3 and Logos 4, and for various reasons wants to continue to be able to use both, then it would seem they must obtain the resource in version 3 format, but also know it will, once unlocked and synced, also be available in Logos 4?

Is there any scenario where a user with both Logos 3 and Logos 4 could purchase a resource in version 3 format and not be able to access it in Logos 4 if everything works as it is supposed to? If there isn't, then doesn't it make the best sense for those who want to continue to use Logos 3 to always purchase new resources in version 3 format so they are available on both?

Just double-checking before I sign up for a new pre-pub. I want to use it in both versions so assume I need to purchase the version 3 format--but would like to know otherwise if I'm misunderstanding how this works.

Your first Q is tautological - "if everything works as it is supposed to" there is no failure scenario! There are 2 or 3 possible scenarios that would delay the process but you have the scan command in L4 to retrieve the resource from the v3 CD/DVD!

The answer to the second Q is "Yes" because it provides a path to L4, whereas an L4 resource does not provide a path to L3.

Actually, this is not strictly true. I'm wanting to find out how it is intended to work, rather than how it happens to work at the moment (with possible bugs). The intention, even when working perfectly, might have required purchasing separate resource formats for each version--although I doubted that would be the case. [:)]

Thanks for clarifying that what I suspected was the intention is how it is really supposed to work.
