It works correctly for me - on an iPad (but I would have expected this to be the same as the iPhone)

I think your analysis is correct and that you are executing a Basic search as opposed to a Bible one - can you double check that you have Bible selected when you perform the search?

On the other hand - be it one Bible or many (here it is many) the Bible references are less helpful.

I don't seem to have Paul's problem with the rolling switch though.

I seem to think that this is a basic search because on my screen there seems to a different 'highlight' on the two buttons. Perhaps it is just an artefact on my monitor.

Graham - you are right - but how daft is that? The greyed out button is the live one.

Logos first in human/machine interface design.

We are going to need a standard answer for this one - it is bound to keep cropping up.

Edit - Having looked again I see now that this is not meant to be a sliding switch - but is meant to be a 'depressed button' not a very good implementation of the graphic I think.

We'll see if others find it intuitive!

Hi Graham,

Yes, the Bible button is pressed when I do the searches. (Which, in my opinion is the way it should work.) Interestingly, I tried some searches offline. Using the ESV it does a proper Bible search. However, using the NAS it only does a Basic search. Maybe the programmers don't consider the NAS to be a Bible! :-)

Glad to hear it is working on iPads. Can anyone out there in user-land confirm whether or not they have the same issue as I have (see above) when searching a single Bible on an iPhone or an iPod Touch?

Your screen shot shows that you ARE reproducing the problem! What book of the Bible is the Chapter 4 - NASB95 search result in? What book of the Bible is the Chapter 6 - NASB95 search result in? When you do a Bible search, the full reference is listed.

If you x out of the search you did above and look at the search history list, you will see that the sanctification search was a Basic search, not a Bible search.

The hits don't designate the reference. The third one does (Psalm 141), but the first two do not.
The hits are in an apparent random order (rather than canonical order, for example).
In my screen shot below, the two searches appear as "Basic" rather than "Bible" (I have no idea if there is any significance to this or not. Was the search actually performed as a "basic" search, or is the fact that the history says it was a "basic" search meaningless?)

Yes, the point is that though the "Bible" button was pressed by the user with the intention to do a Bible search, the app is actually doing a Basic search. I don't have online access for my iPod at the moment, so I can't include a screen shot, but if you do a Bible search and in the rolling selector choose "Top Bibles" rather than "NAS", you will get an actual Bible search and the difference in the results will be very apparent (and, in my opinion, much more useful than the results offered with a Basic search).

Unfortunately, since I don't have online access for my iPod at the moment, I can't do a "Top Bibles" search, nor can I post a screen shot. It won't be until much later tonight or even tomorrow that I'll have opportunity to do that........Actually, if you look earlier in this thread at Graham Criddle's first response, you will see a screen shot (on an iPad) of the actual Bible search. Your statement makes the point that I've tried to raise from time to time in these forums. As nice as community notes are, etc., some of us would really like to have some serious attention paid to the basics, like searching. We still are not able to narrow the context of a Bible search to a specific book of the Bible or to the Gospels, etc. At the moment (as we have been discussing), even searching the whole Bible doesn't work properly! Can't get much more basic than this in a Bible app!

Anyway, I've been able to create the screen shots I promised earlier. Here is a "Top Bibles" search that shows results as you would expect them--Full book, chapter, verse references and sorted in canonical order:

Next is an attempt at a single version Bible search (note that the "Bible" button in the top right is "depressed"). You'll see that reference citations refer only to the Chapter number and results are not sorted in canonical order:

(Note that the search result for Psalm 141 seems to have a more complete reference, but I think that is just because instead of tagging the "chapters" as "Chapter 141" they are tagged as "Psalm 141".)

Finally, here is a screen shot after tapping the x and Cancel buttons to show search history. You will see that the NAS search is identified as a Basic search, but the Top Bibles search is identified as a Bible search:

Interestingly, my history shows that one of my ESV searches was a Bible search, rather than a Basic search.....I haven't been able to repeat that! All of them since then are doing the same goofy thing that the NAS ones have been doing all along.

Kevin, if you're reading, hopefully you can pass this along to the programmers, and hopefully we get a fix sooner rather than later. The inability to do even simple searches is what keeps me going to Olive Tree rather than Logos on my iPod.

The issue of Book names not appearing and (also) of results being shown out of order with Basic searches was written up over two weeks ago. I thought you meant that NO results were showing with an NAS online/offline Bible Search. I'll write up another case - thanks for the report!
