My Ipad Logos is constantly crashing as it tries to sync

Was this a fresh install Oran update install from an earlier version? Can you follow the app size to see if it is growing?

Probably no connection… but what I meant was did you install the mobile app fresh, or did you just update it via the app store?

Do you know how large your note/highlight files are? How many books do you have downloaded? Is it crashing while using a certain resource?

How do I find out how large my note/highlight files are? I would think they are very large though because all my notes/highlights go into just a few of them. Also, I believe I have about 12 books downloaded on my iPad.

The best way would be to find them in on your computer. Are you on Mac or PC?

There are two issues: having individually large note documents and having collectively large note documents.

If you delete the app from your device, it will delete all of your user data. By downloading it again from the app store, you are doing a fresh install. NOTE: you will lose your downloaded resources. Since you only have 12, that should not be a big deal. I would really recommend that you do this. The app may ask if you want to redownload previously downloaded resources… I would tell it NO. This would provide one way of seeing how large your note files are. [Subtract the final app size after syncing stops from the app size itself.]

I spoke too soon. The iPad app was crashing again this morning as it tried to sync. I have deleted the app and have done a fresh install. Before the crash the size of the iPad app was 468 MB. After the fresh install it is now 88 MB.

I'm wondering if my note files for my highlighting have gotten too large and this is causing the problems in the syncing of my windows Logos and iPad Logos. Right now all of my highlights from all of my books go into basically one note file - and I do a lot of highlights. But I don't want to have a separate note file for each of the different books that I highlight as that would be too many note files. Any suggestions? Lastly, I'm not quite sure how to make my highlights on the windows Logos go into a different note file.

I don't know if the issue is how large the single file is… although it could be. Personally, I have lobbied for Logos to create resource (book) specific note files which operate "behind the scenes" unless needed.

Right click on a highlighting palette. This will give you the option to:

Continue saving the highlights in a "palette specific" note file.
Choose another file to save to
Choose to save in most-recent note file.

For what its worth… I do create a note file for every book. I open the note file when I begin reading a book and since it was the "most recent" note file, all my highlights for that book go into that file. I chose to use this system when I was beta testing 2.x builds. I spent MANY hours moving notes from the pallet specific note file to new, resource specific ones. This did stop the crashing for me… Based upon your other posts, I don't know if I would suggest all that trouble just yet.

Can you open the note file and pretend to print? I am interested to know how many pages your pallet specific note file would take.

I am reluctant to advise you to do this just yet, although that may be the best route in the end. Let's see if we can get some response from Logos before you take that drastic measure.

I assume you mean to ask about changing your strategy… I think it would really be impossible for you to move that many notes to individual note files at this point…

As for a strategy… I have created a new note file for each book (I create them as needed). To make this system work, I switch the behavior of the palette so that the highlight notes go into the last used note file. I call this "sticky." This behavior is great when you are highlighting through ONE book at a time. You simply set the note document when you start reading and then highlight away. If you are reading more than one book at a time, you must remember to change the note file back when you make the first highlight in the new book.

As Alabama mentions, it's generally not a good idea to keep everything in one note file. When you say your note file his 1135 pages long, how are you determining the length? Also, it would be helpful to know the size of your notes.db file. Thanks!

David - Let me walk you through getting your notes.db file. First, you will need to access you Mac OS Library. In 10.7 & 10.8, this is hidden. To view it, open a finder window. Go to the GO menu and press and hold the option key. This will reveal your library. You will need to navigate to the Notes folder by using the path I have given you below. NOTE: one folder will be a randomly generated name, but it should be obvious. Let me know if you have any troubles with finding it.

Hi David - the default location on Vista and Windows 7 is:

C:\Users\[Your user name]\AppData\Local\Logos4\Documents\[Random Logos]\Documents\Notes

The two fields in bold are your user name, and the random string Logos generates when it installs on your system. Both should be obvious if you navigate through Windows Explorer.

Yes, what you say is true, but management and development designed it that way for a reason.

For example, by default MS Word saves every document to the users's Documents directory - even if they don't want it there. It's up to the user to change the location as needed and it's not Word's responsibility to second guess the user. Similarly, Logos gives you the choice of which Note Document you want to save your Notes in, but maybe it isn't as obvious as it should be or the usability flow could be better.

If by default the Logos app asked every time (for every note created) which note document the user wanted to store their note in, it would indeed solve this problem by forcing the user to choose a specific note document every single time. However, I can already envision the usability complaints, as in "BUG: Logos used to remember my note document but now I'm forced to select it every single time I create a note!"

In the end, we don't want the application to get in the way of productivity but we can probably do a better job of explaining best practices. Most people know the concept of categorizing files in different folders so they (or others) can easily access them in the future, but "Note Document" and "Note" doesn't exactly translate to "Folder" and "File" - even though it's the same concept.

Looking at the size of your notes.db I would not have expected a sync problem, but based on your experience it appears if the content of a single note document gets too large it crashes Logos on iOS. I will be testing this issue in the next couple of weeks.

At this point I would suggest splitting your notes into multiple note documents, and in the future try to make it a habit to categorize your notes into appropriately named note documents.

Your suggestion is intriguing and makes a lot of sense. On the other hand, note documents - if viewed as topical repositories combining notes from any/every resource that might add to the topic at hand - can as a result bring together like information from a great many resources. I admire the concept of gathering specific information on a topic from myriad resources into a a single place.

However, I admit I'm clearly biased since I think of note documents more as folders that hold the notes I want them to, regardless of which resource the notes came from.
