And why?
Once there is a free upgrade or paid cross grade, the only reason I can think of would be if your operating system does not run L5. It is L4 only better in every way.
Hard to say.
They say in Vermont, molassas can be pretty tasty. But then Bob was threatening to speed L4 up similar to L5 (at least on the Mac anyway). So maybe the days of leisurely Bible study are coming to an end.
Those were the good old days.
I am sticking with L4 because there is no cross grade yet. Once there is a cross grade, I expect I will update to L5.
Despite my concerns on the manner that Logos 5 has been released, I do not intend to remain with Logos 4 once the cross-grade is released. At that time I will be able to assess what is the most prudent method of upgrading and do so then or by Christmas time.
From what I have been able to see from user videos, it is the little things the Logos team have done that are worth mentioning: that bar over panels to show activity focus, that little "x" in each panel to quickly close them, and all those search help examples built-in. Of course that clause search looks very interesting. I like the appearance of the revised interface, and as a reader like that they had line spacing control now.
Logos 5 is definitely a step forward, and from someone in the "unhappy camp," it is truly unfortunately that its release has been marred.
Regards
I simply have the books that I need, and do not want any of the books that are in the various packages.
I'm personally not quite sure that there were ever "the good old days" anytime anywhere! However, be that as it may .... I thank you for the memories .... *smile*
Sort of nice to get a real whiff of Nostalgia! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KODZtjOIPg
Sticking with L4, coz I do not want to loose New International Greek Commentary and Pillar Commentary set, which came with L4 Platinum
You never LOSE any titles that you already have.
Those are no longer in the new base package offerings, but current owners retain them regardless of what future upgrades they make.
See the Frequently Asked Questions.

I upgraded from L4 Platinum to L5 Platinum. That gave me more than 450 additional titles. I did not lose any of my previous titles.
So, if someone goes from Logos 4 Scholar to the free Logos 5 engine, what Logos 4 features are lost?

I mean, I did not purchase them additionally. They came "with" L4. So, if I purchase/upgrade to L5, I will still have them? This is the only thing that is stopping me from upgrading... I thought, IF I upgrade, then I will loose these commentaries. Thank you for the link and for your help!
This has been a sad misunderstanding and unfortunately has caused you unneeded concern and disappointment. Once purchased all resources belong to you for life. If you purchase a new package in L5 (the same name or one with a different name) you lose nothing, but gain the new resources which show up on the Upgrade page when you click in a package and select 'New to You.'
Help us help other folks avoid the same sad feeling you must have had, and I hope this has made it possible for you to make the switch.

Well., Thank you for your response! I just talked with the customer support., and I was told that I will NOT loose anything, but ONLY add more, based on the upgrade I choose!! So, its all set now! Will see how Diamond works/helps me!

I'm sticking with L4 until I can evaluate the upgrade. I wrestled with getting an upgrade but decided against it for now.
Here is Bradley Grainger's reply: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/58232.aspx
I am waiting to see the crossgrade option. However I suspect that it may be a better value to upgrade to a L5 package. (After looking at the upgrade I would take)
I hope its soon!!!!!
I think from what Logos has said we might see it in a week or two.

I wish Logos were better at understanding how important 'little things' can be. The things you have to put up with or work around dozens of times a day are far more annoying than a bug you only have to deal with every other month.
I didn't buy L4 (anything) because when it first came out it was incomplete.
This didn't sit well - I wouldn't buy MS Office if it was incomplete either.
However I think i had some things were 'not supported' because I didn't have the minimum content to use with those features.
Then I just gave up on Logos for a while during most of the L4 release...
I might - maybe buy L5 xgrade if it is fully feature complete tho.
Depending on if i can install it on a computer without the internet during the installation, and if all 'non internet' features work without the internet too.
I am hoping we get word from Morris Proctor and others regarding available training on new features and functionality of Logos 5.
As usual, I believe the value of the base packages is incredible. I can't wait to upgrade my content.

Sticking with 4 because it seems to me that the only new titles I would get would be all language related and thats all above my head!
Peace to you, Daniel! Welcome to the Logos Forums! It's good to see you post! Please visit again with your ideas, perhaps helps for other Logos Users, any questions or just to share!
My laptop runs Windows XP, so I have no choice...I'll continue to use L4 on it. It appears the differences between L4 and L5 are minimal, unlike the switch from L3 to L4, so that won't be a big issue.
I will cross grade on my office computer, which runs Windows 7, as soon as it is available. I plan to skip Windows 8 entirely (just like I skipped Vista), so I'll be running 7 for a number of years (hopefully). Keeping XP has worked extremely well, so I anticipate the same keeping W7. If I ever replace the laptop, I'll obviously automatically cross grade then.
For the time being...still paying off last years christmas purchases...but only one more payment to go, I think...so hopefully the personalised crossgrade offers will remain through December, and then I will consider L5! I am still having trouble understanding the dots on the "new to you" page...it seems to give me different stories each time I try studying it.
Keeping some Logos 4 installations for forum research and replies plus beta testing.
Likewise have Logos 5 installations for beta testing on Windows 7 and OS X 10.8
Keep Smiling [:)]

Not unlikely. It's broken.

Option is contacting Logos Sales to discuss L5 upgrade modification to payment plan, which can also include pre-publications with ship date.
Looking forward to Logos fixing black dots on upgrade page; while talking with another user, noticed black dots appeared in a couple columns.
I still have one XP box, so it stays on L4. Windows 8 doesn't seem like a compelling upgrade for that machine, but I might change my mind. I think they are doing cheap upgrades to Win 8 because they might not be able to sell it otherwise.
I would have stayed with L4 longer otherwise, but God graciously provided me with the L5 upgrade and new hardware. L5 is L4 on steroids!.
Hi Daniel! Welcome to the forums!
Just wanted to clarify in case you misunderstood… Base packages are unrelated to the software… except that L5 isn't currently available to users who haven't purchased (or updated) to a new base package. L5 will be available to you in the not too distant future either with a minimal cross grade (if you want new features and data sets) or as a free engine (which would be similar to updated from one version of L4 to another version of L4).
Further to my post yesterday, after further investigation, I migrated from L4 Platinum to L5 Silver. For me this was an acceptable price, with only one data set missing, which I hope to purchase later for a whole lot less than what upgrading to L5 Gold would have cost. The additional $100 or so I paid, assuming the cross grade is around an $100 or so, contained some materials I was happy to include in my library.
As expected, the migration to L5 was smooth, and I am enjoying L5 already. If others are not looking for a costly upgrade, as mentioned by folks in other threads, Silver is a great option provided there are sufficient new resources for you in the bundle. Otherwise, waiting for the cross grade is probably still the best option.
What exactly is a cross grade?
New features require certain resources and data sets. A "minimal cross grade" gives you the licenses needed to access the new features. If you don't think you need or want the new features, you will be able to update the software engine only for free.
Peace, Daniel! *smile* Here is a link to a longer post by Bob Pritchett, Logos President and CEO. This is as official as one can get!

I upgraded already. I've noticed little difference, but (other than the first start after a PC Boot) it seems to run faster. I have windows seven with a ton of memory, but I still have a slow 5400 RPM drive. I have not had time to play with much but just seems to run faster.
All my settings and layouts were preserved. It even started with my last V4 layout after the upgrade and I opened V5 the first time.
I do like the Document management. I now pick to sort by type in the documents tab, so I can browse notes, clippings, etc. separately.
I've already fell in love with the thematic outlines. I have created a custom guide with this and some other features that I like.
in short I don't know if there are "killer" features that make upgrade a must, but I did get some nice improvements without having to relearn Logos as I did from v2 to v3 and form v3 to v4.
If you got the money i would suggest upgrading. if you do not have the funds V4 is still a good product.
After being hesitant, I finally upgraded to L5.
For me the packages are better than they were under L4. I was Platinum under L4, and would have never considered the L4 Portfolio.
However, the L5 Diamond package gave me plenty of reasons to pick up The New Wesleyan Bible Commentary, the R. C. Sproul Commentaries, several other Bible Commentary sets, and the LSJ Greek Lexicon at a bargain price. So I upgraded for the books.
I am very pleased with the upgrade.

I'm happy for you. I agree the contents of the packages are more useful now. It seems that Portfolio has a lot more commentaries now and will better serve preachers. I still find plenty of historical and background material to woo me. The included commentaries were several I wanted but missed out on. I wish they had an Archaeology base package. [ip]
It appears the differences between L4 and L5 are minimal
Perhaps you need to take a look at Mark Barnes' video intro to L5 http://community.logos.com/forums/p/59381/422707.aspx#422707
Also, if you hold the shift key down and click on another column, your documents will sort by that column which maintaining the sort by type.
I'm staying with 4 because I just got done paying for it a few months ago. The upgrade for my Silver is $461. So far I've seen nothing even close to make it worth the upgrade.
I've actually been using my Dake bibles in paper form and it's been great! Cheaper too. Less upgrades to download, no indexing, one price and it's paid for, requires no electricity, several copies are still under $100, and my layouts are never lost. [:D]

Thanks for that link, Jack. That is a helpful video.
Fortunately, I was right...the differences are indeed minimal. Compared to how much the program changed between L3 and L4, the changes from L4 to L5 are primarily added resources and a few re-arranged items. As far as interface, they are basically the same program. So using both L4 on my XP machine and L5 on my desktop (assuming I get the cross-grade) will be fairly effortless as compared to using L3 and L4, as I did for a month or so after that upgrade. It was so cumbersome that I finally quit using L3, even though I liked it a great deal.
After watching Mark Barnes' video I decided not to wait on upgrading. I knew I would eventually upgrade for the contents of the new base package. I was a little apprehensive about the learning curve until I watched the video. Now I have to find the power cord to my laptop. It is still in the moving boxes. [:S]
Yep
I am, until there's a crossgrade or upgrade option I can afford--which after $400 of classic commentaries delivered yesterday thru December, may be the free upgrade at whatever point it becomes available.
I spent several days reviewing the options and writing down what in each option I'd like to have and working on how I could financially swing Portfolio. Then suddenly the price was jacked up so much it was totally out of reach! How in the world did their finely tuned pricing change? I notice things like the Warfield collection that I bought less than 2 years ago listed. Of course Benjamin might have written an update. I'm looking through the large amount I spent last two end of year holiday seasons and noted I have not come close to reading them. Because of the above I've decided to be content with what I have.
Hebrews 13:5 be content with what you have
Philippians 4:11 I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content
1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain
