What IS Vyrso?

Given that there is no tutorial, let me ask for some getting started help for Vyrso on an Android phone.

What is Vyrso? By that I mean what should I expect it to be and how will that impact how I try to use it?

· Is it an eReader? Well, yes, I suppose. However there doesn't seem to be an easy way to sort and find books, especially with all the Logos books available (though I may be glad they are). I found another post or two on this and it was suggested to type ebooks in the Library search field, but that didn't work on my Android phone. Apart from that drawback, it seems like a functional eReader if it has bookmarking, though I haven’t found that yet.

· Is it a study tool? Probably not. An Android phone may suffice for reading, but not getting serious work done. That takes a PC. And on the PC I have Logos for a study tool.

· Is it a ready Bible tool? This is the important thing. I'd especially like it to be a ready Bible tool. On my Palm I had a Bible Reader that was extremely fast to switch between versions (Greek and English) and between passages, so it was handy to use sitting in a Bible class or having a discussion with someone. Hitting one button listed the Bible versions, hitting another button listed the books, etc. So I could move from version to version or passage to passage very rapidly. So far I haven't figured out how to do switching quickly enough in Vyrso to use it for this.

My initial take is that it is basically an eReader for the reasons mentioned above.

Bottom line -- what is Vyrso? Put differently, what should I expect it to be in order to use it effectively?

Let me first answer the question "What is Vyrso" in a more general sense.

Vyrso is the new "trade" eBook store from Logos. "Trade" books are what the majority of books would be in your local "Christian" bookstore. This includes everything from Amish romance novels; children's books; "Christian" living, and more. Some of these books may be very beneficial to your study, but they are not "academic" and are intended for a general audience.

"Vyrso" as such, can refer to:

    1. The eBook store itself
    2. The edition type of resource ("Vyrso" in contrast with "Logos")
    3. The mobile app "Vyrso"

Your question is geared more towards the mobile app, so let me try to answer those questions.

First, you should know that the "Vyrso" app and the "Logos" app are built upon the same code. The "Vyrso" app is stripped down. The "Logos" app is more for study; the "Vyrso" app is more for reading.

What distinguishes the "Vyrso" app from other eBook readers you might find?

    1. Scripture references are automatically hyperlinked. When you come across a reference, tap on it and the verse will appear in a popup.
    2. It reads (of course) "Vyrso" books. The advantage for purchasing "Vyrso" books over a competitor is that the book will appear in Logos for you to use in your study.

there doesn't seem to be an easy way to sort and find books

As you discovered elsewhere, you can sort by using the term "eBook". I can't respond to how this may or may not work on Andriod. On iOS, you must be online for it to work. Feel free to ask more questions in the ANDRIOD FORUM

if it has bookmarking, though I haven’t found that yet

On iOS you can swipe down and click "add to favorites."

what should I expect it to be in order to use it effectively

The app is undergoing some major changes to add highlighting and notes, which will make it more useful.

Not only can you read vyrso books in Logos.  You can also read Logos books in vyrso, which I do.  I treat it as an E-reader in which I can also read my Logos books.  Vyrso books are sometimes lightweight reading, which I appreciate when I'm brain dead.  But I also enjoy reading books with rather more substance in vyrso.  I like the 2 page spread, which I could doubtless get in the Logos app, but am too idle to learn how.  I keep that for Bible study with Bible on one side and commentary on the other.  Some of this will obviously not be relevant to using vyrso, or Logos app on android.

I haven't seen a two page spread using two different documents yet. That would be helpful as you point out. In fact even though my Palm app didn't have commentaries, I kept an English Bible open in one window and a Greek Bible in the other. I can see multiple uses. Maybe the Android version doesn't have it yet, or maybe I just don't know where to look. I did discover today how to more quickly change from one passage to another within a Bible. However I discovered that trying to swipe down to see how to set a bookmark, and I still don't see where to set a bookmark.

    alabama24,

Thanks. Yes, I probably should post some of the more specific questions to the Android forum. Thanks for pointing that out.

Knowing Logos is designed for study and Vyrso for reading is helpful. At least I know I'm going down the right path in how to think about using them, though the flexibility of using either for either purpose at least to some extent is nice.

  • Maybe the Android version doesn't have it yet

Android thread => android App have a split screen like the iOS App has a link to Frequently Asked Questions whose list of planned features includes split screen.

Vyrso on iOS devices (e.g. iPad) has split screen feature.

As an e-reader, what other formats are compatible with vyrso?

Ron, I am not aware of any others, only within the logos ecosystem.

    I like Apples.  Especially Honeycrisp.

Ron – Dan is correct… only Vyrso and Logos resources are compatible with the Vyrso reader. It is a proprietary reader (just like Kindle, Nook, etc.).

So if I own Logos 5 w/iPhone and iPad app, why would I use Vyrso?  Admittedly, I haven't played around with Vyrso much, but what little I have, it looks like I can do the same things using the Logos iPad/iPhone app.  Sure, I can purchase books on Vyrso, but other than that, am I missing something? Thanks!

Please disregard.  I should have read further on the forums to find my answer.
