I have discovered a problem between Logos5 and Power Point 2011 for the Mac. I was trying to hyperlink a reference to my ESV bible in Power point. However when i click on the link it says Power point is unable to open file. I have included a link to the forum discussion concerning this and a screen shot of my computer.

Power Point & Logos under the General tab in the forums is where the thread is. I thought I could copy and paste the link but it doesn't work.

The problem is with Office on the Mac, not with Logos. It mangles the links.

So Mark, do I need to contact Office on the Mac for a fix? How do I do that? [:)]

I think Microsoft would simply say "it's not supported", rather than "it's a bug". The problem is that they only support a very limited number of protocols such as http, ftp, mailto, file, and so on. They don't support proprietary protocols such as itpc (iTunes) and logos4.

That's disappointing! So I'm stuck ? No recourse for resolution or a fix?So though the issue is with PowerPoint they're not obligated to address it because the problem is with a third-party software?

I guess so. Office on the Mac has never quite been up to par — but then Keynote doesn't support the protocol either.

Why doesn't it work with Keynote?

Exactly the same reason. They've chosen to make it so it only supports standard linking systems, not proprietary ones.

I surely would hope that this issue would be addressed by Logos. This is a major feature for presentation and if it doesn't work with either powerpoint or keynote on the mac that's a real problem. So what about with proclaim? As a student proclaim isn't what I would primarily use in the classroom for presentations so there should be something that can be done to fix this in powerpoint or keynote! I can't say how frustrating this is! [8o|][U]

Per discussion above what can logos do to fix PowerPoint and keynote?

I'm not technically savvy enough to understand how this issue could be fixed. I do know that for me the ability to hyperlink was an important feature. Maybe I'm not understanding where and why I have this problem. I though initially that my problem was with Powerpoint but based on what was stated earlier that hyperlinking doesn't work with either Power Point or Keynote then the only common denominator is Logos. I assume that Pc users are able to use this feature with no problem? I don't know I'm just frustrated and confused about how to resolve or work around this issue? [:'(] [8o|]

The problem is definitely with Powerpoint and Keynote in that they don't support proprietary links. Unless they add that support, the problem can't be fixed. Two possible work arounds might be:

    • Logos could change L5 on the mac to support a different link system that PowerPoint and Keynote do support (this would need to be a file-based link, based on command line parameters). This would have severe limitations, as it would only work on the computer on which it was created, and the links would be horrendously long. As a consequence, I very much doubt they'd do it.
    • It should be possible to create a javascript file that acted as an intermediary between Powerpoint and Logos. You would have to manually create a special link in Powerpoint. When you clicked on that link it would load Safari, and then Safari would load Logos. It's quite likely that there would be security issues, and the Mac might simply block it. It might possibly work, but you'd have the hassle of creating the links manually, and the browser would fire everytime you clicked a link. It's probably not worth it.
I'm sorry I can't be more positive. Apple and Microsoft are too big to care, and it's really out of Logos' hands.
