Suggestion: lose the 'flip the page' imitation

In Why Do We Keep Making Ebooks Like Paper Books? Kane Hsieh comments:

There is no reason I need to turn fake pages.

Okay, this is how Kindle books work, and so the Logos apps do too, but why?

Wouldn't it be easier just to keep scrolling (as we do with Logos on PC/Mac)?

Are there technical reasons why this is hard to implement?
Or it it what the majority of readers prefer?
Anyone care to comment on what your preference would be?

This is a feature which many people have asked for - see http://community.logos.com/forums/p/38920/335750.aspx for an example - but I don't remember seeing any commitment from Logos to provide it on Android.

It has been made available in the iOS app which leads me to think it will probably arrive on Android at some time.

Yes, I prefer scrolling over page turning!! This might sound like a small thing to some people, but its HUGE for me. This is one of the reasons why I don't use the Logos app on my phone to read my Bible. I instead open Crossway's free ESV app. It scrolls and it's way faster than the Logos app.

It's interesting how people have different preference for things like this. I MUCH prefer the page turning to the scrolling. The page turning is just a tap, and with apps that I have to scroll, I am constantly scrolling. Also when I scroll, I have to constantly keep track of where the words that I am reading at the moment are when I scroll, When I page turn, the text always stays in the same spot relative to the page.

[N] o no, I can't imagine myself to keep scrolling, my eyes get tired when I see letters moving. I LOVE THIS FEATURE(PAGE TURNING) IN LOGOS. by the way, you can do scrolling with two finger on the screen moving up or down.

I prefer old fashioned page turning but sometimes page turning can be cumbersome. However, in this day and age the best thing is to have them both and use the one that is the most convenient at the time. Unfortunately, the scrolling is not yet available on Android (works fine on IOS though).

In my experience, the current behavior gets very cumbersome when using a synced Bible and study Bible in split-screen view. It's actually very difficult to describe, because the behavior is so inconsistent. I'm going to try, anyway.

Going to the beginning of an epistle by selecting a book and hitting the "Go" button opens my study Bible to the front matter for that book - e.g. Romans. Swiping the Bible to the right shows 1:8 on the left and the study Bible note for 1:8 on the right. Swiping back to the left goes back to the beginning of Romans with the front matter on the right. Navigating to Romans 1:2 because I want to see the study Bible note for that verse doesn't change anything - the front matter is still shown on the right. Using the navigator in the study Bible window opens to the note for 1:2. I suppose I could just swipe to that verse in the study Bible, but there are 11 pages of front matter.

OK - now I have Rom 1:1-7 on the left and the study Bible with v2 at the top of the screen on the right. (The notes for 1:3-4 and part of 1:5 are also displayed. If I want to see the note for 1:6, my mind tells me to swipe the right window to the right. OK - that worked.

Now I swipe the left window to navigate to 1:8ff. In the left window, vv 8-17 are displayed, but the right window hasn't moved at all. The note in the study Bible for 1:8 is there at the very bottom, but goes onto the next page. So I read the first part of the note and swipe the screen. OK so far. For some silly reason, I swipe the study Bible window to the left rather than the Bible itself. Oh boy - that changed the Bible to a different pagination. Verses 5-13 are displayed on the screen - rather than 8-17 as before.

It gets worse! Swiping the Bible to the left shows the end of Acts and the beginning of Romans. My study Bible has opened up to Acts. ARGH!!! I could go on and on, but I've spilled enough digital ink.

Why can't it be as easy as selecting a book, chapter, and verse to open the Bible to that exact spot with that specified verse being the first one displayed on the screen and the study Bible open to that note? And then scrolling vertically (continuous scrolling) should move the synced study Bible verse by verse, along with whichever one is at the top of the left window. Trying to remember whether to scroll the left window or the right one and not knowing what to expect is extremely frustrating.

Thanks for listening - and for a great product, both on the desktop and my Nexus 10 - unless I'm using split-screen :-(

The app you mention only scrolls one chapter at a time - you still need to "page flip" between chapters. When Logos implements scrolling it won't have that limitation, and both page turning and scrolling will be implemented since it's obvious people like one over the other. I've just talked with our dev department and the scrolling feature is in the pipeline for Android.

If you look at the Feedly mobile app, it gives 3 choices for the top level: flip pages by swiping left-right, flip pages by swiping up-down, or scroll. Something for everyone!
