Moody titles will be going away

Mr. Kent,
I just purchased the Silver upgrade and didn't realize it offered the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament published by Moody for $23.95. I forgot to mentioned that to sales, but I don't want to wait for tomorrow because it might be gone, so I went ahead and purchased it for the current price of $49.95 -- Do you think I could get a credit/refund back for the difference? I know it's been done in the past and I know the sales person honored the special prices on some books you offer when you upgrade (I purchased Louw-Nida today at a very discounted price due to me upgrading to silver recently. So I hope it can be done and Logos can give me a credit/refund for the difference. Like I said, when I read this post I checked if I owned the resource and it turns out that I don't and since sales is close (9:30 EST) then I had no choice but to purchase it at regular price before it's too late and it's forever gone!
Thanks for everything and I hope something can be worked out to keep selling Moody titles!

Any Moody's must-have titles before it's too late?
Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament
Someone may have already listed it but there are many good books this is by far the best brief lexicon for quick Hebrew study. Everyone should own this.
-Dan
EDIT-PS: I see others mentioned it, it truly is a little good mine. If anyone is not familiar with it, it is generally seen to be the equivalent for Old Testament that Kittel One Volume is for Greek word study. It is designed for the laymen but I would bet for a busy Pastor it would still have great value.
Just downloaded my copy! Phew!!! I sort of panic a little, but it was still available for purchase.
Thanks for pointing that out! I might even be able to get a credit/refund since I recently did an upgrade.

I, three, sent an email to them. If they get flooded with emails it'll be like a signed petition letter or something and hopefully that'll get them to reconsider. It wouldn't be a wise move on their part.

I suggest everyone do this. It takes one minute.
Thanks for the contact information. I just sent in a nice email to them too asking them to do all they can to try to work something out.

I'm not sure what it will do but it can't hurt. I hope that they will get the message that this development is disappointing to many. I choose to believe that there is always hope.

I also emailed them. Told them I really had a lot of respect for their ministry, that various arms of it have been involved in my discipleship, but that I wasn't going to purchase their titles from another company as that would be too cumbersome, nor would I buy their titles on paper as I can barely afford the moving costs I currently incur. So if they want to keep me as a customer, they MUST keep their books in logos.

Think I own everything Moody that I need. Thankfully there's enough Libronix MacArthur Lifeworks CDs floating around for sale still some people who are late to the party can at least pick up some of the commentaries.

Yes, Mike, you can call Logos with the activation key in the package with the CD-ROM and they will unlock the resource and it will download straight to your Logos account.
I would just caution you to ensure you by the CD-ROM from a reputable source to ensure that the licence key has not been activated before by anyone else.

I will not see the loss of MacArthur as a loss...just my personal opinion...Michael Childs said:The loss of John MacArthur will be huge to Logos.
Of course, it is always personal opinion as to what resources we buy. I respect John MacArthur, though as a Wesleyan and non-dispensationalist, I disagree with him on many things. In fact, about the only thing he writes that I am interested in is his New Testament Commentaries which I already have. (I think he does a great job on the commentaries, and I am not intimidated by the parts of his theology that I disagree with.) So I don't mean it will be a big loss to me, personally.
Yes, Michael, I agree it is a loss for Logos and for Moody, but especially for those that are blessed by Moody products (even MacArthur)...lol! I really was just having a tongue in cheek swipe at MacArthur as his "Charasmatic Chaos" left a bad taste in my mouth many years ago - I read widely from all parts of Christendom, and have a few of MacArthur's books on my shelf, but personally (and I respect that he is held in high regard by many) I'd rather spend my money elsewhere. God bless mate...:)
I mean that John MacArthur is very popular, and a big seller. The loss of his books will hurt Logos, if it cannot be corrected. It will hurt Logos in relationship to rival software which will continue to carry MacArthur's works. Because I care deeply about Logos' future - as well as my investment in Logos resources - I do indeed think the loss of John MacArthur is huge.
I don't mean to be a conspiracy nut, but is it possible that rival software is trying to get exclusive contracts with publishers of some popular resources in order to squeeze Logos out and increase their market share?

MacArthur has 3 different bundles from Libronix years..
1. MacArthur Lifeworks 1.0
2. MacArthur Lifeworks 2.0 (has some books from 1.0)
3. MacArthur Essentials Bible study

Most of these bundles include several publishers, so these may be in a different catagory when and if Moody pulls the pin

There are some individual volumes by John MacArthur that are outside of the John MacArthur Bundle and published by Moody.
Each of these were featured in Round 3 of March Madness. Use code 3MM13 in checkout. These titles are not included in the MacArthur Bundle. Please note; approximately 28 books in ths MacArthur Bundle are published by Moody Press. I assume the departure of Moody will affect the availability or composition of this Bundle.
Actually Matthew none of these were featured in March Madness, so they are unfortunately not available at a discount. However the Macarthur Bundle does not include the Luke 1-5 commentary which is included in March Madness

I’m sorry my original post was vague. In an effort to communicate better with our customers, we wanted to make sure to get a message up before pulling all Moody content from our website.
Now we have additional information on the situation. Our contract with Moody is expiring, and unfortunately we have not been able to agree on new terms. So we will no longer be able to sell Moody content.
We don’t have a firm date yet on when Moody titles will be pulled. We’ll try to give you advanced warning if we can.
If you already own books published by Moody, you will not lose any content; and you’ll continue to get free updates when we fix typos, etc.

That is disappointing to hear. I think that many of us suspected this to be the case but I am saddened none the less.
I previously mentioned in this thread that this makes me nervous for the future. It makes me wonder whether Logos may have contract disputes with other publishers in the future which is not a comforting fact for those of us who have invested a lot in Logos. I guess I just assumed that the resources that Logos offered would increase rather than diminish.

Thank you, Kent. Do you know yet whether this applies to Vyrso books too, or is that a separate contract (with, presumably, better terms from Moody's perspective)? I know Logos doesn't get much for Vyrso books so it would be hard to imagine negotiating an even better deal for Moody on those. I guess Moody no longer sees the benefit of the added value that Logos brings to Logos edition books. That's really a shame.

Wow...this whole thread is a disappointment. Not because Moody is leaving the building...far as I'm concerned, I hope the doors does hit them on the way out. I just don't get the fawning over them...when they are gouging and disrespecting every one of us as Logos customers.
"What's that you say? You're too good to sell your products to me anymore? Hmmmm...well, in that case, let me hyper-extend and give you my kids' lunch money for the rest of the month...and all of next month, too." The Bible says if someone strikes you on one cheek, show them the other...not turn around and write them a big, fat check!
I for one...and I am apparently the ONLY one...won't be buying anything from Moody ever again...PERIOD. Unless they resign with Logos, that is.
As if I don't already have more than I can ever read and five times as much I still would like from dozens of publishers that aren't Moody.
Moody's gone??
Big Deal. I don't think there is a single title from Moody that I own that wasn't part of Portfolio. In other words, I don't have a single Moody title that I purposefully purchased...and I've got over 6500 titles in my library. I've always found them to be a lackluster publisher.

David,
Let's be fair. You don't know anything at all about the negotiation that went on between Moody Press and Logos. It could very well have been Logos that demanded a larger percentage of the profits (we do not know). What we do know is that 100% of all profits that Moody Press makes goes towards helping provide free tuition for all students attending the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. That's 100%. So please calm down since you do not know all the facts. Also if you do not like the books that Moody Press published why so upset?

Personally, few items from the Moody interest me, and while I don't particularly like it when publishers go away, it is not a big deal for me. And, to the best of my knowledge, we have no inside knowledge here about what is going on in those negotiations.
But reading the "tea-leaves" from the way Logos has changed recently, as well as some hints from other publishers - Logos has changed the way they do things from centering on CD's to The Cloud. In the process, Logos has changed from a company providing an electronic book technology that publishers can license to use to support their work into a company that licenses books to publish for their library system.
We Logos users like this because of the convenience of having our books on biblica online, as well as smart phones, etc. But it is a significant change in who does what for the publishers. Is Logos now a partner, or is it turning into an admittedly electronic only, but RIVAL publisher? This would provide more than a fair amount to discuss when contract renewal time comes up.

All this means to me is that Moody recognizes the excellence of Logos Bible Software. Moody is not claiming to have an exclusive corner on the best Logos resources.
Another consideration is it is possible Moody wants to require the purchase of Logos so the students at Moody can qualify for the greatest Academic discount available. That would be an act of kindness not irony.

I'm not sure what is so hard to gather from this...this job posting no doubt follows an established Moody pattern of having a Logos usage requirement, likely expected for both profs and students. The thing that makes this IRONIC is that if Moody continues in this practice, none of their students will be able to purchase any of Moody's own products for their own use in the seminary's own declared and required Bible software of choice.
That has irony dripping from every pore. [:$]
Not that I'm expecting any such individuals to chime in on this thread, but I do wonder how Moody's own faculty, who use are users of Logos software either by choice or requirement, feel about this turn of events. I also wonder how some of the authors feel about it--although I understand they pretty much have no say in the decision unless they have extremely unusual pull. Even having such pull probably wouldn't affect this decision.

This is a slight loss with losing the Moody books... I suspect that by now most people have gotten what they wanted from Moody...I wonder though if you would still be able to purchase the Libronix MacArthur CD and it would still upload to Logos after the agreement ends. Any thoughts? My two pence.
Peace,

Dear David,
Please forgive this long post. As I said before we do not know all the facts. I sense from your posts that you feel that Moody Press is at fault or is being unreasonable. Could it be that Logos is perhaps making unrealistic demands of Moody. Does Logos, because of its size and because their product is required by Moody Seminary of their students, believe that Moody must do whatever it takes to keep the information that they paid to have written in the Logos library? Are they perhaps trying to bully Moody Press? I do not know and neither do you. Because I do not know the facts I am not blaming anyone. I do not want anyone one to come down hard on Logos either. I like the software. In fact, in all likelihood no one is doing anything wrong. As was said in other forums Logos is a business out to make money. That’s OK. If they think that they cannot make enough of a profit (or further their business objectives) with the offer that Moody is proposing than that is their right. If Moody feels that it is not in their best interest to accept the offer that Logos is making, that is their right. Neither company may necessarily be doing anything wrong. So if people would like to continue seeing Moody Press books in Logos I suggest that they not only contact Moody Press but also contact Logos and ask them to reconsider what they are offering Moody. Remember, the resources are being developed by Moody and Logos is negotiating with Moody to use Moody’s products in their library. It is a two-way street. So let’s stop trying to find out who is to blame and pray that God will be glorified by the students that Moody is seeking to train (in both the seminary and the institute) and through all those who are studying and teaching his truth through the use Logos software.

Erwin! Peace to you! Thank you so very kindly for your post to this thread!
I really appreciate it! Every time I speculate about something, I end up being "wrong" anyway! *smile*
As a Lutheran to whom Luther's Small Catechism means a lot .... the 8th commandment with Luther's Meaning (the way we count the 10 commandments -- different than in some denominations) means a lot to me also ....
something negative ..... something positive .....
The Eighth Commandment
You shall not give false testimony against your neighbour.
What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our
neighbour, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him,
and explain everything in the kindest way.
When I was young, many moons ago, the translation for “explain everything in the kindest way” was “to put the best construction on everything”! *smile*
You, Erwin, have done just that! *smile*
Philippians 4: 4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand..........

I almost posted something to this thread yesterday that I ended up deleting...I wish now I had hit post. Is Bob human? Sure...and so he must be fallible, right? Suspect, maybe?
Maybe.
But, you see...Bob has a pretty well-established record of not being a slavish hound for obscene profits and not taking advantage of his customers. CP, for instance. Prepubs, for instance. The monthly Free Book, for instance. A very liberal return policy, for instance. Free FSB, for instance. Do those things help Logos? Sure, obviously...but only because being straight with customers is good business. Is it possible that Bob is trying to turn the screws on Moody? I suppose, if he hit his head getting out of the shower and had one of those bizarre personality changes you occasionally read about...you know, those...very...extremely...rare...occurrences. But I doubt that. For one thing, I seriously doubt Bob thinks he's big enough to suddenly become the neighborhood bully...and since that tactic would definitely not be good for business, I strongly doubt that is the case here.
Nevertheless, Logos is clearly establishing itself as the dominant Bible software company based on its entire stable of offerings. Moody is clearly not going to benefit from distancing itself from Logos. So why do it? I'm sure there is a reason, and no, I don't know what it is exactly. But I think one thing is pretty much perfectly clear--it's a bad outcome...one which isn't a result of unfortunate alignment of the stars but a decision rendered. Moody pocketed some of my money because of the configuration of the Portfolio package Logos offers, money they never would have extracted from me otherwise. How is that bad for them?

Actually, as a universal principle that interpretation is not just suspect, it is potentially life-threatening.
If your "neighbor" is in fact clearly outside YHWH's will, you become a partaker in his sin if you merrily paint over his error. Isa. 41:6, 7 Psa. 79:11-12
We are not commanded to forsake judgment, or judging the behavior of others...we are commanded to forsake rendering final judgment.
Saying nice things about a slanderer and a betrayer is to become both. Isa. 5:20

You are myopic, David. Why can't you see (like Moody does) that having Logos Bible software, even without access to Moody resources, is a good thing that will help in the pursuit of a good education. Proof that Moody doesn't believe they are the only ones who publish good stuff.
