Retired my old HP with Vista and Logos 3. Was still using Logos 3, and would rather continue to use it (can't afford to upgrade to v5 right now). Can I move v3 to my new W8 computer (if I can find my disk)?
Are you telling me that because I already owned Logos 3 I can install it on my new computer and not pay for it again?
Logos5 will have some features that require new datasets that are only available if you purchase a minimal crossgrade or new base package, but you can install the FREE ENGINE and it should allow you to read/search all of your L3 resources that you already own.
Yes. You pay for the resources, such as books, maps, etc. and also some helpful databases that Logos created (which will e.g. allow you to find somebody even if this person is referrred to as "he" or "the king" in the respective verse), but the software engine itself is free.
Having read through many threads on Libronix (Logos3) and Win8, I'd not recommend a Win8 machine for Libronix. Those who have gotten Libronix to work on Win8, usually report limited functionality.
There should be still some Win7 machines available, or machines with Win7 as an option. Performance, even with 64bit versions of Win7 is much better, provided one uses the latest version of Libronix (3.0g), and applies the patch for IE9 (see here for details on that).
Also, while you won't need your discs to install the program, you will find them very, very helpful for installing the resources - unless you can first copy them all to some other media that will allow transferring them to your new system (recommended - BTW this will be easiest if you install everything to their default rather than custom locations).
As others suggested, if you need to go to Win8, then consider the free Logos5 engine, though I don't think you can do everything with the L5 engine that Libronix can do (depending on which Libronix add-ins, etc., you have).
One more thing to consider is that there are rumors in the tech world that Microsoft may release a version of Win8 that will be more user friendly for laptop & desktop computers. So, if you could hold out a little bit, and you need/want to move to an Win8 environment, you may find it worth the wait.
Well, I already bought a Windows 8 computer (a deal kind of jumped out in front of me). So it will be Windows 8. I don't mind upgrading to one of their newer "engines" and I can still use the old computer enough to download the materials I was using. Maybe I'll make it OK.
Thank all.
I've suggested Logos as software to other pastors and students often, this makes me doubly as likely to do that.
Charles, don't know how much you've looked at the options for L5 but the minimal crossgrade gives you a lot for not that much money.
Moving from L3 to L5 may be a bit of a challenge as the interface and what some of the tools are called is changed. There are some good introductory videos you can locate here.
BTW: as long as you synchronize your L3 licenses over the Internet, L5 will recognize the resources you own and offer to download them for you.
Be sure to check back if you have questions.
Since you would be doing a clean install of Libronix onto a new Win8 computer I would say your chances would be good that it would run OK. It ran fine for me on Win 8 when I tried it out (although I currently run Win 7 with IE10 and Libronix still working fine with IE10 installed). Most people who had problems did in-place upgrades from Win 7 to Win 8 (if you call that an upgrade?). Read and see for yourself ... almost everyone who reported problems upgraded an existing Libronix on Win7 Insallation to Win8, with the result that afterwards nothing they did would make it run correctly.
My advice would be to try installing Libronix on the Win8 machine and see how it runs ... Do not install from the script on the website, but instead follow the instructions here which involve downloading an installation file in .ZIP format from the Logos FTP server.
If it does not run correctly, you have lost nothing except 5-10 minutes of time, and you can easily uninstall. As others have stated, you can also upgrade to L5 .. but before you do look through the forum at the performance issues, bugs and crashes that many are experiencing.
Libronix is stable and reliable compared to L5, and is much less of a resource hog. [H]
I run 3 along side 5 on my desktop under windows 8 with no problems. But I prefer 5.
Since you can run both side by side on the same computer, you might think about giving both a try, and seeing what you think.
