I have Libronix 3.0g running on Windows 8

I have Libronix 3.0g running on Windows 8.

I installed it with the intention of finding a solution to all the problems others have reported.

I am unable to duplicate the issues with saving and loading workspaces that others reported.

I am also unable to reproduce the errors in the advanced search window that others have reported.

It runs in both admin or user mode. It runs with or without "Windows XP" compatibility checked.

I have not done extensive testing yet, but so far I do not see any problems.

Here is the process I followed to install:

1) Clean install (brand new computer with 64-bit Windows 8)

2) Installed completely offline. No internet connection. Everything was installed from the .ZIP file at

 ftp://ftp.logos.com/ldls/Zip/LibronixDLS-3.0g.zip

3) Licenses were restored from a license backup file.

4) No online updates were applied. Only the contents of the .ZIP file were installed.

5) No modifications to registry or anything else were made.

It just worked.

So now I am wondering ... why does it work on mine, but others have had problems?

After a bit more testing, I discovered one item that was not working correctly. The Bibliography tool drop down lists were empty.

I then installed the IE9 Registry fix that is available on this forum. The problem was fixed. I delete the registry key, problem was back.

So it seems clear that the registry key is still needed on Windows 8.

I also noticed some sluggishness when processing was going on in one window and I attempted to open another. I found that choosing

"Windows 7" in the compatibility settings worked better than the "Windows XP" settings. I cannot explain why this would be, but it seems

    to perform better that way.

I must conclude after testing for myself that L3 does indeed run on Windows 8. [:D]

In fact it seems to run better than it did on my Windows 7 machine.

The question remains, why did others have problems? I suspect it might be necessary to do a clean install rather than an upgrade to get

the program registered correctly. It is also possible that the setup files contained in the .ZIP file are not identical to the ones that get executed

by running the scripts from the website. Maybe others can shed more light on this. I would really like to see others duplicate my success,

particularly if they had problems previously.

Can you run a Greek Morphological Search?

Does a Bible Search run on the word you type in?

Can you create a Word List?

The zip file contains a slightly cut-down version of the CD/DVD installation; missing only a couple of data sets. One possibility is that MS tweaked its early Enterprise "RTM" release (that I used) for the actual commercial release. Another is that my Virtual Machine did not run Win 8 exactly as a real (host) Windows 8. So I won't know any better until I get a retail Win 8 running on one of my computers.

That's excellent. So MS definitely tweaked things before the real Release[;)]

In another thread, Dave H. reported having upgraded to Windows 8, and he is still experiencing problems with L3.

Dave reported having done an "in place" upgrade from Win7 to Win8.

It is possible that L3 is not going to run correctly unless it is installed "clean" onto Win8. If you plan on doing an in-place upgrade to Win8, I recommend uninstalling L3 beforehand. Then do a clean install from the .ZIP file after Win8 is running.

If you get it running successfully, let us know here. Or if you don't.

In another thread another user has reported success with L3 running on Win8. He also posted pictures: http://community.logos.com/forums/t/59271.aspx

This user also did an in-place upgrade to Win8, so the problems that Dave H. had seem to be unique to Dave. This being said, It is still recommended that those who wish to continue running L3 stick with Win7 or lower. While it does run on Windows 8, there is no guarantee that you will not experience problems, and no support from Logos.

Please post your successes or failures here so others will have a better indication of their chance for success [:D]

I had trouble with L3 a few days ago.  Every time I tried to launch the program it would crash.  Win 8 updated that night and the next morning the program worked fine again.  Still working fine now.

I agree Dave. He did not claim to have done extensive testing on it. Nor did he mention any problems with it.

The only computer I can verify without a doubt that it worked on was my own. Everyone else I accept their statements in good faith.

Bradley says it worked on his. Milford says it works on his. You say it doesnt work on yours.  I believe that all are being truthful and honest.

And I am not recommending that anyone try this ... I do not recommend Windows 8, Logos 4 or Logos 5.

But for those who may be in a situation where they are already stuck with Windows 8, I would like to see more testimony to help them make an informed decision. So far we have very little here, which is probably a good indicator that there just isnt much interest in L3 anymore.

Personally I have an investment in resources, and I plan on using L3 for a long time to come, whether it is supported by Logos or not. I see no benefit in Windows 8 for a desktop or laptop computer. But I also recognize that not everyone is going to be willing to wipe a brand new Windows 8 computer and Install Windows 7 like I did recently.

Sounds like there could be an important clue here. Any idea which updates were installed that night?  On Win7 its under "view update history" in Windows update.

I have just 'upgraded', if you can call it that, to Windows 8 and now my Libronix doesn't work properly.

Everything displays, but I can't do a search as the program will not accept any new search terms. What it will do is carry out the last search I used!

I have tried uninstalling Libronix and using the 'purge' .bat routine as well, plus deleting registry entries for Libronix. Yet when I reinstall it, it still has the old search terms listed AND displays the last desktop I used before I deleted it!

I am most frustrated, especially as Libronix still uses Graecall and Hebraicall fonts, which are compatible with my WordPerfect software, whereas Logos does not. If Logos used those fonts, I'd switch. As it is I don't want to.

    Has anyone any suggestions?

Given that you absolutely do not want to upgrade to Logos4/5 (for compatability with WordPerfect) and also given that you ran the IE9 fix ( http://community.logos.com/forums/t/30926.aspx ), then I'd run Libronix in a VirtualBox. If you got Windows Pro it is probably is free; else there's Microsoft/pay, plus a couple commercial versions.

I'm on Windows7/64 with Libronix issues. I run it in a VirtualBox (along some other older software) and everything is picture perfect. (I also run Logos5 as well).  Just for info the VirtualBox pretty much duplicates an XP environment approximately the time of IE6-ish. Reads CD/DVD drives, internet, etc.

You're sure that those fonts can't be used in Logos4/5? Just to make sure?

If downgrading is not an option, VMWARE Player is a free download and runs Windows XP or 32 bit Win7 really well.

I'm thinking of getting a new drive for the desktop and installing Win 7. Then I can boot between Win 8 (on the existing drive) and Win 7!

Hi DMB. Thanks for your reply. I don't know anything about Virtual Box, but I pick stuff up pretty quickly, so if you can give me a steer that would help.

As to the fonts, they don't show up as options in Logos 4 when I try to copy and paste - that is where they need to be. Is there any way I can just install them?

I've no experience on the font issue other than to set my fonts in the Tools > Program Settings panel (I've a million of them from all the different software projects). But I'm assuming you must be in notes, where I've no Logos4/5 experience as to what happens when there's a font difference. Hopefully someone else might know?

Regarding Virtual Box, it sounds like VMWare above might be a better choice for you if it's free (I've not used it but if you google it, there's a bunch of how-to's). It seems to handle both XP and W7/32 which you might eventually need. Don't know if the MS licenses come with it. Here's a good intro:

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/10911/run-xp-mode-on-windows-7-machines-without-hardware-virtualization/

The one I use literally comes free/licensed with Microsoft Windows Pro (though you may need to download it from MS as I did).

Libronix 3 runs on "some" Windows 8 computers if you follow the installation instructions at the beginning of this thread. It seems that those who do an "upgrade" to Win8 are the ones that have unfixable problems.

Wordperfect is not a good choice for Greek and Hebrew. It has no Unicode support. But if you prefer to keep using it and it meets your needs, all you should have to do is configure Logos 4/5 to use those non-unicode fonts as default fonts. I really cannot tell you whether this will work or not, as i do not use Logos 4/5. Logos 4/5 might require Unicode fonts. Others on the forum can tell you more about this.

How badly do you want to stick with Windows 8? That is a decision that only you can make. Me Personally, I have no use for it and plan on sticking with Win 7 for a long time to come. A clean install of Windows 8 might solve the problems for you with Libronix (and it is always possible that it might not too).

Thanks for the replies. The big problem I have at the moment is I can't seem to do a complete 'uninstall' of Libronix from my computer.

I installed Windows 8 over Windows 7 without uninstalling Libronix first. I now realize that may be behind some of my problems. But although I have uninstalled Libronix AND run the purge routine AND tried deleting any relevant files, folders and even registry entries, whenever I reinstall Libronix using the .zip file, a lot of my old settings come back.

For example, the chief glitch is that I can't enter a new search in the search windows (Basic or Bible). No matter what I enter, it just repeats the last search I did when it was running in Windows 7. So that information is stored SOMEWHERE on my computer and is being retrieved when I reinstall Libronix. But WHERE IS IT?

If anyone can advise, this might help me get Libronix back and working.

On the fonts issue, all my researches tell me this is unresolvable unless either WP starts doing unicode, or Logos reinstalls the patch that allowed you to copy Greek and Hebrew into Graeca or Hebraica.

Thanks to those who have responded.

See here for Libronix folder locations -->  http://www.logos.com/support/windows/L3/special_folders

(Vista has the same folder names as Windows 7/8).

Before you remove them backup your licence as that will make installation much easier. Also I wouldn't remove the folder in (My) Documents

    Thanks for this, Dave.

The good news is I've got rid of the old search results. I changed the file C:\Users\'User'\AppData\Roaming\Libronix DLS\Library\Preferences\LDLS\UserInterface\SearchDialogs.lbxprf to a .bk! file extension and, hey presto, the old search results disappeared.

An important point - and perhaps the heart of my problem, is that there is AppData for ALL users of the computer, even those that don't use Libronix (like my wife). I'm not going to try it tonight, but deleting her folders MAY be something I need to do.

However, bad news - I still can't enter a search item and get Libronix to perform a new search. Any wisdom on this would be greatly appreciated.

    But this is progress!

On 64 bit Windows, 32 bit Programs have their registry calls remapped. So some cleanup utilities or scripts may not work as expected.

    To Libronix it is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Libronix

To Windows and other programs it is: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Libronix

You could always delete this key and see what happens [H]
