    • Dietrich Bonhoeffer: A Biography by Eberhard Bethge

I would love to have Bethge's biography of Bonhoeffer, I think the fact that he was a friend of Bonhoeffer adds a valuable perspective.

The Christology Controversy (Sources of Early Christian Thought series) by Richard Norris

The whole series would be good.  Admittedly I only own the Trinitarian Controversy volume but have heard decent things about the rest of them.

This is timely, as I'm working on a large list for Fortress Press right now.

In that case, and since Fortress is a Lutheran press, will you take any suggestions?[:D] They publish some of rabbi Neusner's, and they use horribly bad glue in their paperbacks. If the books are a couple of years old, they fall to pieces as soon as you open them.[:(]

The most asked for are the Tosefta and A Rabbi Talks with Jesus, but I doubt either of those are Fortress. In fact, I can't figure out which ones are. Fortress themselves only list the five that are in print, and Amazon... well, the the guy seems to publish about a book a month, so there are a few to check out... And the Fortress title I have by him doesn't show up at all. Perhaps you could get a complete list from Fortress, and we could tell you what we want?

Fortunately that won't be a problem with the Logos editions. [;)]

You can do an Advanced Search on Amazon and search for books by Jacob Neusner that are published by Fortress. Here's the list I came up with (asterisk marks those books available in Kindle):

    • *Judaism in the Beginning of Christianity
    • *A Short History of Judaism
    • Messiah in Context: Israel's History and Destiny in Formative Judaism
    • Torah: From Scroll to Symbol in Formative Judaism
    • Recovering Judaism
    • Rabbinic Judaism: Structure and System
    • Fortress Introduction to American Judaism: What the Books Say, What the Pople Do
    • Symbol and Theology in Early Judaism
    • Midrash in Context: Exegesis in Formative Judaism
    • What Is Midrash?
    • The Incarnation of God: The Character of Divinity in Formative Judaism
    • Judaism in the Matrix of Christianity
    • A Midrash Reader
    • The Talmud: A Close Encounter
    • Writing With Scripture: The Authority and Uses of the Hebrew Bible in the Torah of Formative Judaism
    • *Jewish-Christian Debates (with Bruce Chilton)
    • *Soundings in the Religion of Jesus: Perspectives and Methods in Jewish and Christian Scholarship (edited by Neuser, Anthony Le Donne and Bruce Chilton) -- [an aside: cool! Anthony Le Donne was a fellow student with me at Regent College; I didn't know he'd gone on to publish books with the likes of Neusner, and several of his own]
    • The Social World of Formative Christianity and Judaism: Essays in Tribute to Howard Clarke Kee (edited by Neusner and others)
    • Judaic Perspectives on Ancient Israel (edited by Neusner, Baruch A. Levine and Ernest S. Frerichs)

I'll add Neusner's works to my list.

Thanks, Gabe. What about my list by other authors from my post above? I know some of those are probably out of print and maybe Fortress doesn't even own the rights to them anymore, but they'd all be books I would like to see in Logos if possible. Whatever ones you're able to secure the rights to. Thanks!

Gentle people, please stop it. It is wrong to tempt someone. Now stop tempting me. Look at all the good stuff on the background to the Judeo-Christian faith. Siggghhhhh. If only my wallet would cooperate.

I'm going through a massive list so I don't target works we already have in collections, but I don't think there'll be a problem getting any of those, so long as there aren't rights issues.

I was just trying to get the Lutheran side discussing potential resources ... I had to be fair having helped Anglicans and Orthodox.[:(]

Here are some more for your list, Gabe. I'd forgotten to include titles that were published by Augsburg before it became part of Augsburg Fortress (and which are now mostly listed on Amazon as coming from Augsburg Fortress Press):

    • Thirsty for God by Bradley P. Holt (a classic on spirituality that was recommended reading for incoming students when I started at Regent College)
    • Christian Caregiving: A Way of Life by Kenneth C. Haugk (was used as part of the training for a lay counseling ministry I was part of at my church)
    • Diary of an Old Soul by George MacDonald (a devotional book of poems, one for each day of the year) - now published by a variety of POD publishers so it's probably out of copyright
    • How to Keep a Spiritual Journal by Ronald Klug
    • A Prayerbook for Spiritual Friends by Madeleine L'Engle and Luci Shaw
    • The Joy of Discovery in Bible Study by Oletta Wald
    • Prayer by O. Hallesby (a wonderful little classic on deepening your prayer life)
    • Being Well When We're Ill: Wholeness and Hope in Spite of Infirmity by Marva Dawn (Marva Dawn can speak with authority on this subject, as she's lived with a number serious illnesses and disabilities for many years)
    • Grieving the Death of a Pet by Betty Carmack
    • 40-Day Journey with Gerard Manley Hopkins edited by Francis X. McAloon
    • Spirited Women: Encountering the First Women Believers by Mary Ellen Ashcroft

If an Aussie can make a humble suggestion, well, two...two of my favourite books are published by Fortress Press, and both are edited by James H. Charlesworth...they are "Hillel and Jesus" and "The Messiah".

But they are so attractive. The silver lining is that Logos is on a fast track to fulfilling my dream of "Having Every Thing Ever Written or Spoken in Religion, Formatted for Logos Bible Software".

    Exactly.

You can do an Advanced Search on Amazon and search for books by Jacob Neusner that are published by Fortress.

I should have known there was an advanced search somewhere, though I can't say I can find it even now.

Here's the list I came up with

    Thanks, Rosie.

    What most interests me is:

    • Translations (Tosefta, Midrash Rabbah...) -- but those are from other publishers.
    • Introductions to Jewish literature -- some on that list.
    • Christianity related titles -- some on that list.

If an Aussie can make a humble suggestion, well, two...two of my favourite books are published by Fortress Press, and both are edited by James H. Charlesworth...they are "Hillel and Jesus" and "The Messiah".

Now, that also looks very tempting. And Charlesworth will sell, little doubt about that.

In general: if it deals with both Judaism and Christianity at the same time, I'm probably [more or less] interested.

They hide it pretty well, but I've bookmarked it because it's the only way I ever search for books on Amazon anymore. To find it, hover over Books (1) on the left menu on the Amazon home page, then click Books (2) on the side menu that comes up.

Once you're on the main Books page, you'll find Advanced Search in tiny font among the links below the search box:

You could say that again! There's no way I would have found that except by mere chance. I don't think I've ever been to the main 'Books' page. Thanks.
