CD not recognized

Hi,
I purchased more than a decade ago the Logos Scholars Library and also the Word Biblical Commentary, they have all ran well on my computers over this time. I recently upgraded my operating system to Windows 8 Pro running on my 64/32 bit system. When running Windows XP these programs ran well, however now neither of my CD's run on this operating system. I get these messages with Logos Scholars Library "This app cant run on your PC" and with the Word Biblical Commentary " To find a version for your PC check with the software publisher"
Now these programs again ran well on this computer before so it seems to me that Windows 8 cant recognize these programs. Is there anything i can do as these programs in their day cost a significant amount to purchase.

You are trying to run the old Logos 2.x program which is incompatible with today's 64/32 bit machines. Windows XP was 32 bit but also ran your 16 bit Logos 2. As you appear to have no compatible machine the best way to resolve this is to contact Logos Support. If you don't have Serial Nos for your CD's they will require some proof of ownership before they will update your licences. Then you will have to accept a free upgrade to Logos 5 in order to use the resources!

To clarify Dave's message, Logos has consistently updated it's software over the years, and released the updates for free. So you can use your Logos 2 books with the current Logos 5 software.

To take advantage of this, you need to install Logos 5 on your Windows 8 PC from www.logos.com/installation, and sign in with your Logos ID. If you don't already have a Logos ID, you can create one here.

Then, you need to make sure that Logos knows that your ID matches with the purchases you have previously made. That happened automatically when people updated to Logos 3 from Logos 2, but it may not have happened for you. If it has happened already, your previous purchases will automatically download into Logos 5. If that hasn't happened automatically, you will need to contact Logos customer services with your serial numbers and your Logos account ID.

I see that others have already recommended that you upgrade to Logos 5.

That is one of your options.

But if you (like me) prefer to stick with the Older Libronix software, it is still possible. There are a few reasons to stick with the older program. For one, the new program is a huge resource hog that crashes a lot. Still a lot of bugs, as you can easily see just by looking in the Logos 5 section of the forum here.

On Windows 8, new installations seem to work for some people. Others, especially those who did in-place upgrades to Windows 8, have problems.

1) Get L3 running on your new Windows 8 computer. To do this, follow the instructions in this thread. You will have to backup / restore Resource files, or download them from the Logos ftp site.

2) Run L3 in a Windows XP Virtual Machine. I recommend the free VMware player. You will need a license to run Windows XP and it will have to be activated inside the VM. If you do this, do not upgrade the browser inside the virtual machine higher than version 8.

There are "a lot of bugs" posted on the forums, because it's a place for people to get help when they have problems (so there's a tiny bit of selection bias going on). Although every now and then someone will post a thread about how they're not having any problems and are feeling a little left out, e.g., http://community.logos.com/forums/t/72966.aspx

And even though there are bugs, they're getting fixed (e.g., see the "Bug Fixes" in the latest Release Notes: http://wiki.logos.com/Logos_5.1). This is not true for Libronix, which has known incompatibilities with Windows 7 and Windows 8, and will never be fixed.

I would not recommend installing Libronix on a new computer and learning the UI of an obsolete program. (If you're going to stick with old software, you could create a 32-bit Windows XP VM that can run LLS 2.x and keep using what you know.) Overall, I would recommend getting your licenses transferred to Logos 5, which is frequently being updated with new features, improvements, and bug fixes.

I currently run Libronix 3.0 on Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 10 installed. It runs perfectly. I have also had it running correctly on Windows 8.

I just wanted the OP to know he has a choice. If he has been using it for years, he would not be learning a new UI.

For me, L3 will be obsolete when *I* decide not to use it anymore. I recognize that it is no longer officially supported, but I don't need support.

As far as L5 bugs go, it is obvious that progress is being made, but there are still beta level issues that are not resolved. All L5 users are essentially functioning as volunteer beta testers. Maybe one day I will try it out again [:D]

Does LibSys.exe shut down cleanly when you exit LDLS? On Windows 7 and 8, it usually doesn't, which prevents new licenses from being installed properly. (As shown by recent threads about deleting the Licenses folder, etc.)

If you don't have that problem, that's great. However, many Windows 7 and 8 users do. (I don't know why.)

My understanding of the OP is that he was upgrading from LLS 2.x. If that is the situation, his choice (without using a VM to keep running it) is learning Libronix 3 or learning Logos 5. As a member of the Logos 5 development team, I recommend Logos 5. [:)]

Yes I have had LibSys.exe fail to terminate properly before. It does not seem to happen unless you close the program while it is still processing or searching. In any case, I know how to kill it in task manager. And I rarely, almost never, add new licenses. I have to admit I added one recently, but that was a rare event [H]

Keep up the good work on Logos 5. I may want to upgrade someday [Y]
