I'm shocked, too, but frankly I find the translation just as appalling. Stripped of churchy language but spoken in a language no one on earth speaks. Wow. I guess is is a very hard task to accomplish, eh?

You must not have read much Luther, then. Luther used that word quite frequently. It's been discussed before on the forums, in a conversation started by the squeaky clean Mark Barnes (read on from there through the first six posts of the next page of that thread).

Also check out Josh 15:18 and Jdg 1:14 in the New English Bible. (Thanks to elnwood and the article elnwood linked to for this information.)

I have been in communication with Gordon Tisher, the author of the book, who has seen our thread. I'm now very ashamed of how my third post turned the thread quite ridiculous.

Actually, the post by George that I was replying to was a challenge which Gordon would be glad to answer himself. He said to me, " if you or anyone else on the forums would like to ask questions about my lexical or syntactical choices, I'd be happy to answer." I set a bad example by making fun of something someone had put his heart and soul into, and it's a good lesson to me, and us all, that the person we're subjecting to ridicule online might be watching. So be cautious. It's fine to make critiques and disagree with an idea, but we should do it charitably and in an adult fashion. My turning George's critique of the translation into a thread about fart jokes was not very grown up nor respectful. So I publicly apologize to Gordon (if he's still reading) and encourage people to take up any concerns about the translation with him directly.

Actually I bought the Kindle version. $1! Thanks to Logos (yea!), I can go through Mark and highlight the 'interesting' translations without looking back and forth. I've taken the attitude that the semantic choices are serious (academically based; not like the Georgia translation). Most oddities I can see the reasoning. Some I SUSPECT are coming from a presumed culture that's being picked from other sources. I'd assume amulets, etc.

Overall, I like the preservation of the story-telling syntax. I don't like Kindle's missing chapters (no TOC). Missing verse numbers are stylistic.

One might disagree with wording choices but I noticed a LOT more detail. I think the title's misleading? We need more translations like this.

If the author's amenable, I'd like to hear more about his sourcing thinking.
