Uh-oh - no footnotes in iWork Pages?

When copying from Logos to Pages I get no footnote citations as before Mavericks and new Pages update. Anybody else seeing the same thing and found a work around? Thanks.

Personally, I have never used the citation-in-footnote feature, but the method I do use might be an acceptable workaround for some.
My workaround/method is this: when you paste from Logos as plain text, it adds the citation immediately after the quote. For example:
It is a beautiful thing to grow old gracefully, to manifest more of Jesus from day to day. Our blessed Head is the One from whom we draw all our supplies for spiritual upbuilding
H. A. Ironside, In the Heavenlies : Practical Expository Addresses on the Epistle to the Ephesians. (Neptune, NJ: Loizeaux Brothers, 1937), 204.
Now, to get it to paste as plain text, you need a third party app. Typically, a clipboard manager will do the trick. I use Launchbar, but others like Flycut (free in the Mac App Store) will also work. Just copy from Logos then paste as plain text from the third-party app.
After pasting, you then would have to select and copy the citation, then paste it into a document endnote (I don’t think Pages 5.0 has footnotes any longer).

I don't use Pages (I use Word 2011), however, a Mavericks update to Pages, Keynote, and Numbers is free from the Mac App store. Have you tried updating Pages to see if that resolves the problem?

If the new Pages isn't working out, you can still use the old one—the update adds the new version, but doesn't replace the old. It can be found under the "iWork '09" folder under Applications.

The Pages forums are full of posts about the problems or missing features in Pages 5.
The solution is to move back to Pages 09

The Pages 5.0 debacle has caused me think about sermon manuscript storage. What would be the best format to use to store sermon manuscripts for long-term storage and retrieval? pdf, doc???
What are your thoughts?
Thanks

It depends upon what you want to do with those files in the future. PDF's are great for maintaining formatting and archival purposes... but will you want to edit the document later? A Word document (you should be using .docx, not .doc) will likely have a long future, and you'll be able to edit it. Pages isn't bad, and <I think> is getting better... but we will have to see what happens to the program in the near future. It is possible that these features will be added back in.
As much as I don't really like MSFT Word, it is often the best solution... especially if you want to make personal books in Logos (which uses the .docx file format). By the way, a NEW feature of pages is the exportation of .docx. I haven't tried it yet for personal books, so I reserve judgment on its usefulness.

I am having the same problem with the footnotes copying into Pages 5.0, and it couldn't have come at a worse time...
But thankfully, by reverting back to Pages '09 I can finish my paper. Thanks for the suggestion, and I hope this issue will be addressed soon.

Nowadays, you can pick any number of formats, and be fairly safe. RTF is a tagged text based format that will always have wide support. Then there are ODT, and DOCX, both of which are XML-in-ZIP formats. With any of these, even in a worse-case scenario, you will still be able to unzip them and get at a tagged-text version of your document.
I use, and adore, Mellel. It's native format, .mellel, is livewise an XML-in-ZIP format. So even though it is a rather proprietary format, I never have to worry about locking the content of my documents away irretrievably.

Ahhhh... Pages 5 does (obviously) support footnotes.

I've checked myself, and the work fine.
It could just as easily be said that the problem is Logos 5 [:|] however to be fair to the Logos guys they likely were not able to get their hands on the new version of Pages in advance. We trust they will speedily update Logos to work with the 'new order' that is Pages 5.

My point wasn't to assign blame, but rather to point out the obvious: The OP was previously using the old version of pages and upgraded to the new version, which prevented the problem. In that sense, "the update IS the problem." [:)]
I have been waiting for a significant update to pages for a while. I am very glad for .docx support. Hopefully, I will be able to slowly ween myself from word.

Martin, I am very interested in Mellel. I have owned it for a couple of years but have yet to make the switch. I have tinkered with it a few times. However, the learning curve has not seemed worth it until the new Pages downgrade. So, I am going to move over to Mellel.
I am not completely sure what "XML-in-ZIP format" means. But, I am interested to know. Does that in anyway mean that Mellel docs are able to be opened by another program (i.e. Word)? Or is it something more complex than that?

Pages 5.0 does indeed support footnotes; however, the format they use to store/retrieve that information from the pasteboard when using copy/paste has changed. The old APXL format which was used by Pages 09 is no longer supported and the new (seemingly) internal format does not appear to have any documentation available. Until Apple provides documentation on this new format, we likely will not be able to support footnotes from Logos.

Thanks for the clarification... hopefully Apple will release that soon. Have you tried contacting them about the issue? Do you need Tim's cell phone number? [:O]

Pages 5.0 supports footnotes, but I believe they changed the way the program handles them. This was a reasonable change to make the format work with both iWork in the Cloud and the iOS version. Logos will probably need to change the way footnotes are coded in the copy/paste function; but more than likely, it is a simple fix.

Erik, take a look two posts above your own for an analysis of the problem from Martin Potter, a Logos employee.

Yes, and even if you install the new Pages, the old Pages will still be in your applications folder in the folder named, "iWork 09."
However, if you open a Pages document in the new Pages app, it will be automatically converted to the new Pages format and you will not be able to open it in the old Pages app (you can convert it back to the old format by exporting the document as "Pages 09" in the new app).
Clear? [;)]

I'll gladly accept if you have it [;)] although I suspect Tim might try and put a restraining order on me ringing him with endless comments and suggestions [H] - wouldn't be enforceable in Europe I would suspect.

Apple can be a bit naughty in that regard, part of their culture of keeping things close to their chest. I think in this case they didn't want to let the cat out of the bag about the major changes to the iWork suite. I trust they will now though do the right thing and give developers like Logos the necessary information. If they don't you should get the Logos community behind you in pressuring them.

From what I see the iWork suite has had a total rewrite, it's not an upgrade. Obviously one of the goals was interop between OS X, iOS and iCloud versions. This means there has been a reset, and in some areas a reduction, of the functionality which will have to come back - something like what happened with Final Cut Pro X. Looking at the big picture Apple did provide the new versions free, and the old versions are still installed and working.

Great suggestions, another great mac app for writing is called Scrivener.

Until Pages has been updated, one thing I have found as a workaround to this is to manual insert the footnotes. You can get the appropriate information by clicking the "i" (Info) on the Logos resource you have opened -- the scroll down to Citation and then click "Copy". You can then copy that into a manually inserted footnote. For the page number, you can select the option under the resource pull down to show the page numbers. So, it's a little more of a pain, but not too terrible when you get the hang of it.

As mentioned by several, this has to do with the update of Pages. There are essentially two workarounds. The first is to go back to the old iWork. Apple did not erase my old iWork program, but simply put it in a folder under applications called "iWord". The second it to copy and paste the paragraph or article into another program like Scrivner. Then, copy and paste it into Pages. That appears to work for me.

I believe the folder should be named "iWorks 09." I did a fresh install and no longer have that folder.

need manifest jesus by fixing this problem in logos where it does not copy and paste , its dear stuff , the cheap stuff does it , just to copy and paste passages of scripture , this problem is gone on for ages , will logos fix it , any way round getting it sorted ,

the problem is logos mate not pages , as it does not copy and paste in lots of updated apps when everything is updated on mac , it needs some good old fashion graft and get it fixed , forget clever talk , if the cheap free bible apps can do it , then is it a big thing for a £1000.000 to do it , come on

It is frustrating that Faithlife still seem to be stuck in the Microsoft mentality - docx files for personal books - copy and paste only working for 'Word'.
I guess that the reason this doesn't get more attention on the forum is because the work round only requires one extra keypress Cmd+V.
However the promise of a 'Built for the Mac from the ground up' programme seems to be as far away as ever from fulfilment.
