Indexer crashed on merge index.

I typed Merge index in the command box and after a bit the indexer crashed.

Thomas,
This is mentioned in the Notes on Beta4 release.
Bradley Grainger said:Logos 4.0a Beta 4 (v4.0.1.3.4141) will be released shortly.
Known Issues
- Opening a LSF/LIX resource will crash the application.
- There may still be bugs in index merging that cause a crash when searching the library by rank.
Bug Fixes
Just thought this might be useful.

Thanks Steve. Consider my bug discovered. :-)

I just purchased todays Christmas special and when it updated it indexed for about an hour. I thought this was the automatic merge index. After completion I thought I would search on the new resource and see the results. Here is what I get: As you can see it appears that the index merged, but still maintained the supplemental index as well. Still some bugs for sure. I will reindex tonight.

If the indexing you experienced was automatic it wasn't merging, it was building the supplemental index. An automatic merge won't happen until the supplemental index is I think 25% of the main index size.

That's what you get when you put coffee in it. It's only 30 minutes with hot chocolate! [:)]
It looks like you've found another bug!
I'll put it on the Bug report.
Thanks,
Chris

Better check the http://www.12daysoflogos.com/ page Chris, they've moved from mugs to dictionaries now. [;)]Chris Elford said:That's what you get when you put coffee in it. It's only 30 minutes with hot chocolate!

When I looked this morning at my email, there was a "carryover" of mugs because they'd been so popular yesterday they sold out [B]???

Thomas, can you un-smack yourself because the error occurred during the index merge. I understood the Rel Notes to mean errors may occur during a Search after index merging!

I too bought today's book (really great book). L4 created the supplemental index and everything worked as documented - that is, search showed up in supplemental results. I ran the "merge index" command and it kicked off the indexer. I shut down the software and waited for it to finish. Took about 20 minutes. I restarted the software and now the book doesn't show up in my searches:

Does it show up in your library?
If not, you may need to rebuild your index (type rebuild index in the command bar). This can take some time - as you probably know.

Richard,
Yup, the DTIB shows up in my Library (That's how I opened it up in my screen shot). Also, the book was automatically added to my Dictionary collection and it is in my prioritized list.
I rebuilt the index last night from scratch (renamed the LibraryIndex directory method). It is now finding words.
However, when there is an entry for an exact word, it doesn't show up in the "Topic" tab of the search results, like the other dictionaries do. That's interesting because I was pretty sure it did last night.
Hmmmm.....

The topic tab reflects the results of a headword search in about 7 dictionaries that Logos utilise. You can gets results in your other dictionaries by using left and right arrow keys on one of the resources in that tab.

Dave,
You did very well not to have any note of frustration in that response - except maybe the bold. Topic search is to Dave and Handouts are to Thomas!

Hey Dave,
I'm still trying to understand this all, but check out this screen.
I searched my entire library and only found four entries for Justification and I know the DTIB has an entry for that. Shouldn't it have shown up?
So, maybe this is an indexing bug or I still don't understand the Topic feature (I hope it's me!) BTW, I have the DTIB as top dictionary in my prefered list, with ISBE, Eerdmans and the New Bible Dictionary, in that order. So it is using the prefered book list.
I'll use the "Rebuild Index" Command and see if it's any happier in the morning.

It means that you have 4 of Logos' preferred dictionaries for Topics - this section has nothing to do with your Prioritized resources! Open one of them and use the right arrow key to find other dictionaries with that topic, including DTIB.
See http://community.logos.com/forums/p/6936/54641.aspx for more information.

Thanks Dave, that solves the topics puzzle.
Back to the original trouble: In my first screen shot, you can see that the system didn't search the DTIB for 'hermeneutics' after an index merge. Now that I've completed a 'rebuild index', running the same test I'm getting the full results.
Thanks

Bradley, can you comment concerning Steve Sando's and John Fidel's issues after a merge? Are we still quite a way from having a reliable index merge?

Our analysis suggests that this is most likely caused by index corruption introduced by merging in Beta 2. While Beta 4 can merge two indexes correctly, it requires those indexes to be error-free; if you are merging an index that was created as the result of merging in Beta 2, it would probably crash Beta 4. This can be solved by entering "rebuild index" to force a reindex. Beta 5 will also attempt to detect this corruption and automatically reindex everything from scratch.

Steve's issue is probably the same as http://community.logos.com/forums/t/7419.aspx, which will be fixed in the next build.
John's issue is most likely a known problem (which won't be fixed in the next build). If the "Library Results" section is set to search "By Book", it can (and will) display results from the supplemental index. The "New Resources" section should hide itself in this case, but it doesn't because it doesn't know the ordering method of the "Library Results" section. (If John expands Library Results and sets it to "By Rank", the hits for DTIB will disappear.

No... do you have a lot of LSF resources? Beta 4 couldn't read those, so it also couldn't index them. You may need to reindex to integrate the LSF books back into the library index.

Steve,
I posted a reasonably definitive explanation of the topic searching in Logos 4 on another thread.
This is my personal Faithlife account. On 1 March 2022, I started working for Faithlife, and have a new 'official' user account. Posts on this account shouldn't be taken as official Faithlife views!

I rebuilt the index under beta 4 and have had no problems. However, I have not merged indexes since.

I have a few, but not many. The time difference could just as well be my computer, come to think of it this was the first time I just reindexed overnight.Bradley Grainger said:No... do you have a lot of LSF resources? I purchased today's Christmas special, opened Logos 4 and it downloaded the new book and the 4.0a. The program restarted to install the program, which interrupted the indexing for the new book, restarted and began indexing. Normally I close L4 while it indexes, but when I did the indexing stopped and the icon at in the task bar was gone. I now have the new book, but searching in it is incomplete, ie zero results for Mary, Luke etc. Obviously the supplemental merger is not working correctly. I suppose I will rebuild the index tonight. This problem seems to happen with every new purchase.
If any additional information is required, let me know before I rebuild.
Disregard above post.
