Seiss - The Baptist System Examined, 2nd Edition
Joseph Augustus Seiss is a Lutheran figure who is often known more by non-Lutherans than by Lutherans, where he is known for his writings on the book of Revelation (published by Logos), on Pyramids, or the "Gospel in the Stars"... But he was also a coworker with Charles Porterfield Krauth in the formation of the General Council, and in general returning the Lutheran Church to her roots.
It is the later aspect of Seiss's thought that is largely expressed in this work. It was originally written as a series of articles for the Lutheran Observer in 1854 against a book by Richard Fuller. As with almost all polemical writing, its purpose is as much to convince "your" flock as to convince the "opponent". These articles were then published in book form later in the year. Four years later an updated edition came out, and most of the copies of it on Internet Archive were of the 2nd edition...
In many ways the discussion is quite dated, since we are almost in a different world in the study of New Testament Greek. Some of the statements are a bit overblown (eg. from the beginning "He avows himself “a Baptist on principle, and not in sectarianism nor bigotry;” that is, he claims to be an exception to Baptists generally, who, if we are to take the implications of his own avowal, are both sectarian and bigoted." (pg 10-11)
