Which Dictionary Are You All Using?
I've decided to take the plunge and invest in a good bible dictionary.Most of the SDA thread and even in the general thread post I've read, frequently recommend the Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary (6 vols.) and The IVP Bible Dictionary Series (8 vol.) Which one would you all recommend and why? I can't get both.

I do not have the Ivp Series, but I would definitely go with that one of the two, because of the specialization of the different eras.

The IVP series is great and highly recommended. It is a unique "specialty" dictionary series. Each volume focuses on a particular limited section of scripture. It does not replace any other dictionary. I use it constantly.
You should be comparing ISBE and AYBD as comparable series. There are some other threads that discuss these and give comparative articles for review. I have both. ISBE has been more consistently helpful for me thus far.
I waited for each of these to go on sale before buying. At some point they will be on sale.

Peace, Eugene! I have AYBD and really truly appreciate it! It IS complete! Very scholarly!
Then, to go with that ... I strongly recommend a freebie, of all things ........... The Lexham Bible Dictionary! It's absolutely exquisite, just not as long yet or as detailed yet as the Anchor Yale; however, in some respects, it's better!!! And, it's getting longer every week as Logos continues to develop it!

Also, free is the FaithLife Study Bible Notes which are quite excellent and can be linked with any Bible you have purchased ,,,
It's great .......... advertised as three levels of notes, and so it is, eh?! *smile*

My apologies for responding with my first post ... I didn't pay enough attention and didn't realise I was responding in a denominational forum ...
So, I apologise and also change my mind ...
I stand by the free Lexham Bible Dictionary; but for the other one I now recommend The IVP Bible Dictionary Series which would not be quite as "liberal" as the AYBD..\ Finally, I apologise for using a "label" to describe the AYBD; however, it seems to be so, eh?!

AYBD remains the gold standard for Bible dictionaries.

Anchor will give you a much border look, the IVP are narrow dictionaries but what they cover may often be more in-depth than Anchor. And while I personally would recommend Anchor over NIDB, I feel I would be remiss if I didn't suggest you look at it. I still feel Anchor is better but NIDB has it;s fans and I will admit it is a very fine dictionary, I would expect it to ship by June at the latest, maybe even as soon as May. New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible (5 vols.)

the Standard remains Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary (6 vols.)
An old one: International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (ISBE) (1979–1995) (4 vols.)
A simple one: Eerdmans Dictionary of the Bible
a nice one for indepth-study: The IVP Bible Dictionary Series (8 vols.) (see also The Essential IVP Reference Collection Version 3)

Don't forget Lexham Bible Dictionary. Pretty good, up to date, and it is free. Did I mention constantly being updated.
