Beware Latest Release 22/5

Being the trusting sort, I always load Logos iOS apps on my iPod first (Bible!) and if it looks ok, then allow the 4 apps on my iPad.

Today Apple released the iPhone version (always later than the iPad) and I installed it. Then it started using my cellular gigs to do something. It was only tonight I noticed it had downloaded a bunch of resources that might have been on my iPod maybe 6 months ago? Certainly if ever loaded, deleted long ago.

Anyway I went to my account, and deleted the offending iPod (which duplicated the non-offending iPod). That seemed to make the Logos5 happy (e.g. accurate). But going back to the iPod, he was still busily downloading after I deleted him from memory. That's a big no-no. So I deleted him completely off the iPod. The process was continueing to download at least according to the spinning wheel at the top.

So I did a hard reset on the iPod. Done. Logos gone. I don't plan to update the iPad; I hate to see what it'll download. I'd hope it's what's ID'd in the Logos5 library.

Hey Denise,

Can you tell me a little bit about your wifi/cellular setup? Since you're using an iPod Touch, which doesn't have cellular data access (only wifi), I assume you're routing your cellular data through some sort of wifi access point, or creating a hotspot. The issue is that the iPod can't tell that it's using cellular data...it thinks it's on wifi.

Currently the apps are designed to automatically start various resource downloads while on wifi. There are a couple different reasons we might download things automatically...let me know if you fall into any of these categories:

Marking a resource for download in Logos 5 will start the download on your device automatically the next time your device connects to wifi
Manually downloading a resource on your device adds a setting to your account to automatically re-download that resource to that device if you ever uninstall and reinstall the app. The idea is that if something goes wrong with your app and you need to reinstall, you won't have to go find all your downloaded resources and re-download them.
In the FSB, we automatically download the Faithlife Study Bible resource and some other related resources, since that app is designed to make heavy use of those resources and it's a rather poor user experience to use the app when they aren't downloaded.

Now, I'm not saying the way things work now is perfect...I'm just trying to take some of the mystery out of it.

From what I understand, you would like the apps to never download resources without you giving explicit permission (tapping a confirmation button in the app, etc). Is this correct? I can't promise we'll make the change, but I wanted to confirm what you're requesting so I can bring it up for discussion.

In response to your questions (and I may accidentally miss or not answer; my apologies):

- Yes, the iPod is going through a hotspot. So are our iPads, Nexus7 (forgot the name), PC, etc. The hotspot's running everything. Indeed even though the iPad has cellular ability, it's turned off.

- The surprise download I think was due to the account having two iPods, even though there is only 1. And I'm guessing (don't know) that the duplicate 'woke up' with the older resources by having being edited as the old one? At the time I didn't see the mouseover delete device on Logos.com. Yesterday, I deleted both iPod devices.

My concerns:

- The Logos.com account seems (emphasis 'seems') to allow for multiple same-device instances (and so one being very old). And it determines the current one by editing it? Not by using it.

- I can't imagine what Logos5 is doing with multiple instances of a device (e.g. when you click on a resource to assign it to a device)

- I don't think it's safe to assume 'cellular' is not wifi (or visa versa). I don't have any issues with my other 100+ apps on managing with a hotspot. Only Logos? I'm taking your word that you distinguish cellular/wifi.

- When I deleted Bible! from memory (double-click the button and slide out), it SHOULD have stopped communicating (like my other apps).

- And when I literally deleted the app from the device, again it SHOULD have stopped communication (never saw that before; I thought Apple prohibited it). It should not have required a hard re-start.

Overall, I hope you guys don't do your 'we're in control' thing. We keep tight rein on internet access, not only for cellular charges (indeed!) but for security as well. Any app that starts communicating without user control gets deleted. No matter its value. We just don't take chances.

The iOS apps rely on a device identifier from Apple. iOS 7 changed the API for the identifier and it's now possible that a reinstall on the same device could result in a duplicate device being registered on Logos.com.

Appreciate the heads up.

But you realize from a user point of view, that's not good news (you're saying that you can't tell the device ID?).

And if one re-installs, one risks creating multiple instances that Logos5 doesn't identify? And thense download?

Just trying to clarify.
