Lag time when turning pages while reading on my iPad mini
I tried to search for this topic and didn't find anything. Perhaps I am not using the correct words.
Over this past week I read 8 books while I was not connected to the internet. While reading on my iPad mini I was often frustrated with the responsiveness in turning pages as I often had to wait several seconds for the page to turn after I swiped with my finger. Has anyone else experienced this frustrating behaviour?

- I don't have a mini, but I think that is unrelated. (which model?)
- I HAVE experienced this, but it has been more than a year (maybe two)
- It would be helpful to have more info:
What book? How many highlights/notes are attached to the resource? Have you killed the app? Killed other apps? Done a full restart of the device?

I should have thought of restarting. I've had that situations many times in the computing world and should know this. [:$] I will try it to see if that helps.
I did have a few other apps running but I have since quit them.
It was pretty much happening with most books I was reading. After restarting I tried them again and that seemed to help.
I will have to remember this in the future.

I thought I would re-post about this again since I continues to happen even after I restarted.
It is frustrating waiting for the text to catch up as I read.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?

I've had a time when I was unable to open the app on my mini, and the cause was another app that was stealing memory.

I don't think this is not my issue since I close all other programs when I use Logos.

The app I had issues with was suppose to be closed, but it still caused trouble. I had to restore backup to fix it.

So how do you tell if an app is causing a problem when it is closed?

Try 2 finger scrolling rather than page turning. I find that works better for my on my iPad 3rd generation.

Thanks for the suggestion Dan. I'm still experiencing lag even when I use 2 finger scrolling. It doesn't happen all the time but enough to be annoying and sometimes quite frustrating.

I get this issue all the time and have not found a way to fix it. And yes, it is very frustrating, this is one of the reasons when I get the prompt in the app "Do you love Logos" or something to that effect, I feel very strongly that "No" as it is dog slow.
I keep hoping that the speed will improve, but after so long, I am starting to lose hope.

Thanks for letting me know that someone else is having the same issues. I too hope it gets fixed soon.
Okay, I just did a test to let everyone know what exactly I am experiencing. I am reading the Vyrso book "Move: What 1,000 Churches Reveal about Spiritual Growth". I tested chapter 15 and below I've recorded the number of seconds I had to wait when trying to turn each page. Note how inconsistent it is. I even try to swipe early but it is hard to guess how long it will take. In this particular chapter it became worse as I progressed through it.
0,1,0,0,0 after 2 swipes, 0,2, 0 after 2 swipes, 0,5,3,2,0,0,3,5,2,5,8,5,9,5,5,5,2,9
To clarify, I am using a fairly new ipad mini with 32 GB memory and no other programs are running. I also restarted it soon before the test.
Suggestions welcome.

Suggestions welcome.
it seems you skipped over some of my original questions. Let's start with your notes/highlights. Do these resources have any notes/highlights? If so, how large is the note file? In l5, pretend to print the note file. How many pages? What about a resource without any notes/highlights. Same experience?

To be honest I use Olivetree or Accordance for that reason.... but sometimes you are wanting your resources you have in Logos.

Sorry Alabama, I missed that when resurrecting this thread.

Yes, there are about 40 highlights in this book and no written notes.
In l5, pretend to print the note file. How many pages?
2 pages
What about a resource without any notes/highlights. Same experience?
I tried three other books that didn't have any notes. Some pages turned immediately but most had 2-3 second delays and several times I had to swipe more than once to get it to move to the next page but it was snappier than those with notes. Even this is frustrating although not as frustrating as when I use highlights.
Please tell me you are not saying that Logos may be affected by a few notes! I really want to take notes on my books and the reason why I got the iPad in the first place was to be able to do this easily.

Nope. Not saying that at all. I am saying that if you have LARGE note files, it causes problems... Even if there are only a few highlights/notes in that resource. I just did a quick check in a book I am currently reading. I have 80 highlights in 4 chapters. I expect to have 5 times that and don't anticipate any problems. When logos FIRST moved to highlights=notes! I had severe problems with the app. I decided to move to resource specific note files, and haven't had any problems since.
Did you say which mini you have? Is this a first gen? I have a 3rd gen iPad (so old-ish)

Actually, after reading posts where you spoke about this on the forums I made sure all of my files were "resource specific" so I don't have any large files.

Yes I have an iPad mini with retina display A1489 - 32GB that I purchased in late 2013.
I'm glad to hear that you don't have any problems with yours but I'm still not seeing what my issue may be. [:(]

I don't own the resource you listed. Similar results with all other resources?
Yes, pretty much all of them that I have used recently.
How much free space on your device?
14.6 GB

Thanks for trying alabama. I appreciate all your suggestions.
Does Logos monitor this forum so that they know there is an issue or is there a way of reporting or problem solving this with them?

This situation has caused me to think what could be causing it. Here are the options that I'm pondering at this point:
- There is an issue with my particular iPad mini. But I doubt this is the case since I don't have any other issues with any other app other than the Logos app.
- There is an issue with the latest version of Apple software I am using. I have 7.1.2 (11D257)
- There is an app running or something running in the background that is causing the issue. I have closed all the apps and started again but there may be an issue. Note that this is happening when I'm reading offline so it isn't from receiving "notifications" from other apps.
- I have downloaded too many Logos volumes on my iPad and that impacts it somehow. I currently have 80 because I used it offline so much but I don't think this should affect anything as long as there is still lots of memory available in the device.
- The Logos app is not fast enough. I am suspicious that this is the case. The lagging gets worse the faster that I read or if I skim read. If I wait 20 seconds after turning a page to turn the next page there is no lag but this makes reading quite frustrating and skimming next to impossible since I can read most pages faster than 20 seconds.

I don't recommend downloading large amounts of resources... but 80 isn't much.

Do you have the text set to REALLY LARGE? Are you a speed reader?

My eyes are not as good as they used to be but the text is not REALLY LARGE. I have the text set exactly to the middle of the scale. By the way, what setting is your text?
Depending on the content of the material I do read quite quickly. Actually, on another note, a book that I really appreciated is called "How to Read Slowly" by James Sire which basically says that reading speed should be determined by the content of what you are reading. For instance, if it is the Bible I have to work at slowing down so that I can really take in what is being said, but if it is the newspaper I pretty much just skim it. Other material is somewhere on that scale.

That's good to know. So Graham or alabama, is your response time "instant"? Do you have any lag at all?

slow page turns like Bruce describes? 5 seconds? 9 seconds? I don't experience this. If you do, what are your note files like?
Slow performance over all, and if you do anything requiring Logos servers even on an LTE network, it takes longer and feels frustrating compared to the instant results in the other programs. I noticed it the other day especially when I was hoping into Verbum mobile from accordance mobile. I was reading a commentary and was being referred to an Anchor commentary which I own in Logos and which was saved on the iPad. Times like that are when you really notice how sluggish Logos feels. By no means is Logos mobile unusable just not ideal in speed.

Pretty close to instant. Enough that I don't think about it!
I've just tried it on a couple of resources - one local to my device and one not downloaded.
Then I started swiping through some pages:
- On the local resource most of the time it is instant - the page is replaced by the time I have finished swiping - sometimes their is a sub-second delay
- On the remote resource again most of the time it is instant. Sometimes there is a slight delay which I assume is when Logos is downloading another portion of text. Still no more than a second if that

Yes, network latency can be an issue (my tests above were on a wireless network) but I think what Bruce is describing is just lag issues when reading a downloaded resource. In his original post he referred to doing this when offline so network factors don't seem to be the issue in his case
