BUG: Screencasts of weird highlighting/text selection others have posted about

So I've been having the same ongoing highlighting/text selection problem that others have had. I do NOT have Smart Text Selection on. In fact, when I turned it on to try to see if that alleviated the problem, it did not. I never post on the forums and I've never done a screencast before, but this problem is to the point where I can't use Logos without it occurring regularly and disrupting my work. I even lost a note trying to undo it the first time it happened--very frustrating.

I'm not sure if it never happens when the interlinear is turned off because I almost always have it on, but testing it for the screencast I could not get it to do the bug when the interlinear was off. As others have said, when you select a word/phrase, the ending point then becomes the starting point for the highlight/text selection which then goes for many paragraphs.

Here are two short screencasts:

http://screencast-o-matic.com/u/n5g5/logos6-highlighting-bug-2

http://screencast-o-matic.com/u/n5g5/logos6-highlighting-bug-3

Hopefully this can be quickly fixed. Thanks!

    Welcome Matthew.

    A couple of things:

    1. It might be good to have more info (OS, App version, specific steps to reproduce, etc.)
    2. The devs might need logs. See my signature line about logging.

I noticed that you have a VERY wide screen, with two columns. Does this appear with columns set to "one"? "None"?

    OSX 10.9.5, MacBook 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

    Logos Bible Software 6.0b SR-1
    6.0.2.0064

    Scholar's Library (JG) (JG)

As seen in the videos, when I attempt to select a word or phrase with the intention of highlighting, it sometimes selects multiple paragraphs starting at the end of my intended selection, but does not select the word/phrase I intended.

    I'll try to log it.

I use a 13 inch MacBook and simply open Logos to fill the screen as with any other program, maybe it seems wider on the screencast. I'm simply trying to maximize the amount of verses that fit on the screen and set it to two columns as if I were reading a printed book/bible. I haven't tried it with one or no columns because this is how I prefer to read/study, but I can give it a try for the sake of seeing if I can replicate the bug.

    Thanks for the help!

Ok, I was able to easily and quickly replicate it exactly like on the screencast, and I logged it (not sure what to do with the log).  In Numbers 3:38ff, in the Lexham English Bible (along with the other tabs you can see open in the screencast), and with the interlinear on--I first select verse 39 'Those encamped before the tabernacle to the east' and that works fine. I then click off of that and try to select 'sanctuary.' When I do this, instead of selecting 'sanctuary,' it instead selects multiple paragraphs starting immediately after 'sanctuary.' However, after getting the bug to happen the first try after quitting and restarting Logos to log it, I could not then repeat it. To be clear, it happens frequently but not every single time I select a word/phrase. And it happens where ever I happen to be reading, not just in this passage.

I logged it (not sure what to do with the log)

Follow the instruction in "step 4," (except you don't need to create a new thread, just post the log in this thread).

Diner was just called... I will try to replicate later tonight.

I tried to reproduce, but could not. Out of curiosity: What resources are in "link set a"? What happens if you turn off ALL link sets? Can you still reproduce?

I took a quick look at your logs, but I am not an expert log reader. Good job posting them though. At this point, I <think> the answer lies with your linksets, but that is just a guess.

It's a text comparison of other Bible versions. Here's a screen shot:

I'm closing all the other tabs and trying to replicate the bug.

I closed all tabs except one and even set the link set to none just for good measure. I then attempted to replicate the bug, with the interlinear on like it is when I read/study. After maybe 5-7 minutes of selecting words/phrases without a bug, it just did it again at Numbers 4:12 while selecting 'take' in the Lexham English Bible. It usually hangs for a second (I get the Apple spinning wheel), then it jumped the selection past my word 'take.' Here is the log:

    8561.LogosLogs.hopemusicacademy.20150122-190855.zip

Then I spent another ~10 minutes and got another one. It happened trying to select 'supervision' in Num 4:16. Here is the log:

    7242.LogosLogs.hopemusicacademy.20150122-194653.zip

    Here are some screen shots:

As you can see, this time it selected from Num 4:16 all the way to Num 5:15.

Really Weird. I assume you are using the build in trackpad?

Sometimes the built in trackpad, sometimes a mouse. Same results either way. The screencasts from earlier were using a mouse, the the last two this evening were with the trackpad.

I have replicated something similar, but I am unsure if it is what you are seeing (it looks identical, but my steps seem a little different).

    1. If I use my normal method of highlighting text (click, drag, release), I have NEVER seen this behavior.
    2. If I double click on a word while the reverse interlinear is turned on, I sometimes get the same behavior:

Note: this technique also opens a dictionary. It doesn't sound like that is what you are quite experiencing...

Actually, this does happen to me occasionally as well, although I hadn't intended to double click. But you have to click on a word in order to make it move to that word in the interlinear, and then if you want to highlight it you have to click on it again to start the selection process from the beginning of the word.

    Hey Matthew.

I created a new thread in the beta forum. I don't know if I replicated your issue or not, but hopefully we can get someone to take a look.

Thank you VERY much!!! Maybe the way I read/study with the interlinear is unique, but that is how I use it and do not want to have to change the way I read and take notes because of a bug.

alabama24 has been VERY helpful and responsive in attempting to solve this problem, but it would be nice to know that someone at Faithlife has at least read this thread and is aware of the bug and is passing it on to the appropriate person or team to fix it. Please acknowledge. Thanks!!

I see that you linked to this thread from another thread describing an issue that looks to be the same problem. As I stated there, I have implemented a fix that will ship in an upcoming release. Once that ships, please let me know if this issue is still occurring and I will be happy to investigate it further. Thanks!

I have been having the same problems for a few weeks now.  Worst part is when you go to highlight a word and press the hot button for a colour code and as you press the button the selection changes to the rest of the paragraph and the one after, and it unhighlights the word you selected and goes to the next one and all succeeding for quite a while. Then you have to go back delete all highlighting in the next 2 paragraphs, because Control Z (undo) does nothing.  Uggh. If the update mentioned below is going to solve it, I sure can't wait. But I am having the same problems as Mathew but not in the interlinear, but any book I open. Sometimes we just have to be very patient after selecting a word because the program thinks it is time for a tea break and goes off for a while into a "not responding" mode and then it comes out of it a while later and decides if it heard what you said before to it. One other related problem.  When you go to highlight a section of text, it only lets you highlight the first word and then opens a dictionary to tell you what that word meant.  Not really interested in its meaning, just want to highlight a section of text.

I realise much of this is in this thread, but just wanted to add that the folk here are not the only ones.  I have been struggling to describe the symptoms and reproduce so have not reported up to now. Just seeing what the others have said has helped.  Enough.  Thanks.

This happens when you double-click on a word (and is the intended functionality for double-click). If this is happening when you single-click and drag, please start a new thread to report the issue so we can properly track it. Thank you!

Chris, this is happening with a single-click and drag, it's part of the same bug as I mentioned earlier in this thread. When you attempt to select a word/phrase, sometimes you get just the inverse long selection following the word/phrase you intended, and sometimes you get the same thing in addition to the dictionary being opened in a new tab. When you close the dictionary tab, you're still left with the inverse selection going on for many paragraphs. It happens much less frequently than just the inversion alone, but it has happened to me several times. They are not two separate bugs in my opinion as in no instance was I trying to double click on the word/phrase, but simply trying to select.

For clarification: Your issue is ONLY when the reverse interlinear is turned on, right? Alan says that he has problems in other resources but NOT bibles.

Yes, as far as I can replicate. My interlinear is always on, so except for the 10-15 minutes I turned it off to try and replicate the bug, I am always working with the interlinear on, and therefore, not really sure if the bug happens with it off.

I was not as tight with my explanation earlier as I could have been.  I am getting it in books and in Bibles.  It is a consistent problem in my resources.  I am single clicking but it behaves like I have double clicked. So that is two problems which I also believe are interrelated as neither of them was happening a number of weeks ago.  In other words, one of the fixes or updates to Logos 6 has created the problem as it was not happening in earlier versions of Logos 6.  I will try to get screen shots when it happens next, if I can remember how to get screen shots.  Thanks for all the input. We will solve it, its just a matter of when.

To confirm what Alan is saying, this bug was not happening for me until recently. It was not happening in Logos 5 or when I initially upgraded to Logos 6 or for the several updates after. One of the fairly recent updates seems to be the culprit.

I just remembered a Saturday morning when both these problems stuck in my memory as first taking place. Jan 17th. It may have happened before but that is first one I remember. So it was an update released before the 16th in the Pacific Time zone that introduced the bug. Hope that helps track it down. Will work on screen shots later.

6.0b SR-2 downloaded this morning my time, you are still in evening. Indexing completed.

I just had my first enjoyable session with a mouse in Logos in since the 17th. The double click issues seem gone - no opening word definitions when I single clicked a word.  Also when in an open book (didn't get to try it on the Bible yet) I highlighted a group of words, it didn't think for me and disagree with me, or suddenly decide I meant a different group of words.

I am not declaring the problem to be over, but this is at least a positive development.  It may well be with more testing that I can confirm it is over or that I find some other issues still continuing.  So far so good.

More info. Definitely the problem is solved in the books other than the Bible I have used so far today.  However it is still happening in the Bible. I am using NKJV if that makes a difference.  Below I highlighted "a wedding" and within one second it decided I didn't want that and got the rest of the text after the words I had selected.

Interesting. I am in a book and as I read suddenly the wierd behaviour has started again.  Not sure if it is this book or just this section in the book. When I try to highlight something, the program ignores me or jumps somewhere else in the section not near my mouse pointer, or ignores the first part of a section as I drag and click and then suddenly comes to life highlighing when it feels like it. The screen below just suddenly decided I was interested in "and" when I was passing over the word on my way to the top of the paragraph. Unstable is the best word I can find to describe this.

Does this "unstable" behaviour stop if you turn off the "Links to open panels" visual filter in all resources?
