Highlighting and Notes

Upgraded to Logos 6 Crossgrade yesterday from Logos 5. i highlight a ton of things in my NIV84 on my Mac, but am having trouble this morning selecting just a portion of text; ie: i want to choose "bread from heaven" from Exodus 16:4 and add a note linking it to Matthew 6:11 and some other verses, along with my personal observation; what God's been teaching me. i'm only able to highlight "down bread from heaven" and i don't know what that is. i'm also struggling to highlight a little further down in Exodus 16 "In this way … follow my instructions." so i can change my highlighting but when i slide my cursor across the text i do select that text, although it takes several attempts; the selection process seems extremely sensitive. But when i release my mouse, it selects a whole lot more!

i knew some things would change with the upgrade. This one, i don't understand how it works; and i love being able to highlight my Bible and add notes. i know i'll learn more as i get deeper into Logos 6. The same is true as i read my Bible each morning, and that's where i want to spend the majority of my time: reading my Bible, not figuring out what's changed or what i'm doing wrong with this highlighting. Would appreciate some help and insight.

    Welcome to the forums.  [:)]

In the Tools Menu, Program Settings, set Smart Text Selection to "No".

That was easy! [:)] But now that i'm able to select just "bread from heaven" how do i add my highlight? When i select the text, then choose the highlight i've set up in the Highlighting panel, nothing happens. In Logos 5, that's all it took. Here it seems i've selected the Highlighting panel.

Click the highlighting style you want to apply after you select the text.  You can also assign a "shortcut key" to the style and just press that after you select the text.

I see from your screenshot that you have several shortcut keys assigned already - E for emphasis, M for Daily Bread, etc.

It sounds like perhaps you have the note file turned off for that resource. Click on the "three circles" icon in your resource and make sure your note file has a checkmark.

To "Click the highlight" worked in Logos 5. It's not working for me in Logos 6. However, the keyboard shortcut does. And i'll check out the link you posted later this afternoon. Thanks! Steve. Alabama24, the "three circles" icon in the "resource" – you're referring to my Bible "window panel" ( i want to make sure i understand your terminology :) i found that ( top of the panel, between the // and the search magnifier ) and checked the note file, but still can't simply "click" the highlight i want. Appreciate the help! Will do some more research when i get a chance. i absolutely love my Logos Bible Software :) blessings –

I can "click" to highlight in Windows and it will show in the resource irrespective of the Note file being checked, and irrespective of the style having a keyboard shortcut.

If you remove the shortcut will "click" perform the highlighting?

For clarification: My theory was that the note document was hidden in the users NIV resource. The "three circles" icon is the visual filter menu for that resource. You can turn note documents on or off. If a user has the default behavior (highlight notes go into a note document named for the highlighter pallet), I would assume that creating a highlight using a style from a pallet whose note document is turned off (gosh that was a mouthful) would result in a highlight/note being created but not shown. The other possible behavior would be for the note document to be automatically turned on when that pallet is used. Personally, I think the default behavior is stupid so I would need to change things on my system to double check...

From Randal's update post, it doesn't sound like a hidden note document is the problem... Perhaps it is a bug. I will see if I can reproduce. It might be good for you to try restarting your computer to see if the aberrant behavior persists.

I just created a new pallet and can confirm that creating a new note when the note document is turned off, turns on the note document... so my theory is pot. [:s]

I could not reproduce this behavior. What version of L6 are you using?

i know how the Highlighting is supposed to work now ( thanks, Steve, for the link; and that's how i was linking in Logos 5 ) but sometimes Logos 6.0b SR-1 6.0.20064 ( alabama24 ) just doesn't do that. i was RE-highlighting ( updating for me ) the word "folly" this morning from Proverbs 26.5; erasing the highlighting that i had to attach a new highlight. My cursor selection is extremely sensitive ( i had already chosen "No" for "Smart Text Selection" ); i highlighted or at least intended to highlight just the word "folly"; clicked Erase and found that my cursor had slipped off of the word "folly" and i erased my highlighting for several verses below. Frustration 1. When i finally was able to select just the word "folly" – and triple-checked that that was the only word i had selected – then i clicked on the "W/f: iv-veh-leth(222)" selection in my highlight menu which did nothing. i had to rename that specific highlight to "F" ( for Fool! :) ) to get it to work, but that changed my original "F" shortcut from my intended, general "foolishness" to this specific word, which is not what i want. Frustration 2. And now i've spent the last half-hour plus setting up this new message rather than simply reading this morning, which was not how i wanted to start this morning or any subsequent mornings to follow. Frustration 3. i get ( "understand," in part... ) God's discipline and i get ( "suffer":) ) God's discipline ( that's what got me into Logos a few years back ) but i could use some help in figuring out what's changed from Logos 5 that i'm not "getting". blessings – Randy

Sorry to butt in but have you considered adjusting the cursor sensitivity for your computer in device settings? Or is there a reason that you generally like it very sensitive?

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Not a "butt in"... Appreciate the input. Except... nothing's changed, other than upgrading from Logos 5 to Logos 6 Crossover ( on my Mac ) so that shouldn't be an adjustment i need to make. It worked fine – as set – in Logos 5 and if i were to change it "universally" for Logos 6, it would also effect all of my other software; Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator, Dreamweaver ( i'm a graphic designer ), as little Word as i can get away with :) And what's happening is not so much the "speed" of the curser; if i were to highlight "so that shouldn't be an adjustment" from the beginning of this paragraph, what Logos 6 is doing – when i release the mouse – is selecting "i need to make" ... on down the end of at least the visible page. What i don't understand is why it's doing that?? And why, sometimes though not always, selecting text in a paragraph, and then clicking on a highlight from my highlight menu ( rather than using a keyboard shortcut ) does nothing?? It will move that blue "active" bar or whatever it is at the top of my "active" Bible window and make the Highlight menu active. i don't remember it doing that in Logos 5 either.

This sounds like the same issue that was reported here: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/99348.aspx. As mentioned there, I have implemented a fix for the issue. Please follow that thread for updates on when the fix will ship publicly. Thank you.
