Need help understanding new collections method
I was trying to recreate a few of my old useful collections; English bibles, Favorite Commentaries, etc.
I selected that the match be "bible" and 600 resources came up! Any resource that was remotely connected with "bible" came up.
That would be fine IF I could choose the whole library and drag it to the "minus these resourses" side, but it was limiting me to "one by one" and that aint gonna cut it.
Can someone clue me in on how to just make a collection of "English bibles" easily?

By default, searching through the library searches all information about your resources (and gives the broadest possible match). However, all the information is also categorised by field (roughly corresponding to the Type, Title, Author, etc. columns you can see in the Details view). You can use the (completely undocumented) field syntax to narrow your search. For example, to list only English Bibles, search for:
type:Bible lang:English
There are other combinations you can perform, such as "type:Commentary author:(Wiersbe, Zuck)" (e.g., to find commentaries by your favourite authors) or "(subject:prayer OR mytag:prayer) AND rating:>=4" (e.g., to find all books with a Library of Congress subject including "prayer", PLUS all books you've tagged in My Library with the tag "prayer", AS LONG AS those books have been rated highly in My Library by clicking the stars).
We hope to have full documentation of all the search syntax available soon.
BTW, if you do see an out of place resource after running the filter (e.g., my system shows the LXX in my English Bibles list), it's an error in that resource's description of itself; we already have it on our list to go through the library and clean that up before release.

Bradley,
Thanks for the reply. I had very similar concerns about collections. However what I wanted to do was include all books except Bibles. When searching for a Bible reference is does me no good to flood my results Bible results. Is there a way to get the list to shall all books if the filter is not displayed?
also, did you get any sleep this weekend? :-)

Philip,
After playing around with this a bit it seems pretty cool.
You can choose any of the "things" that are found in the columns; author, type, rating, publisher, subject...etc.
you could:
1. Make a collection of everything in your library
2. make a collection of "all bibles"
3. make another collection called "all except bibles" and drop the "all bibles" collection in the "-minus this" column.
that would do what you want.

I know this seems stupid and I havn't spent a lot of time trying it but how do you make a collection of everything in your library?

Philip,
I had to do it the hard way; there seems to be no wildcard like * or something.
I did this:
start with resources matching:
type:bible
that was everything in my library
then I excluded some collections; Carro targums, bibles, and Text of the earliest GNT...etc.

One option I can think of would be to start with "rating:>=0". Bradley would know for sure if there is a better way.0 -
I have to admit, I really thought this would be easier. the ratings worked. But then It listed all 1600+ of my resources. But then when I tried CTL + A and then dragging all the resources up to the "drop here" section. It only dragged one selection at a time. Maybe other people would try this a different way but this seems like the most intuitive way to me.

Ahh...never mind, I read through the help file which became available to me today. Now I understand how it works.

Philip,
that's why I went to the method I did....I thought it would be just as easy as:
1.) Exclude all
2.) Drag a few resources back to the "+ side"
alas, it's not.
Todd, yes, the "o" rating works...that is unless you've rated things already...

There is no need do the drop here step. All of the resources in the bottom are what is currently in the collection. So, if you saw 1600 resources then there were 1600 resources in your collection.
In this example I have 299 resources in my collection.

thats the beauty of the <=0 setting. every book with a rating of 0 or greater, which is every possible resource, is returned by the filter.

But what if you do want to drag & drop? For instance, I set the filter to author:"Piper, John" but wanted to exclude the three volumes with his sermons, which required manual drag and drop. Not that big a deal with three, but would prefer not to do one at a time.
Later I will be making a collection of favorite systematic theology books. A filter will get me started but I'll be dragging everything into the "Plus these resources" section since a filter will not be accurate enough. Once I choose everything I want I'll be removing any filter from the collection. But when I set up the collection I would really prefer to move a few at a time rather than one at a time.0 -
I agree. My thoughts are ctrl+click for multi click whenever possible and the ability to drag all of them unless only one choice where you are dragging it to is possible. The option would never or rarely get in the way of those who are not familiar with it usually being an option.

Trying to make my own English Bible collection and found these instructions. Thanks.
However, there are some "out of place" resources in my library...
I used type:Bible lang:English as instructed and found ...
... oh there's got to be an easier way than typing these out ... just have to open each to copy the resource info...

Might be "old hat" by now, but all resources except bibles is:-
rating:>=0 -type:bible

Dave,
I noticed that more than bibles are "bible types" at least that's what I thought...I'll have to recheck...
