Attrition of Adult Children of Seventh-day Adventist Clergy

Martin's Doctoral Dissertation as to why Pastors children leave the church. As a Pastor this is definitely something that I would be interested in reading.

Among his findings:

The strongest predictor of future faithfulness as an adult is whether the PK during growing up years takes initiative to approach a clergy parent to discuss spiritual matters.
There is no greater cause of attrition than attempting to shield children from knowledge of, or to resist discussion about, church or denominational conflict.
While parental conservatism regarding lifestyle standards is not statistically significant in attrition, legalism in teaching or practicing those principles is a major negative factor.

I do not believe this is limited to SDA. Unfortunately, the present generation is dropping out in record numbers. We can probably learn a lot from Martin Weber.

Thank you, Lynden. I've been told by researchers that attrition principles in my data reflect attrition studies of the general church population--so far as they apply. Parsonages are unique places for children to develop their faith, so this study has particular application to pastors.

Remember that most if not all these studies are of the victims of attrition. My study focuses on parents and the church environment in which they were raised. Specifically: what type of parents and church environments are more likely to develop children of retention vs. attrition. The Baptist seminary for which I conducted this study said that along with unique SDA factors there were many common factors that apply to clergy homes in general.
