Reading Books Offline

Apple has approved version 1.2, which supports limited offline reading. For some reason they've done this while we're not at work... so, I'll work on a better tutorial tomorrow morning. Till then, here is the quick "my wife is waiting on me to start the movie" version:

First, make sure you're connected to the internet via wifi or your carrier.

Second, open your library.

Third, click on the blue arrow next to the title you want to read offline.

Fourth, click the "Available Offline" option to on.

Fifth, Click "done"

Sixth, You should see an orange arrow indicating that Logos is downloading the resource.

Once the resource is completely downloaded, it will give you a confirmation message.

After the book is completely downloaded, it will be viewable in your library offline

Like I said, this is just a quick demo of how to get your books onto your iPod or iPhone for offline viewing. I'll try to get a better demo up tomorrow.

This is weird, I just checked for app updates on both iphone and ipod touch; as well as itunes. And all my apps are up to date...no Logos app update available.

Wonder if Apple pulled it for whatever reason.

I checked on my iPhone as soon as I saw Bob announce it. Didn't show an update, but store showed 1.2 as current version. About 3 minutes later it was there. Might just take time to have the update show in iTunes or iPhone...

    Anthony,

And all my apps are up to date..

I've seen apps take a while to propagate to various areas of the world.  I wonder if Apple has staged roll outs in the US also to ease the burden on their servers?

    Linden,

I think you are right; if others have it, then I should be seeing it soon enough.

    Hi Ryan,

Apple has approved version 1.2, which supports limited offline reading

Can you quantify what limited means?  Some of the books I really want to read offline don't have that option available while others offer the option.  Is this a licensing issue or a temporary software limitation or both?

I used the term "limited" because you have to manually choose what titles you want to have access to offline. Also, I'm not sure all the offline functionality you'll  have offline.

As for certain titles not being available with the offline toggle, I'm not aware of that. What are some titles you don't have the option for?

HCSB doesn't give me the option for offline usage. Ditto for the NLT, NASB.  ESV works though.

You can read and navigate books in offline mode, but you can't search them or access them in reports like the Passage Guide, Bible Word Study, and Text Comparison.

WOW!! That is a huge drawback.

Okay, downloaded the new app, set my Systematic Theology to be available offline. I now have no books in my library, when I search, I get no results, in my reading menu there are no recent books, and my library seems empty. Hoping there is an easy fix for this. By the way, Thank you guys for all you do!!!!!

John take a look at this thread, we are having the same problem http://community.logos.com/forums/t/8183.aspx

    Hi;
Same problem here: downloaded the ESV Bible and a couple of other books and on the next launch, an error message welcomes me saying something like "Logos couldn't load the book." My library is completely empty and no searches available.
Tried logging out, uninstalling, resetting, etc and still the same.
    Please help!!
    Thanks.

I've updated my original post. Most likely, the reason people aren't seeing a title in offline mode is because they didn't allow for the resource to complete downloading. Wait until you receive your confirmation message that the resource has downloaded entirely. After that, you should see it in your library in offline mode.

In “Offline Mode,” what “portions of the application will not operate properly until network connectivity is restored?”

As well, are BHS (including morphology), NA27 (including morphology), BDAG, and HALOT available for the iPod Touch and off-line?

    Thanks for your help. [:)]

    Ryan,

I've got the no books problem like everyone else along with the warnings about being unable to download resources (the warnings only happened late last night before the library became empty).  However, when I was initially getting into the error state, all of my books that had successfully downloaded had three to four plane icons stacked on them.  Could you update the tutorial to explain what that means?

    Linden

I believe that the issues everyone experienced overnight have been resolved.

Ryan, I still cannot download the NASB.  The select is still grayed out.  On the other hand, everything else is working fine, and more than justified my purchase of the iPod Touch, it works wonderfully.

    Thanks,

    DP

If one would like to purchase the iPod Touch and use Logos on it, but mainly access resources/books off-line, what would the minimum recommended hard-drive space be (e.g., 8, 16, 32, or 64 GB)?

But what does 'offline' mean in this case? It appears that I still access it through the Logos app, which means I am online, right? Why not an offline Logos app? Maybe I just don't get it.

The iphone app seems to access books in two ways. The default way is to go online and download or cache a little of the book for your to read. Now, as a result of this update, there is also a way to tell the app to download the book by using the method stated above. Once said book is marked in the library with an airplain it is available even if your iphone is in airplane mode or if your ipod touch does not have wireless access.

I think the reason for this is that the library available is massive. If you have a large collection as some do, you may have 3,000 books available. I personally don't want a number of the books on  my iphone. I just want some bible translations and commentaries and other references and the two or three books I am reading to be available all the time.

To me, "offline" in this context means that I can access the entire resource/book on the iPod Touch (after having downloaded it from the Internet or uploaded it from my computer) without being connected to the Internet via WiFi or any other means.

Here's a weird-enough one. I can't get any modules to be downloadable. I've gone through a dozen at least--all the ones mentioned here. :-(

Could it be that I'm in Poland? Could it be my jailbroken phone? (I got gyped on a purchase--said it was a factory unlock, but it was sim-locked... In the end, rather than fight over it, I just jail-broke it to use it on my network)

    -Jon

First let me say that online this is an incredible app. It is great to be able to read resources offline, and like Kevin, I do not think I would want to have my entire library offline. However, I would like to be able to search, use the Passage Guide etc to go from Bible text to these other tools for the resources that I do have offline. Otherwise it is just a reader when offline. Better, but not yet the best.

Thanks for all the work and developments. This is such a cool app.

My experience so far has been somewhat patchy.  Some sources have downloaded well (Lenski books, Concordia Trig English, ESV), others have lead to the program crashing (BHS, TDNT, BDB Enhanced).

Also, none of the Spanish Bibles currently are working for download (where is the Reina Valera?  I'm pretty sure that is no longer under copyright.)

I'm thankful for the offline access of what I have been able to download, hopefully the bugs get ironed out so that all of the books may be downloaded smoothly.

Once that is the case, and the NIV (and NVI) is added to the Ipod capabilities.  I will be heading straight to Itunes to give it my 5 star rating.

Haven't been able to download any books for offline viewing on my 3Gs. Have tried over wifi, 3G, and EDGE. It's really starting to bum me out. All I get is a greyed-out button regardless of what book I want. If I could just get ESV and a couple of the commentaries . . . but, Alas!

Hope a solution comes soon. Thanks for the app, though. It's got a lot of potential.

I'm having the same problem but am using a brand new iPod Touch...any help would be appreciated...

I presume you've both updated to the latest version in the App Store?

I presume you've both updated to the latest version in the App Store?

Yep, have even uninstalled and reinstalled on the iPod touch using iTunes...still the buttons are all greyed out, they're there but there's not functionality...

I am having the same issue also.  I just bought a 3G Ipod touch 36 Gig and it will not download any books to use offline.  Every time I turn offline on, within about 15 - 20 seconds I get kicked out of the Logos app.  This sounds like the problem a few other people have posted here.  Maybe it is related to the latest version.  I got the Ipod touch mainly to use the Logos 4 program on the go.  I am sure they will resolve the issue eventually.  Until then I am glad that at the Church I attend they have wifi.

    Ryan,

The tutorial is great; with it, I was able to download several books to my ipod. Unforterately, several of the books downloaded the wrong title. How do I delete them from ipod? Thanks for the assistance.

    Lynn,

Just click on the blue arrow again and slide the "download book" button to "off". It will remove itself shortly.

Unforterately, several of the books downloaded the wrong title.

Can you explain a little more so we can test? What book were you trying to download and what book actually downloaded?

As suggested in previous sections, I cleared all of my downloaded books and then did another download. I am using an Ipod Touch, 32Gb, with the latest update. I turned off my wifi and went to my library and all of the books I downloaded were there. I was probably confused in the reading tab, it showed some of the books that I previously opened; my fault for thinking they were part of the downloaded books.

I did have to open the books from my library to get them to show up in the reading section.

One problem is in the Revised Standard Version Bible - the quick scroll bar does not work 100%. You can scroll up to Ester 10 and that is where is stops jumping to the correct section. You can use the scroll bar to go further but it will show Ester 10. Using the verse button works fine; entering the verse into the search box does not work. For example: you can use the vese button and select PS, select chapter 23, verse 6 and it will go there. If you touch the screen to bring up the seach section, it shows Ester 10. I can scroll to Ps 25. If you enter Psalm 25 in the search box, you get an error loading book. You get the same error for all entries.

I tried this with other books and got the same results. I turned the wifi on and retried it and the entry function now works. So the verse search by entering the specific verse into the search function only works when the wifi is on?

So the verse search by entering the specific verse into the search function only works when the wifi is on?

Navigation by typing a Bible reference is not supported offline at this time.

Once I get to "sixth" -- the orange download arrow -- the app quits. It doesn't make it to message that the book is available offline. It has failed on more than one title. I'm using an iPod Touch (software version 3.2.1) on wifi. I have 52 gigs free.

I'm enjoying reading a book on my iPod. The app is great. I'm looking forward to having a book available offline.

I think there is a bug in the program's latest update that may be affecting many of us with crashes. I follow Dave Dunkin on Twitter and he mentioned something about a memory bug. I was frustrated with the app failing on me and was very critical today and then saw how some of the other iphone Bible app users were showing him some support and encouragement and felt convicted for my negativity. So here's to you Logos and Dave for producing what is going to be a great app.  I do feel for you having to deal with Apple's ridiculous app store approval stuff. If I put out a typo on my web site I just update it immediately. If the app store gets a bug that isn't found until its too late then its too late. That must really STINK big time!! And then you have to let it wait till you can fix it and then resubmit it and wait for them to approve which could take days to weeks for no good reason.

Just to offer as others have, I would be happy to bang on a beta version and submit my comments only to you to help out.

SWEET! I love that this feature was released as my Christmas Present (64G iPod Touch) arrived!

BUG notice: Summa Theologica English won't copy.

OK, perhaps I'm naive, but I though "offline reading" meant that I could read the book without a wireless connection.  Today I discovered that this assumption was wrong.

I was out visiting and had some downtime.  I pulled out my iPod Touch (32GB, latest OpSys) and started reading MacArthur's "Ashamed of the Gospel", which I had previously set to read offline, and I see the little airplane icon on top of the cover art in my Library.  I had no connection, and yet ever page I turned was met with an error message "Error loading book  Logos could not load the specified book".

This is very annoying for two reasons.  First, this is not exactly "offline" reading.  Why "download" a resource if it's then useless?  Second, why do I have to dismiss this error message for every single page that I flip to (I could read additional pages for a while, but eventually reached a completely white screen)?

I hope both of the behaviors are bugs that will be corrected.

    Regards,

    Steve

    Ryan,

Every time I try to set any book to be available off line nothing happens and the app crashes.  Anyone else having this issue?

    Paul Henry

Paul, which version of the app are you running?

    Hello Kelly,

I'm running the latest, 1.2.1.  Seems every time I try to set any book to read off line, after about 30 seconds the APP shuts down without downloading anything.  It will reboot without any apparent other problems.  Strange.

    Paul

Sorry about that Paul, go ahead and sync your phone, that will send the data to Logos.  They are aware of your issue since you have posted it here.  I am certain that one of them will say something here shortly.

Every time I try to set any book to be available off line nothing happens and the app crashes.

This is a known issue that we are working on. It affects some users but not others.

I purchased my iphone Friday Jan. 1 and downloaded the app.  I was able to download about four our five books for offline reading.  On about the fifth book the app began crashing during download.  I deleated and reinstalled the app, losing the books downloaded.  From that point on I have not been able to download any books.  I have synced the app program with itunes.  God speed on working out the fix.

    Dave,

I updated the APP this morning and the "Reading off line" seems to be working fine now.  I downloaded a book, turned the phone to airplane mode and pulled up the book with no problems.  turned the Airplane mode off and everything loaded backup with no problems.  Really sweet to be reading a book on my phone and get back to my laptop and pull up the book and have it open up to the same page I was on while reading it from my phone.  Not sure about the others that are still having trouble.

    Thanks

    Paul

If the book is downloaded and available offline will it default to reading it offline first and then go online. Or will it default to accessing online unless the net is not available.

I would assume the first is true, but just wanted to ask.

Yes, I am having the same issue with the App crash while trying to download a book.  I am using version 1.2.1 that was suppose to resolve this issue, but still have the problem.

Gaylon, please update to 1.2.2, released yesterday.

Yes, I am having the same issue with the App crash while trying to download a book.  I am using version 1.2.1 that was suppose to resolve this issue, but still have the problem.

Update to ver 1.2.2 and see if that fixes your problem

Is(will) offline reading supported in the web version?

It appears that with the latest update (1.2.2), the "downloaded but unopened book would not open in offline mode" bug is still there.

I had trouble updating to version 1.2.2 yesterday.  I had to delete the app from my phone and computer, then download the newest version onto my computer, then sinc my phone with itunes.  This intalled the updated version (1.2.2) .  Then when I tried to download books for offline reading, I would get the airplane logo in my library but the books were not available offline.  Then I turned airplane mode off, opened the app, opened the book I wanted to download, navigated to a few different points in the book, and then initiated the download.  This process worked for me.  All of the books that were opened in the app before beginning the download are now available for offline reading.

It appears that with the latest update (1.2.2), the "downloaded but unopened book would not open in offline mode" bug is still there.

    Hi Amy,

Does this occur with a specific book or any book you've tried to download for offline mode?

    Thanks,
    Melissa

Is(will) offline reading supported in the web version?

It is unlikely due to the significant technical challenges with offline web apps.

My wife and I just got our iPhones and this was one of the first apps I downloaded. Unfortunately I am unable to download any books so that I can read them offline. Every book I've checked has the read offline option greyed out. If anyone could provide some assistance I would appreciate it.

    Thanks.

    Chris

Unfortunately I am unable to download any books so that I can read them offline. Every book I've checked has the read offline option greyed out.

You need to have a license for the book to be able to download it for offline use. If you don't have Logos 4, you can get it here: http://www.logos.com/basepackages.

Hey Dave, even with Logos 4 there are a some books that have the download icon (switch) greyed out. Like the NKJV and quite a few other bibles and resources; I figured this was a license thing and eventually they will be downloadable?

Not all books can be downloaded yet for various reasons, but we're working on it.

Will there be any plans to put offline viewing function into the web version instead of just for iPhone? I would expect at least 100 printed pages worth of content to download when I go off the network coverage area.

With the launch of Nexus-One, will there also be plans to develop an app for Android based phones?

Ditto here - will there be an app for the new Google phone?

Will there be any plans to put offline viewing function into the web version instead of just for iPhone?

    Unlikely due to technical challenges.

will there also be plans to develop an app for Android based phones?

    Not at this time.

I am using version 1.2.2. I have downloaded several books (I have an ipod with 60 gigabytes), most of which is available. After several downloads, the program just kicks me out.  However, a few books seem to have downloaded if I can believe the jet plan icon on the book list. When I go offline and click on my library, only a few of the books are actually accessible, less than the number of books marked with a jet plane icon. I never got the message on any of them saying , xxxx is now available offline. However, while I was downloading, I did see a download icon, which then changed to the jet plane icon.

James, if you download too many books at once, the app can run out of memory and quit. We're working on that. We removed the "now available offline" alert because it was intrusive.

I'm going to suggest that it's not only LOADING (or downloading) books but also just LISTING too many books that causes a crash. It has crashed after I told it to load more on the BOOK LIST from which download selections are made.

James, it would be helpful if you could send a crash report. Thanks.

I love this thing, but I always want more!  Does anyone know of a way to get the selected books from our Library to sync over the cable connection (like the Logos App itself does in Itunes Store)? I have no problem doing it the way over the WiFI, it just takes time, and I am impatient (I do pray about it.).

Karen, not sure what you are asking for.

What do you mean by sync?

What do you mean by Wi-Fi v. Cable?

Currently when you are connected to the Internet you can download any book to your device. It will be available when you are not connected to the Internet (you have a Wi-Fi only device like an iPod Touch or iPad or you are on Airplane mode with iPhone).

Then when you read, it should sync with Logos servers and tell them where the last left off spot was each time you are connected. Sometimes this can be spotty. But it works pretty well.

Other things that sync are reading plans and favorites.

Unfortunately that's not possible. iTunes doesn't allow individual applications to sync data in that way (plus the books on desktop Logos are in a different format to iPhone Logos, so it wouldn't work anyway).

Actually Mark with the arrival of the ipad today apps can sync files via itunes. I heard this on MacBreak weekly that Pages files can be added to the ipad via itunes interface. Haven't tried it yet as my ipad is still out in nowhere land. But if it works on the iPad, maybe this could be a way to get books on the Logos ipad/iphone app.
