Infinite download

I have L4 and a week ago or so I received a message that it needed to download a 2.7 MB update. It never progressed past 0%. I would let it sit for hours or cancel and restart the program, etc. nothing worked. I called cust serv. and they sent me a link to download a "fix" for infinite download. That worked the first day but now everytime I start the program it says it needs to "index" which usually takes a couple of minutes and then I get the download message again. The prgram seems to be running fine other than that. Any suggestions?

Hi it seems a book may be causing this problem, to "fix" it we would have to remove the book or books and get a new copy. To do this we need some log files please read http://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging - upload them here.

What are your system specs? How much free disk space do you have on C? It may work by erasing the temporary download job at C:\Users\rdeck\AppData\Local\Temp\DownloadProgress-jrzrwoxj.guz.db and then launching logos, it seems BITS is doing something funky with its download jobs. If it doesn't work, then please ensure logging is enabled by running the enablelogging.js file (see previous link) before launching Logos and then do the process all over. This time let it sit at the download for some time before cancelling it, and then post both logs, we need to find out which resource is causing this and then erase that to fix this issue.

OK, I deleted the file you mentioned with no effect. My specs are--CPU 2.17GHZ; 2G RAM, Win 7, 90GB free space on C. I let it run about 10 minutes before shutting it down and am attaching the logs.8713.Logos4.zip

    0880.Logos4Indexer.zip

It isn't obvious to me which resource is causing this but we have had previous customers fix this problem by erasing the e4 book from L4 and L3 resource folders and downloading the new one. Can you locate the file e4_dvdpk.lbxlls? Check your L3 resources folder and C:\Users\rdeck\AppData\Local\Logos4\Data\jrzrwoxj.guz\Resources. If you find it, erase it and obtain a new copy from:

    http://resources.assets.logos.com/lls_7.0.1204/2003-02-28T17_10_29Z/e4_dvdpk.lbxlls

Just download that into your L3 resources folder and restart Logos. Let me know if that is the case, if not I wil have to do more analysis.

I found and deleted the file from L3 but I couldn't find it in L4. I opened Logos before I downloaded the new file and same result. Downloaded the file into L3, reopened Logos and am still getting the same result. It says it is indexing for a minutes before it starts the "download"

Ok were going to have to dig deep.

    3113.Logos4Indexer.NLog.config

Please download this file, rename it to Logos4Indexer.NLog.config and then make a copy of it and name that Logos4.NLog.config, and place these files in your Logos Log Files folder. Now once more reproduce the issue and this time the logs should have very detailed information.

Try erasing the file LLS_4000QUESTANSR_2009_10_26T20_34_38Z.mstidx -- from C:\Users\...\...\Resources\logos

I can't seem to find that file in L3 or L4. I also put in the computer search and it doesn't come up. I found the book "4000 Questions" but not a file like you list

Ok well let's try erasing that resource, it is the last one that comes up before it tries to download the update, and since your index has been requested to rebuild it will not build until it gets the updated resource.

Edit: Sorry forgot to give you the link:

    ftp://ftp.logos.com/LbxBooks/4000QUESTANSR.lbxlls

And for safety try this other one too ALONEGOD.logos4 -- again in your L4 resources folder - erase it from there.

ftp://ftp.logos.com/LbsBooks/alonegod.lbxlss -- this is actually the last one the indexer touches before stopping the index process - it is an L3 resource, after you download it to your L3 resources folder and run logos, it should cause it to download the L4 version of it.

If that doesn't work we can look into checking out the BITS download jobs. You may download the bitsadmin.exe utility here http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/InstallerBeta/bitsadmin.exe right-click and save target to your desktop.  After launching Logos, once the logos blue indexer icon says downloading 2.7mb (0%) we will run the bitsadmin.exe. Since it is command line tool go to start-->cmd and type in 'cd desktop', in the command line type in 'bitsadmin /list' and post what you see, a screenshot would be best.

I deleted both books. It downloaded updates totaling more than 800MB. I'm not sure how much of that was the books coming back and how much was some other update. It spent a while indexing and then had me restart. After the restart, it show the same never starting update:(

I am attaching a screen shot of what you had me do.7532.Logos issue.doc

Ok I was hoping that would have fixed it. In the command line use the command 'bitsadmin /reset' - that should reset all jobs and Logos4 should make new ones. Let me know what happens.

That seems to have stopped it. It cancelled it then when I logged back on it didn't pop up. So far so good. That seems a little simple though. Do I need to do anything else? Should all my books be back?

It could have been an older job or something, I'm wondering now if it will come up tomorrow. Anyways, were you missing some books to start with? Those two that we erased are definitely back, hence the 800mb download earlier. Let me know how things go.

    George,

It's a new day, month, year and still so far so good. It's working fine. Thanks for your help. No, I'm not missing any books that I know of....just wondering what the download may have been. Should I delete the program I downloaded to my desktop? Thanks again for your help! I'm slowly but surely learning more about L4 but what I know so far, I love. Planning on my wife and I to go to a Camp Logos in Feb. Hope you have a great New Year.

    Hi George,

I am having essentially the same problem on my 4GB Dell Laptop running XP.  The original install during the first week of December went very smoothly and I believe that I have successfully performed some updates.  I am currently at Logos Bible Software 4 SR-7 (4.0.3.3272).  The software reports that there are 1.8 GB of update.  I get a logos icon added to the tray which has the cancel option.  But the download never starts as evidenced by no progress and no packets being received as reported by Windows.

I have Scholars with about 5 other packages including some E4 content.  Do you want me to capture a log or should I start by using the techniques from this thread?  If so, which ones first?

I have also installed on my fairly new HP desktop and that machine seems to be behaving.

I would like to point out that the HP desktop has the "synchronize" widget in the upper right of the window while the failing laptop does not show this widget.  Maybe that might give you a clue.

    Regards and Thanks,

    David

Hi David, it sounds like the Use Internet option might be set to No on your laptop. Can you confirm this? Go to Tools->Program Settings and make sure the Use Internet option is set to Yes, and also make sure Automatically Update Downloads is set to Yes. Then close and re-open Logos4. It should trigger the download. Let me know how it goes

    George,

I have investigated this possibility for several days.  I have toggled Use Internet and Automatic download off and on just to make sure that there was not a "sticky" setting.  I have even tried to intitiate the download using the button which displays on the settings menu when the automatic setting is turned off.  I have tried restarts of L4 before and after changing these settings to no avail.

L4 determines that "downloads are available" indicated by a popup in the lower right hand corner of the screen.  Soon after the "download" icon displays in the far right toolbar tray with the option to cancel the download.  I actually left the laptop running all night long last night just to see if the download would budge off the "0% of 1.8 GB" initial message.  After more than 8 hours nothing happened.

The windows task manager reports a Logos4 indexing process which takes about 2% of a CPU which was running continuously.  It also did not "complete" during the night.  Perhaps the download is waiting on the completion of an unending indexing activity?

The indexer is smart enough to realize that if you have many resources that need to be updated it will stop indexing until you get those resources. The only way the updates are displayed and not downloaded is if you have automatically download updates set to no and use internet set to yes. It may be the case that the indexer has run into a problematic resource and somehow prevented the download jobs from continuing or something. There are two things we can try. We can try to look through the Logos4Indexer.log file for any errors and we can use bitsadmin to clear the download jobs. I believe I talked about how to use bitsadmin.exe earlier in this thread. You may go ahead and try clearing the download jobs with bitsadmin first then we can check the indexer logs if that doesn't fix it.

Edit: Also have you run system restore recently, like in the several days?

  • David A Egolf
    David A Egolf Member Posts: 798 ✭✭

No, I have never run system restore.

Thanks for your fast response.  I am at work now and I will try the "bits" activity tonight while I watch the game.  If that doesn't work, then I will look for the log file.  If I can't find it, then I will use the procedure earlier in the thread and generate a log.

    Regards,

    David

BTW: My L4 appears to be fully operational and currently works fine.  I just want to be positioned to get some of the upcoming updates with new functionality that are supposed to be available in the next couple of months.  So for me this is not a critical activity.

The software also does not appear to be synchronizing with the desktop copy.  I'm very interested to find out how this will work once it starts behaving.  I was very pleased that the desktop built with the snapshots I had already set up on my laptop.  However, the snapshots are currently not flowing back and forth.  I presume that this will start up again once the downloads are working.

By having Use Internet set to Yes on both machines, then both of them should show the little sync icon in the top-right corner, and *should* sync together. Some of the updates that are coming out are beta releases, please read http://community.logos.com/forums/t/8883.aspx - if you wish to participate in the beta and are still having sync issues we may continue discussing them in this thread, let me know your plans.

I think it might be interesting to try a Beta, but AFTER I have this download / synchronization problem fixed and I have a chance to determine what appropriate behavior is.

As I mentioned in my first post, the "sync icon" is NOT being shown on the laptop which is the same machine where the download is blocked.  However, the "sync icon" does show on my desktop machine.  Use Internet is set to Yes on both machines.

Okay, yea another option is try try manually sync'ing by typing in the command 'Sync Now' - I am still worried that the sync icon doesn't show up when you have use internet set to Yes. On my machine and my other test machine if I set Use Internet to Off and restart Logos then the sync icon is gone, if I re-enable use internet and restart L4 the sync icon comes back.

Also it would be a good idea to update both machines to 4.0aSR-2 - as this is not a beta but the latest release.

  • David A Egolf
    David A Egolf Member Posts: 798 ✭✭

I do not believe that I did anything different, but things shook loose this evening.  As soon as I started Logos 4 on my laptop, the 'sync icon' showed up and appeared to sync.  However, my note from the desktop did NOT show up.  I had just performed a forced sync from my desktop with the note so I expected it to copy to the laptop.  I will keep track of this later.

As well as the 'sync icon' showing up, the download changed from 1.8 GB to 2.8 GB. But this time there was data being downloaded.  When it got to about 5% Logos reported an update to be installed.  I installed and it rebooted to 4.0aSR-2.  So both my copies are currently at this latest version.  There is still 2.55 GB of download which now actually downloading!!  It is reporting about 33% done as I type.  Indexing started as soon as the install rebooted.

So whatever it was seems to have decided to work.  I did not resort to deleting resources or using the bitsadmin utility.

Thank you for your attention.  Now that I am up the current software level I am not concerned.  However, I am wondering what you intended me to do in order to "update both machines to 4.0aSR-2"?  Is there a way to update to a specific release (other than a Beta, of course)?

    Regards,

    David

One more piece of the puzzle.  I just forced a synchronization on the laptop after the latest release was installed and my notes from the desktop arrived.  They probably would not copy before due to the differences in the releases.

  • George Allakhverdyan
George Allakhverdyan Member Posts: 1,075 ✭✭✭

Glad it works! It makes sense it didn't sync because of the version differences. Have fun [:)]

I think it's all O.K.  The synchronization is moving notes, snapshots, and reading plans in both directions.  The index rebuild finished about 45 minutes ago.  This Logos version appears to be very promising!

    Thank you for your assistance.

Hi George, I hope you will get this reply after so much time has passed. My wife just got a new computer that is our "home computer so I loaded L4 on that laptop. It seemed to load fine and so forth. When it first opened an was indexing it started a download of 3 gig+. It got to 99% and stopeed and guess what!! it now says it needs to download 2.7 MB just like mine did. I was going to go through the steps you did with me to stop it but we noticed today that she has 1 less book in the library than I do. Suggestions?

Hi Raymond, for licensing stuff it might help to call customer service, I'm thinking there is a download script you may be able to use but I'm not completely sure - it'll probably be the fastest way to recover that resource. Another possible solution is following the wiki instructions for installing on a second pc without re-downloading - http://wiki.logos.com/Quick_Installation_onto_multiple_computers - unless you can narrow down which particular resource it is - in which case the you can download it from ftp.logos.com and perform a scan
