BUG: Blue circle Icon wont say what its doing

I'm on 6.4 Beta 4 (the beta 5 is not detecting at present).

The blue circle icons that should tell me its rebuilding the index, or downloading, or whatever its up to has not been telling me anything most times I've checked in recent days. Right now I got a <1> circle but if I hover mouse over it, I don't get any tooltip prompt or other text reporting the status.

To be honest, I preferred the old way, but maybe the new one would be OK if it seemed to work.

I'm on Windows 7, 64-bit on a "normal" Intel based desktop PC.

Does anything happen when you click on the blue circle?

Can you clarify what you mean by preferring the old way? What specifically is it that's changed that you aren't liking?

I have a couple male teenagers that are the same way.

To be honest, I preferred the old way,

But seriously, folks, I agree the old way was more user-friendly.

Please help me understand what this refers to. Which part of the entire update system is it that you are saying you liked better?

I can't speak for Jim, but I liked the one where the orange-ish bar appeared below the shortcut bar with the operation listed along with the percentage of the download, index, etc.

I went digging for some old screenshots that showed it, but can't find one.  The bar would be in the area indicated by the red box in the pic below.

That bar will show up when you do an explicit update (using the "update now" or "update resources" commands), unless you have the "Show the Notification Bar" setting turned off. Background updates don't show the bar to prevent workflow interruption annoyance.

That makes sense, though I'd counter with the shortcut bar area being about the worst place to put the blue dot, as there's not nearly enough space there to begin with.

Anytime indexing is happening, I'd like to be able to see the status without a hover. That's primarily why I like the old method.

    Thanks for the info, Andrew.

The downside to using a notification bar that expands and collapses though is that it adjusts the layout of pretty much everything else in the window, which can be disrupting.

You are supposed to see status when you hover. If you aren't seeing a tooltip, it's a bug.

That's why I was trying to get some additional information from the OP regarding what happens when you click on the icon.

    Andrew,

Currently 6.4 Beta 5 but its done it in recent times: a blue circle with a "1" in it. No Tool Tip. Single or double left and or right mouse clicks do nothing. Also the "normal" windows thing of clicking somewhere else and returning to the icon still does nothing. That sometimes works on other apps that have lost focus.

Tool Tips are working on the help "?", the sync icon, and various other places that might be expected to display one, but nothing on the blue "1".

When there was a "2" at one point last time I was using it last week, it showed the tool tips about indexing and new resources or whatever it was saying.

Right now I've just restarted the app after not using it for a few days. Again a blue "1" and no tool tip!

(Win 7-64 bit and all current patches etc.)

The OLD WAY I ;iked was when it was down in the tool bar. It would say what its up to. I guess I might like the new one if it worked! Whats not cool is the missing tool tip and no idea what on earth its doing.

Oh - and it was maybe 90 secs until the main app window opened. Really not very good in my view. And no, I don't have a slow pc. Its get lots of ram, lots of spare disk (but not SSD) and its not my pcs fault in my view.

    Andrew,

OK so right after I posted above and went back to the app, it now shows the same blue "1" but also a banner there are updates ready. AND the Tool Tip now reports the same!

So its working right now, but whatever the "1" was about 10 mins ago was not displaying the Tool Tip.

I've shrink the window down to make it smaller, but that's what its currently showing, and the Tool Tip is working.

    Andrew,

    More details ...

I clicked to begin the above download (includes 4.6 RC1 I expect), and the blue icon changed to "2" and reported two Tool Tips of "Downloading blah blah (xx%)" and "Prepairing Resources".

When the download completed, the icon changed back to "1" and then reported something (I forget already). Its now changed back to "2" and reporting "A download etc ..." and "Indexing ...".

This tells me the Tool Tip worls at times, but maybe the "1" does not always go away when the "whatever it was doing" completes. So I'm suggesting maybe there was no Tool Tip because there really was nothing, and the but is not failure to display the TT, but failure to nuke the blue icon. Just suggesting based on what I remember from last time and what I was this time. Excuse typos and spelling - and multiple posts, but if this helps fix a bug I guess its worth it.

Wow - I really did mess up my typing and spelling above, but it kind of reads OK so I never went and fixed it.

OK - so I let the indexing complete and the "2" changed back to a "1", being "An update ... next restart etc" Tool Tip.

On restarting, it came up after around a minute. Again, a "1" in the blue icon, but no Tool Tip.

Hovering over sync showed it as synced, but clicking to force a resync, the blue "1" went away.

So maybe its NOT erasing the "1" from a "next restart" under some conditions, even after there is not anything pending???

(Or not - its just changed to "1" and indexing as I also picked up a few Vyrso titles in the past 20 mins).

Would logs report the Tool Tip updates?

Every time I start Logos I get a Blue Circle with a 1 and opening the library will say it is preparing the library. No tool tip on the blue circle. Both will disappear after some time with no apparent action taken....

Jim, thanks for all the extra information about your situation. The lack of tooltip is definitely a bug. I've created a case to investigate this further, and the extra details may help us track down the problem. I don't believe the log files will provide any additional information.

I have had the same mysterious blue "(1)" circle for a few weeks now. Whether I click on or scroll over it, no notification is given. I have clicked on it, tapped, repented, rebuked it, etc and it still won't go. It may only be removed by prayer and fasting at Logos.

(Using Logos Bible Software 6.3 SR-26.3.0.0074)

    Thanks for reporting this BUG.

Just an added note: I also noticed that my Windows version of Logos has also been crashing/shutting down quite regularly over the same course of time I have been dealing with the blue "(1)" circle that does not want to go away.

Jason try updating to the latest version of the software https://www.logos.com/install and see if that corrects it. If not, then post your logs by following the steps outlined here.: https://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging

    Lynden,

The problem Jason is experiencing in 6.3 is pretty much the same problem I have been experiencing in 6.4 and your response to my query was that this was the new normal behavior now.https://community.logos.com/forums/p/106990/740055.aspx#740055  The blue notification icon is always present when I launch Logos and when I hover over it there is no indication or information of what it is doing and as I believe was mentioned earlier in this thread that is a bug and is being looked into.

This should be fixed in 6.6 Beta 1.
