Unexpected: Editing Passage Guide template, or Exegetical Guide Template

I love the idea of being able to create custom guides, but my expectation is that if I go to edit either the passage guide, the exegetical guide, or the word study guide those changes should be reflected in the main templates so that, for example, when I click the go button from the home page it should bring up the customized passage guide. Right now editing the passage guide or exegetical guide template creates a copy and I end up editing a copy rather than the master.

As a side note, it would be great to be able to select a custom workspace to load up from the passage guide. Even just having the option to bring up a Bible only plus passasge guide would be great. Right now if I start from the go box on the start page I end up closing a bunch of resources and open others that I would want to use. It's the closing out of a bunch of resources that bothers me.

    Craig,

in my mind; always keeping a "master" copy is a good thing. the issue is that you should be able to USE your modified copy as the DEFAULT right?

You can do what I did for now:

1.) Create a PG the way you want it via "guides>make a new guide template"

2.) open any resources you want  and set all settings

3.) go to "layouts" and save the current one with a name

then that complete setup is now saved with that name; PG bible resources; everything.

I know it's not exactly what you want...but it's workable for now.

    Craig,

    you know what's weird?

If you pick a passage and set up a guide and layout; when you go to the homepage and type in THAT reference...that setup will come up...but if you type in another ref...you get the unmodifed default template.

We don't let you edit the "master" copy because it may change in future releases, and it would be impossible for us to correctly merge the changes with your changes; you might never know that the new functionality had been released.

It does seem reasonable to let you make your copy of one of the built-in Guides be the default for that type; do we need explicit controls for choosing this, or could we use a convention? (e.g. If you put "My " on the front of the the same name, it overrides the default. A new template saved as "My Passage Guide" would then be preferred over "Passage Guide" by the system?)

I think explict controls would be preferable to a convention. I imagine that a convention would most likely be unituitive for those of us who don't immediately jump to documentation.

Bob, I'd love the possibility of setting a default version of the guides (esp. the passage guide.) I would be happy with either a naming convention or a control in the program settings. This would solve the issue I've named elsewhere of being unable to start anthing but the master version of the guides from the irght-click context menu.

First, the idea itself is awesome! Thanks Bob for creating a program that searches with such customized controls. It is quite amazing to think how far computing has come in such a short time.

Anyway, I think Craig is right, the more explicit the system, the less user frustration.

I hope you are still considering this Bob.

Not being able to edit master is a good thing...but we should be able to set a default guide that is opened for each of the major type of guides eg, passage, word study, exegetical.  There should be explecit controls for choosing what are the defaults in program settings. A convention forces people into a naming scheme that they might not apprecaiate.

Me too...I'd like to have a drop down setting like so:

    General program settings:

    Default Passage Guide

    1.) Logos

    2.) Bobs Guide (user created)

    3.) Blank (user created)

    4.) Commentaries only (user created)

    Default Exegetical Guide

1.) Word by word only (user created)

2.) Word by word + Grammars (user created)

    Default BWS

    and on and on
