Highlighting and notes not working on iPhone and ipad

Hi friends,

Last night as I was doing my nightly bible reading in bed, I found that highlighting and note taking no longer works on either my phone or iPad. It was working 2 nights ago, but now when I try  highlight by either dragging my finger (what I normally do), or by selecting the text and manually trying to enter a highlight or note, nothing happens. I have restarted the app and the device but neither works. If it was just my iPad I would think it is something wrong with my device, but since it's both my phone and iPad it seems like it must be something on Logos' end? But I checked the App Store and it doesn't look like there were any recent updates that would have broken the notes function. Anyone know what might be going on?

    Hi Ben

Ive just tried making notes and highlights on my iPad and it works fine.

i have seen something similar to what you are reporting on a number of occasions but not recently.

Do you get the same thing if you operate in airplane mode? This would eliminate any interaction with Logos servers

Thank you for responding Graham. I tried airplane mode but it didn't resolve the issue.

That says it's nothing to do with Logos servers but local to your devices.

Which app are you using and which version?

Do you get the same lack of highlighting in all resources?

Good question. Just realized it's only a problem in my esv bible. I tried removing it and then redownloading  to the device, but that didn't work. Any ideas? It's peculiar that it would stop working on both devices. My phone is ios9, iPad is still on 8. Both have most recent version of the app

    Interesting.

I can reproduce this in the ESV on my iPad - whether it is downloaded or not

Hopefully someone from Faithlife will be able to comment further

Edit: and I see something which seems similar was flagged earlier - https://community.logos.com/forums/t/106629.aspx - but I think it seemed to resolve itself

Thanks Graham for confirming it is not just me! If I don't see anything from them today I'll try and contact support.

How many note documents do you have associated with the ESV? Just the one? How many pages would it be if you were to print out? It is possible you have "large note syndrome."

I use multiple note documents. What is large note syndrome?

    What is large note syndrome?

    I coined it. [:)]

The mobile app has a tendency to have troubles when 1) A note document is "large" and/or 2) a single resource has many notes/highlights from multiple documents.

When the mobile app first added highlighting, Faithlife had just migrated to "highlights as notes." The default setting was to create note documents based on the pallet name of the highlighter. My habit was (and is) to highlight prolifically, so my main note document was pretty large, with the ESV having thousands of highlights. Adding a highlight on the mobile app at the time was a real pain. It could take up to two minutes for a highlight to appear after adding it! I discovered that creating a highlight in an unused resource in a brand new note document was nearly instantaneous.

The idea of notes going into a document named for the palette made no sense to me (still doesn't), so I create a "resource specific" note document for resources as I began to take notes in each one. I spent HOURS moving highlights from the BIG document to the little ones and performance was greatly enhanced. Faithlife has helped to make the situation much better, but users with prolific note/highlighting still pop up from time to time with troubles.

Since Graham is experiencing the same thing, I don't think it is related to "large note syndrome."
