Anchor Yale Bible sale - Catholic volumes
I just received an email from Brody highlighting the Anchor Yale Bible sale and pointing out that he has tagged the ones that were most applicable to Catholics:
I thought I'd share in case anyone doesn't get the emails. At $19.99 each, they are currently cheaper individually than they are per volume as part of the 88 volume set.
Thanks for doing this, Brody! I just noticed the sale earlier today and was wondering which volumes would be of most interest to Catholics. And here you did the legwork for me! I don't think I can spring for all 23 volumes at once, but this is a good starting point for me to select a few that would be of most interest.
The sale goes through February 1.

I got that email too. I happen to have the Anchor Yale Bible set but I thought Brody was very thoughtful to compile this list. Give him a call.

I happen to have the Anchor Yale Bible set.
What do you think of the set? I am thinking of getting the books on John's and Paul's writings.

Don't forget that if you buy more than $100 worth of these volumes, you can spread your payments over several months (with a monthly processing fee). That might make it easier to buy several volumes now.
My plan now is to get the Deuterocanonicals (books like Sirach and Tobit that Catholics and Orthodox recognize as Sacred Scripture, but which are not seen as canonical by most Protestants and Jews) because I don't have much on them. Also, the volumes on John and Luke (classics by Raymond Brown and Joseph Fitzmyer) and possibly a few others.
Like most series, I imagine that some volumes are better than others. Overall, however, this set was seen as one of the best when I was studying theology and Scripture.

I noticed that 12 of the AYB volumes (the ones by Brown, Fitzmeyer, and Blenkinsopp) are part of the Modern Catholic Authors bundle (and their respective author bundles). So if that is an aspirational purchase for anyone, then you may decide to choose some of the other volumes by Catholic authors if you are deciding between several volumes. Of course, if you pick up those volumes now, dynamic pricing kicks in for the larger bundles.
If anyone who owns the set has insights to share on which volumes they like, I'd be interested in hearing them.

I decided to buy the NT volumes by Catholic priests plus the Luke Timothy Johnson volume. A total of 10 volumes for me. I'll work on the rest later.

Brown and Fitzmyer are always excellent (once you understand their limitations, see Verbum Domini)

Hi,
I notice that https://verbum.com/products/46940/the-anchor-yale-bible-revelation-a-new-translation-with-introduction-and-commentary isn't in the sale... is that intentional?

Yes. It recently came out of Pre-Pub, at a higher price, so it has been omitted from the sale in order to be fair to those who bought it at the Pre-Pub price.

Thank you! That makes sense.
