I need search help in making a list of quotes Jesus made from Deuteronomy. Thank you very much.
If you have Logos Now you can use:
{Speaker <Person Jesus>} WITHIN {Label Intertext WHERE Source ~ <Deuteronomy>}
That includes allusions to Deuteronomy. If you just want exact quotes it's:
{Speaker <Person Jesus>} WITHIN ({Label Intertext WHERE Source ~ <Deuteronomy> AND Relationship="Quotation"}, {Label Intertext WHERE Source ~ <Deuteronomy> AND Relationship="Citation"})
The reference in 1 Timothy is showing up incorrectly because the first expression comes from Deuteronomy 25:4, whilst the second expression is something Jesus said in Luke 10:7. The Intertext labels apply to whole verses, not specific phrases.
Thanks Mark but I don't have Logos Now; I have Gold.
Then you need multiple steps, and a little more work:
Mark, I performed the Bible search and saved the search as a passage list. Opened the resource OT Quotations & Allusions in the NT. I clicked on the Visual Filters triangle and the saved passage list is not being shown. I must be doing something wrong.
On the Visual Filters menu, select the Passage List you saved in step 2
Mark,
it seems you utilize the very helpful "Filter by Passage List" feature here - which again, if I'm not mistaken, is part of Logos Now

Thread => What is Logos Now? includes Passage List Visual Filter (6.7) in Logos Now features (added in Logos 6.7)
One idea is creating another Passage List so can merge lists and keep intersection.
Bible Search for:
{Section <LiteraryTyping = Quotation, Old Testament>}
can be save as a Passage List, which can be merged with {Speaker <Person Jesus>} so intersection list has verses where Jesus spoke and OT was quoted.
Many Bibles have footnotes with source of OT quote so search can find footnote for Deuteronomy within Literary Type of OT Quotation:
([field footnote] Deuteronomy) WITHIN {Section <LiteraryTyping = Quotation, Old Testament>}
FYI: footnote in Complete Jewish Bible has Deuteronomy spelled out while AV1873 has "Cited from Deut."
Logos 6.5 expanded range of footnote search to WITHIN 500 characters so search results are grouped together WITHIN a chapter. Exporting Deuteronomy footnote results to a text file allows file to be imported into a Passage List. Caveat: only first verse reference in a chapter is imported: e.g. Mt 4:4 (the other two hits are not in exported Passage List).
Can use Search Result in Bible to locate additional verses in a chapter and manually add them to Footnote passage list.
When Deuteronomy Footnote Passage List is complete, then can merge with {Speaker <Person Jesus>} Passage List so intersection has verses with Speaker Jesus and OT Quote with Deuteronomy footnote.
Keep Smiling [:)]
[:$] Learned Deuteronomy footnote in Mark 12:30 also applied to Mark 12:29 plus Completer Jewish Bible does not have a Deuteronomy footnote for John 8:17 while AV 1873 has "Cited generally from Deut. 19. 15" in footnote. Luke 18:20 has an allusion to Exodus 20:12-16 and Deuteronomy 5:16-20 (so not found during footnote search).
FYI: created bug thread => Bug: 6.11 Beta 3 Literary Type OT Quotation missing that includes screen shot comparing Passage List and Logos Now search suggested by Mark Barnes:
On the Visual Filters menu, select the Passage List you saved in step 2 Mark, it seems you utilize the very helpful "Filter by Passage List" feature here - which again, if I'm not mistaken, is part of Logos Now
Darn. There's so much in Logos Now, that it's hard to keep track.
It means I'm running out of ideas. I did consider the footnotes trick that KS4J describes, but I found it too inaccurate.
The best I can do would be:
Possibly the biggest problem with this method is that it includes Allusions, not just Quotations. You can filter to just OT Quotations using {Speaker <Person Jesus>} WITHIN {Section <LiteraryTyping ~ Quotation, Old Testament>}, but if you do, you miss some results.
It has only 15 results. The first method I showed you had 22. Matt 4:7, 5:31, Mark 7:10, 10:19, Luke 4:12, 18:20 are missing, mostly probably due to a search bug. Also missing - probably because there's a question as to whether it's a quote or an allusion - is Matt 18:16 and John 8:17.
I've reported the missing results as a search bug.
would merge of passage lists solve the problem ... just the union of the 2 lists
Yes, I suppose it would.
Thanks everyone for all the help. I ended up making a table and manually entered passages by scrolling down the Deuteronomy section from the resource, noting passages in caps.
