Never type a song lyric again - mis-advertising.

This advert once again popped up on my home page - I very nearly posted this in the blog comment section.

I do think that punters need to be warned - it is what the advert, pointedly does not show that concerns me.

I was demonstating this to a potential new user today and they were really impressed by the way typing in the title field brought up a paneful of song suggestions which were pretty much indistinguishable. I randomly opened a hymn book and we tried

You too can import all the versions into Proclaim and then try and sort out which one you actually want.

Just to make life easier all the versions you reject will remain in your 'Reuse Items' list with truncated names just so that you cannot recognise the one you want a second time.

Notice the (in)convenient feature that makes the pane un-expandable so that you cannot even see the full title of the hymn.

Please do not advertise this feature until is useful in practice!

Hey Mike, I agree that we don't give an easy way to distinguish between varaiations on songs. One idea we have thrown around internally is to provide a flyout pane that would appear to the right of the song. As you mouse over the various songs, the full lyrics would be displayed on the right.

Would this help you when choosing songs?

Also, currently, you should be able to select song lyrics, see them, and then select new ones in the same Song Lyrics Service Item. You just may have to delete the last character of the title and re add it to initiate a new search. This won't result in cluttering your reuse items.

I was surprised that hovering over the name in reuse items didn't show the full name... So we I'm adding that now!

Thanks for the response - have you seen the 'Text Comparison Window' in that outlandish software suite called Logos?

I guess that is too much to ask?

What might be feasible in the short term would be

allow the pop up box that displays the suggestions to be expandable to the right so that the full song titles and attributions can be displayed.
in the event of not being able to have the song lyrics appear on hover (or on single click) over the titles; move the drop down box to the right so that it does not cover the lyrics pane and make it remain visible until the final selection is made and the pane dismissed.
make the 'Reuse Item' able to select on sort by Hymn Book. I mean that Faithlife would have to add a hymn book field along with the Hymn Number entry box. That would allow me to type CMP 253 into 'Reuse Items' and have the lyrics that matched 253 in Complete Mission Praise pop up. That would be really useful.
3a with a bit of cleaver data mining you would be able to compile the contents lists of your customer's hymnbooks and perhaps offer an enhanced service in terms of matching lyrics to sources.

You might be interested to know that at the moment I consider it cost effective in terms of time to subscribe to the Mission Praise site at a cost of £80 ($115) per year in order to circumvent the Song Select debacle. I also use a CD of the song lyrics for Church Hymnary 4 to retrieve the words that match those in that hymn book.

It would be great if this was unnecessary and it Proclaim efficiently provided that functionality.

Seeing more of the lyrics and the full attribution definitely sounds like a good improvement.
