Installing only a subset of resources

Hi Folks

I have a Windows 10 Tablet with only 32GB of storage of which around 15GB is free prior to installing Logos. Is it possible to only install a subset of Logos resources on it (all my resources would probably exceed the free space available)? Say a two-three preferred commentaries and half a dozen bible translations for use on the go?

It is possible - but that's a "hack" that is not supported by Faithlife.

Other forum users have provided detailed instructions (don't have a link right at my fingertips unfortunately) - basically you set up a full installation on your regular PC, switch off internet usage and strip it down by hiding the stuff you don't want to keep - so far until you reach the size limit you can afford on your device. Then you transfer that installation to the device.

OK, I have been playing with this, and may have a temporary UNSUPPORTED answer.

Install Logos 6 on a clean machine

Run setup as normal and enter login details, and as soon as the preparing to download window starts kill your internet connection, and kill the logos6.exe

restart logos and say work offline, be patient it will load logos with 0 books in the library

Turn off Automatic download

Copy the book files you want onto a usb an use the "Scan command"

let it run and index

after index is complete, reconnect to internet

on restart will show synchronise, don't panic, is bringing in your notes and stuff

Here is the caveat, when you restart it will show you how many GB it wants to download

try to resist the urge to click..or you will be back to same problem

As I say it is likely not supported by Logos - use at your own risk, and don't click the download link, or you will be in same situation as you are currently in.

as for updates, haven't worked that out yet, you may need to reinstall new version over the top.. but have not attempted this yet.. so not sure yet on futureproofing, hence the unsupported bit, as for book updates may be impossible..

I have only 78 of 6000+ Books installed on this win 10 tablet, with a 2.5gb footprint as opposed to a full install footprint of 29.1 GB

Your notes etc, should still sync

Alternative to hiding is selectively copy of resource files from a full installation followed by using scan command in subset installation.

Note: indexing and other database files need ~50 % more space so if 15 GB of space was available, would copy less than 10 GB of resource files.

So it sounds like you have to

Start a clean installation on the tablet
Stop it before it downloads any resources by turning off the Internet Connection
Restart Logos with Internet Connection still off.
Tell it to work in offline mode.
Turn off automatic downloads
Copy required resources to a folder (no usb port on tablet)
Run scan command
Let it run and index
Restore Internet Connection
Restart, and let it synchronize.
When using it, don't click download updates.

uncheck “Automatically Download Updates”
Copy required resources to a folder ----> this assumes you already have a full installation
Sign in to Logos when installation has completed
Run scan command i.e. scan the folder at step 4
Let it run and index
When using it, don't click download updates.
Use web link for software updates
Use Scan command for resource updates ----> get them from a full installation

Note that the books you choose will be files with the following extensions:-

*.logos4   ----> Logos 4/5/6 format books incl. Vyrso
*.lbxlls     ----> Logos 3 format books
*.lbspbb    ----> personal books
*.lbxclv     ----> Clause Visualizers (if you want Syntax Search)
*.lbxtml     ----> Logos 4 timelines
*.lbshtm    ----> Interactive resources

Files with other extensions are your datasets that are all pretty much needed for your Logos to function e.g. reverse interlinears (NT/OT), pericopes, excerpts (Home Page), LCV (topics), morphology, lemmas, grammar, referents, events, ancient literature, pronunciation, preaching themes, etc. These can take up to 4 GB of space.

So it is not a simple undertaking to merely have a chosen subset of resources and minimise disk usage.

Hmmm... starting to look impractical and using biblia.com is the easy option. Unfortunately this only works when an internet connection is available. I was hoping for an offline solution.

If you pick the books you want (the filename is on their Info page) and copy them to a folder, you will find that Logos automatically installs necessary datasets when you install as described. You can always work offline after the online installation and also find out how workable it is.

Does your tablet have an SD card slot?

I have a 32Gb tablet and I put a 64Gb SD card in it, I then moved the Logos data folder from my local profile on to the SD card. In the original location I created a "symbolic link" which makes Logos think the data is there but in reality it references it off my SD card.

Resources are a tiny bit slower but in general I have no issues with it with day to day use, I have about 15Gb of resources and have them all available on my tablet and don't have to worry about it connecting to the Internet etc... like the above workarounds.

If you want more detailed instructions I can give them.

For the benefit of anybody who wants to know how to do this...

Navigate to the following folder, USERNAME and UNIQUEID will be unique to your installation

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Logos\Data\UNIQUEID\ResourceManager

Ensure Logos is closed, then right click and "cut" your Resources folder and place it on your SD card, in our example I am using \Logos so I now have a folder in there called \Logos\Resources that is full of any resources that were on my onboard memory.

Once the files have moved from the top of Windows Explorer, click the path and then copy it to your clipboard ready for the next step.

Open up a command line from the start menu (right click it and run as administrator), from here you need to type the following (copy and pasting the path you placed in the clipboard from earlier), if it does not have "Resources" on the end ensure you add it so that the path looks like below.

mklink /J "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Logos\Data\UNIQUEID\ResourceManager\Resources" "D:\Logos\Resources"

Start Logos and you should see your resources and all future resources will be loaded on to your SD card. I have left the index files on the main storage as generally this improves the performance of Logos.

Thanks for responding. No it doesn't have a SD slot. Getting the resources on the Tablet's hard drive is not difficult because Ican access them across the LAN via a shared folder on another machine

Scan starts comparing resource files in source folder immediately. Scan is done when indexing completes. Depends on resource if appears in Library count: e.g. Reverse Interlinear resource files (*.lbsrvi) do not appear in Library count.

If have Logging enabled, can check logs for progress.

Just a word of thanks and appreciation for your help with this project. Now I'm a happy user on two different tablets both with limited hard drive space but now with a just a small subset of resources that I can take on the "road" anywhere.

Although one of Logos' key strengths is its ability to cross reference across a huge library, it's still amazing how much utility one can get from a relatively small number of resources;

For example, it's just nice to be able to pull up ESVSB and read about the historical context as our church starts a series on the Book of John, while the speaker goes through his [lengthy :-)] preamble...

Or to have a Gk-Heb dictionary around to check on alternate translations of a particular word.

I just finished install Logos on my ~$115 Acer Windows 8 tablet. I did not have enough space on the internal drive so I stuck it on a 16GB SD card. Instead of making a positive set of desired resources, I went in & cut from my Resources folder stuff I didn't want (like the Perseus set, the extra set of Church Fathers). I got it down to about 1800 resources or 7GB, copied it onto an external drive, then proceeded as above.

Yes, I did the indexing on the SD card as well. Yes, it took forever, not quite 2 days. And, it's a Speed 4, not 10, card.

My initial impression of performance is that it is surprisingly adequate. It's certainly not fast, but as I use Logos mostly as a glorified ebook reader and my biggest other need when on the tab is for cutting & pasting formatted verses into documents and presentations, it should do.

I'm very happy with the outcome so far. I've ordered a much better quality, 32GB SD card and will probably eventually transfer my entire library to it.

I know this practice is totally not recommended by FaithLife, but I'm glad that I've at last found a viable option. Three alternatives would have been better and easier:

An app for Windows like the Android or iPhone one
A better quality web app (The web app has potential but its development is moving at a glacially slow pace. None of the main functions I need on my tablet--access to my reading plans, formatted copying of Bible verses, and the page number visual filter--are available from it, and at the present rate of development, I don't expect to see them up & functioning well before, say, 2022.)
The ability in the desktop program to selectively download resources, thus creating a smaller footprint on the hard drive, like was possible in the Libronix days.

But FL has not seen fit to make any of those alternatives available. So, I'm glad this one works. Thanks again, Dave and Genghis.

The ESV (and most if not all other) Reverse Interlinears in Logos are based on LHB and SBLGNT.

You would not need Hebrew or Greek bibles for that, but the respective *.lbsrvi resources, as shown in the ESV resource info:

Just by way of an update:

I purchased a 32GB microSD drive for my ThinkPad 10.
Uninstalled Logos
Re-installed Logos with 9GB of resources, specifying that it be installed on the microSD drive.
Works first time.
Crashes to desktop after that.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling on microSD with a 1GB subset.
Works first time.
Crashes to desktop after that.
Tried installing on C: drive and scan for 9GB of resources on microSD
Works first time.
Crashes to desktop after that.
Tried installing on C: drive and scan for 1GB subset of resources on microSD.
After indexing, works OK

Thoughts?
