Hopeful Future Baptist assistant pastor asking - Cheapest best way to upgrade to 7.x?

Hello

I currently have Logos Silver Baptist 6.x.  What is the best and cheapest way to upgrade to 7.0 with basic features, no additional useless books (sorry most of the packages seem to offer books I will never make use of) and some useful new functionality.

Is it better to go with Logos Now for a year instead?  Is adopting a wait and see perspective a smart move?

I know you all tired of hearing, seeing, or reading this, but to date I cannot think of a single reason to upgrade.  I half wonder if I should invest in a different Bible software alternative until the dust all settles in or at Logos.

What do you recommend?

Blessings and thanks,

Joshua in Rhode Island

If all you want is some of the new features in Logos 7 then you should be looking at either the Starter or Full Function feature set (depending on which gives you the features you want) - you can compare them at https://www.logos.com/compare/feature-sets

Depending on the cost of these to you then Logos Now is worth thinking about - you would need to weigh up the buy / subscribe costs

And I don't understand the "dust settling" comment

And if you don't see a compelling need to upgrade then I suggest you don't

JoshRI, I can't fathom how you sit around and watch Logos7 go by. The multiview tool alone should be your constant companion, and easily rent as needed. $100 a year and easily worth it.

Josh there is no single on best answer:

    1. The absolute cheapest option: Do nothing and wait for the free core engine upgrade in what is believed to be in February. Until then the latest version of 6, (6.14 I believe will give you the same thing without the version number.

    2. If you don't want to wait till February and are happy to pay something now then you need to decided do you want to pay upfront and have permanent ownership of features or do you want access to features through a membership (rental + other benefits).

        a. If you are happy to go down the membership path then Logos Now is going to give you access to the complete feature set plus early access to Logos 8 features.

       b. if you are not happy to go down the path of a membership program then you have two options:

         i) if you want access to the full (but not complete) Logos feature set the the full feature set is your answer

                https://www.logos.com/product/120029/logos-7-full-feature-set

ii) if you don't want access to the full (but not complete) Logos feature set then the starter feature set would be your answer and will be cheaper than the option  2 b) i)

This is my 2 cents- Logos Now- only spend money on the books you really need. If and when you get a place in a local church, ask for an allowance for books, which would include Logos resources. Depending on the amount use that in conjunction with your personal contribution to increase your library.

Just saying. God bless, may His will come to fruition in your walk with Him- remember itmay not or may not be what you anticipate :)

    Hi doc

Probably worth mentioning that when the free engine is available it will include some (currently unspecified) features not in Logos 6. Phil referenced this at https://community.logos.com/forums/p/129519/841680.aspx#841680

Ok, JoshRI... forget what I wrote ... Multiview might be free!  What games they play.

Sigh..thanks everyone.  I think I will wait and see.  Might listen to Whyndell Grizzard who suggests Logos Now for a year (if I do finally spend the cash).
I heard that the frontend hasnt changed a bit with 7.0.

I am profoundly baffled and mystified by this whole upgrade this time so may just continue to sit it out.

    Josh - just a thought

I don't know how much the Starter feature set would cost you - and you probably have some of them is a Logs 6 silver owner but you may want to consider how much you would appreciate:

    • Addresses in Reported Speech
    • Corresponding Words Visual Filter
    • Custom Homepage Layouts
    • Multiview Resources
    • passage List Visual Filter
    • Text Comparison Version 2
    • Miracles of the Bible Interactive
    • Names of God Interactive
    • Speaking to God Interactive

And https://community.logos.com/forums/t/129206.aspx has links to descriptions of these, and other, Logos 7 capabilities

    Hi Josh,

I can't answer what the best course for you would be, but I can show you what some of the new features can do if you would like to get together.  I have upgraded to a Logos 7 package and subscribe to Logos Now.  I live in Warwick.  By the way the way First Baptist East Providence is the church I grew up in and ordained me many years ago.  Let me know if you are interested and we can arrange a time and place to meet.

Graham...thanks so much. You are such a credit to this forum and the body of Christ, Sir.

Mr. Johnson I just fell out of my chair...small world.  I am attending a different church in West Kingston, RI called THE HARBOR CHURCH but so appreciate your offer.

Which Logos package did you upgrade to?

Pastor Ernie Robillard is still in East Providence and doing an excellent job there.  Leaving the (East Providence) First Baptist Church was not easy for us but my wife and I felt led to after several years of volunteer/lay service.  We help serve coffee at our new church www.theharborchurch.net and we are enjoying worshiping, learning in The Gospel of John and shortly - the minor prophets, and serving and getting to know everyone.

I may move to Logos Now and try it for a bit...but I do appreciate your kindness (and everyone else's in here).

    Hi again Josh

I went with Diamond.  My number is 5-9-5  and the 8-5-8-4 if you would like to see what Logos 7/Now can do before you decide.

    Joshua,

What features do you actually need? If the features you want don't require a dataset (e.g. Multiview), just wait for the core engine upgrade. If the features you want do require a dataset (e.g. Systematic Theologies section of passage guide) you're going to have to spend money. I'd recommend buying over renting.

I have more than $10k invested in Logos and use it every single day, but I'm not planning to upgrade. There simply isn't anything that I see which would make me a better pastor or (aspiring) scholar. The only thing that tempts me are the datasets for the Systematic/Biblical/Confessional passage guide sections, which is only a refined version of what I've been doing using collections for years now.

Dave...I see the wisdom in your post.  I would be better served with more useful commentaries to augment future preaching and keep me from foolish errors (Lord hear my prayer).

I just considered Baptist Bronze and thought I would probably find little use for this set

    Baptist Covenant Theology Collection

which they offer....seems like a lot of tedious volumes to wade through to gain insight about how others in the past felt about baptizing children, right?

Also Dave, your Jesus at the center link is outdated, Sir.  The other two links I will read and make use of later no doubt, thanks.

    Blessings and thanks everyone,

    Joshua

p.s. Can someone post a graphic or screenshot of what Multiview even does please.  Thanks.

Hey, at least acknowledge Leigh Johnson's offer. Seems like you're thanking everybody but him. I don't know, just a thought, who knows you may have already contacted him, if not at least say thanks, but no thanks for the offer.

Leigh and others...thanks for the offer and the kind/wise words.

I just downloaded LOGOS NOW and heard David A. deSilva speaking in a Meditation on the Advent of Christ that took my breath away.

I am a convert to Logos Now and eager to explore the rest of the functionality....but very happy with the video content course that has rekindled something within me....either that or the coffee I drank much earlier is kicking in....either way:

God bless you Leigh and others.

I am beginning to finally get a better grip on the upgrade cycle. At some point the standard packages seem to lose their appeal. Depending on your focus, one or more of the denominational packages have more useful references. The other thing is to get a slightly better package. You get more bang for your buck.

I've never regretted investing in Logos. God has graciously provided all of it.

....I just tried to use the Sermon Starter Guide within Logos Now and found there is no simple intuitive easy way to save what you started.

Still researching but a little surprised.

As per my reply to your other post on this please start a new thread and explain the problem you are seeing - I don't understand

The Guide works like all other Guides ... change the title, add a note etc. and the Guide will be saved automatically under the Guide menu. But in your other thread I thought you were talking about the Sermon document ... under the Documents menu which is also saved automatically. But note there is no relationships between the Sermon Guide and the Sermon document ... but if you have them confused, it would make some of your other comments make sense.
