Issues with highlighting
Hi,
I have an iPad Pro 9.7 and noticed the following issue with several of the Logos apps:
After reading for a while, highlighting by selecting text suddenly goes out of control and large sections are highlighted. When I then delete the highlight, any other sections that might have been highlighted before and were covered by the uncontrolled highlight, are also erased. To correct this, I have to restart the Logos app.
Does anybody else experience this?

In any resource you're reading, tap the Settings Button "Aa" in the top right of the toolbar. Towards the bottom are two options: Swipe to highlight, and Smart Text Selection. Are both of these turned on? The Smart Text Selection could be what is causing large portions of text to be highlighted. Try turning it off and seeing if that fixes the problem.
If not, then it is probably a bug of some sort.
When you delete the highlight of one part of the text, any other highlights contained in that section are also deleted.
Yes if if you delete the larger highlight it deletes all highlights in the area.
FL needs to add (shake-to-)undo support to correct issues like this. It shouldn't be tedious to erase the last highlight, without inadvertently affecting all other annotations in the area.
Thanks to FL for including Carta and a Hebrew audio bible in Logos 9!
I am glad I am not the only one with the problem. To me, it looks like a bug as killing the app and restarting fixes the problem (at least temporarily). Also, it does not happen on my iPhone.
Will try to turn off smart select as a work-around.

I haven't been able to reproduce this issue, so any extra details you can provide will be helpful (including the smart select settings). Please see here for what helps us zero in on problems.
Hi Kevin,
Thanks for following up. It is very hard to reproduce, which is the reason why I haven't reported it earlier. I don't recall it happening on my iPhone, but on my iPad. Here are the details:
- iPad Pro 9.7 with 256 GB, WiFi & Cellular
- iOS 10.0.2
- I noticed it with the Vyrso and Faithlife Study Bible apps. I haven't tried it with the other ones. Version 5.6.2
- Network status: it happens during offline status. Not sure if it also happen online.
- Resource: Bible and Vyrso books
- It happens during highlighting
- Settings: Scrolling view, swipe to highlight, but NO smart text selection
Hope this helps.

I'm seeing this too on the iPad Pro 9.7.
Which issue are you seeing since two separate issues have been reported in the original post? I can reproduce #2 but not #1.
1) After reading for a while, highlighting by selecting text suddenly goes out of control and large sections are highlighted.
or,
2) When I then delete the highlight, any other sections that might have been highlighted before and were covered by the uncontrolled highlight, are also erased.
1. I don't have this issue on iPad Air. The issue are 1) refusal to highlight and 2) highlight a lot (much more than I wanted) and when I delete it, previous highlight is also deleted.
2. On iPad Pro 9.7, I only have the issue when going offline like reading on the train. Many times it even refuses to highlight after 3 or 4 tries.
3. My only solution is to go online and the problem disappear. My note file is very huge and perhaps it needs to sync before it allows new highlights.
My iPad Pro 9.7 has 256GB on iOS 10 but problem started with iOS 9.
If Issue 2 means that after highlighting the same text twice only both highlights can be deleted, then this is not really a bug. It is a feature that could possibly be fine tuned.
However, Issue 1 is a bug. It occurs only sporadically. I haven't been able to reproduce it in a reliable way. All I know is that by killing the app and restarting it, the issue goes away for a while until it is back. I am fairly sure that it has happened when I was offline. But I don't recall if it also happens when I am online.
Similar to Gerard: The issue happens on iOS 10 but also happened with iOS 9.
When I then delete the highlight, any other sections that might have been highlighted before and were covered by the uncontrolled highlight, are also erased. If the highlighter used is the same, then this is "by design" since the highlight notes are merged.

True... I was assuming that they were different highlight styles but if not it is indeed by design.

If it happens again please use Report a Problem under the Help menu so we can take a look at the app logs.
Hi Kevin,
I sent in two Problem Reports. I hope they help you track down things. It is pretty annoying when it happens because other highlights get erased too.
Armin
Thanks for the reports. Were you offline when this occurred, and did you have smart select turned on or off? As Alabama previously mentioned, if the highlight is the same color/style they get merged together and therefore become the same highlight, so that part isn't a bug.
Hi Kevin,
I submitted two more reports. It usually happens when I am not connected to the Internet. So far, it also only happens on my iPad Pro 9.7. I don't recall having had this issue on my iPhone.
Since I mainly use the iOS app when traveling (ie., when I don't have internet), not being able to highlight text due to the fear that several pages get highlighted unintentionally and all previous highlights are erased, this is an annoying bug.
I would assume that if you use the iPad Pro 9.7, "forget" all Wifi connections, and do some highlighting with changing colours, it should occur in less than 30 mins.

Thanks Armin,
We don't need any more log reports as we have enough information to go on. A case already exists for this issue.
I haven't been able to restore highlights from Logos' servers. What happens is that a 1-2 page section of the book gets highlighted as one block. This might override some previously added highlights. Unfortunately, when deleting this highlighted block, the original highlights get erased. And this is when it starts gettting annoying: I then have to reread the previous 1-2 pages to highlight again the sections that I had highlighted. And even worse, during this exercise, the same problem might reoccur, i.e., again, a large section gets highlighted. Usually, this new block highlight cover genuine highlights in even earlier pages. Once I erase this new erroneous block highlight, the previously entered highlights also get erased. So it feels like I have to read the book backwards, having to recreate highlights from earlier pages.
It essentially means that I have given up on using the apps on my iPad Pro. I really hope that a fix can be implemented soon.

A case already exists for this issue and we are fully aware that this is a problem. Again, we know this is a problem and we are completely aware of it.
I just saw this thread. I have been experiencing all the issues reported in this thread on my iPad mini 4, on the Vyrso, Logos, and Verbum apps.
Since the problems are intermittent and very hard to reproduce, I have not reported them, but glad to see that others have.
Reading and highlighting are the main reason I use Logos apps on my iPad mini. Since these problems started occurring, I have reduced my use of the iOS apps, and have also cut down on my Faithlife resource purchases. Reading on the Kindle iOS app has proven to be much more reliable and predictable. Got tired of fighting with the FL apps all the time while trying to simply read and highlight.
Kevin, it's been 5+ months since these issues were reported and logged... any updates on when they will be fixed?
Thanks,
Peter
PL,
I'm sorry this has kept happening to you-- I know it must be frustrating. As Kevin mentioned, we're aware that some users have reported this issue. Currently, one of our developers is investigating. We may reach out with some additional questions. Thanks for your patience.

I also wanted to thank you, Daniel, for your reply.
Please make sure the release notes include a comment when this problem is fixed. The general comment "Various bug fixes and improvements" is too vague. And your colleague didn't like it when I once asked if this fix was included in "various bug fixes".
Welcome to the forums. Given that this software been replaced with a new app for at least 6 years, it is not surprising that it is not fixed. I suspect that you meant to post in the current Mobile app forum rather than in this obsolete software subforum.
