I was just wondering how long you spend in a day studying in Libronix library?

Do you use a customised collection for a particular study? Or do you search the whole library
what's your favourite starting point for a study?

It would be good to see some of your favourite customised collections for your customised studys,
and why you prefer this particular group of books I know personal preference will be influenced
but it's good to see how the power users use the library

Mick, for me it depends. but 30 - 60 is a good estimate.

I worry less about collections, and I spend more time building a layout. Once I have a layout with resources that I want open where I want them, I save them as a layout. For instance, I have two that I use a on a daily basis right now: Bible Study - Isaiah, Bible Study - 2 Timothy. Each has different types of resources open because I understand (gross over statement) Greek, but do not understand Hebrew.

No set time actually.

When I come across a section of the Bible, while I'm reading, that I get the urge to look deeper into, I will run the passage guide, and study it for as long as it takes to get my head wrapped around it.
When I am preparing a message / class, I tend to study until I'm satisfied that I have a working outline and complete message.
My personal studies have been going on for 30 years, and I don't see a time when they will ever be ending.

Answer: A number of hours per day, depending on time availability do to other responsibilities (ie. I've never logged the hours).

Ha! That's pretty accurate for me, so far. I'm still learning L4, beta testing it, collecting info for bug reports, posting those bug reports here, answering people's questions, building up my collections and layouts and guide templates to make my study easier once I get around to actually doing any of it! Apart from those, most of the other user-generated stuff I've got so far (favorites, notes, clippings) are just junk ones I've been using for testing and learning. I am occasionally doing a bit of personal study with it, searching for this or that, etc., but haven't done a full sustained session of 30 minutes or more yet.

I use lots of customized collections. I sometimes search the whole library when I have no idea where what I'm looking for might be found, or I want the broadest possible set of results. But I have set up different collections for Bible Dictionaries, Biographical Resources, Books by [my seminary] Profs, Devotionals, Geographical Resources, Greek Reference, Hebrew Reference, Jewish Background, Journals, Preaching, Sermon Collections, Study Bibles, Systematic Theologies, Worship Planning. (And I'm sure I'm not done yet!)

I use the collections not just for refining a search, but also for the Collections section of a Passage Guide, and to narrow down what appears in the Cited By tool.

what's your favourite starting point for a study?

At this point, I'm still usually studying by serendipity. I start with something I'm curious about, do a search and then follow rabbit trails from there. Or I stumble upon something interesting in one of the resources I didn't know I had (while testing a feature or trying something out to help another user solve a problem), and then I get drawn in and go off on my own study from there. For prayerful reading of and meditation on Scripture, I'm still using my paper Bible.

Once I have to start prepping for the sermon I'm preaching on March 28, I'm sure I'll have some more interesting answers!

Between devotional reading, sermon prep, teaching prep, and Dmin thesis work - probably 15 - 20 hours weekly - or more. I'm at the library now trying to research during a study leave, but took a short break to scan the forums.

My issue now is that since I've upgraded from scholars to platinum and several other collections (WBC, AYBD, etc.) there are so many more resources to consider. I used to feel pretty satisfied with my work and I could put the sermon to rest by Thursday afternoon. Now I struggle because there are so many more rocks to turn over. I'm spending more time in prep now, but feel less prepared. I have learned that there are a lot more questions to answer (and the resources to answer them). I guess that's the price of research - understanding that at the end of the day there is still a lot left to do.

I can't imagine how I'd do all this without logos. And I didn't even send them a valentine card - my bad.

For daily reading-through-the Bible right now I'm using TNIV alongside the IVP Bible Background Commentary.

Prepping for my weekly bible study on Mark I use NASB, NA27, LXX, and all the scholarly commentaries I own: Beale's Commentary on NT Use of the OT, NIGTC, NICNT, Word, Pillar, Tyndale, Hermeneia, Black's, NAC, College Press, in that order. My 3rd choice commentary is the Anchor one by Joel Marcus but since vol. 2 just came out in prepub I use hardcover for that. My favorite collection right now is Archeology, which includes the resources from the "Ultimate Archeology Collection" that I acquired 2 months ago. I love finding articles and pictures that go with that week's lesson, like e.g. gambling practices in the ancient world and pictures of ancient dice.

I'm also trying to spend a couple hours a week reviewing my Greek by working through Black's Learn to Read NT Greek.

For devotional reading I like the Tozer collection.

I aim to spend 1 hour on Bible study per day, sometimes less, sometimes more. I start off with a "real" paper Bible in Greek, or Hebrew and English parallel text. I largely base my Bible study on the Catholic lectionary. Having read the passage, I try to translate it into Albanian, comprehensible to my not very educated Muslim neighbours in the village. If I can't translate it, the problem is usually that I haven't understood it. So I turn to Logos 4. I probably average about 30 mins a day on Logos 4. Then I have various books bookmarked, that I can look into at my leisure - I'd forgotten about them for the last few days.

I've discovered that I can go to the passage guide and open all the commentaries I might want in separate tabs in the same window. I then press F11 to get full page view with the ability to move from tab to tab. I right click on the Bible passage to open that in the original in yet another tab on that page. I can right click on words in the passage to look them up in yet another tab on the same page.

The commentaries I open are, in order of preference> UBS Translator's Handbook, great for explaining the meaning of the passage and giving guidelines how to translate it for another language and culture, Bible Speaks today (NT only, unfortunately), Cornerstone, Tyndale, and possibly ICC (OT only - I bought it before I had discovered UBS). I sometimes need more than one day to explore one reading. Particularly if it's narrative and I am learning to story it at the same time. I certainly would not have the benefit of all these commentaries without the aid of Logos, and it's great when travelling to have only the weight of my computer and Greek NT. Even Hebrew OT I leave behind if I'm just away for a couple of days.

1.) never enough..

2.) Many times throughout the day. I work in an office with several others who like to discuss bible topics on lunch and breaks so there is always something to study....or if some subject catches my eye....then I investigate...

3.) On weekends, I study for several hours a day....when it's quiet...

A couple of hours per day during the week. I try to read about 100 pages of background information on a passage before preaching on it.

I have created collections based on theological viewpoints (ie Wesleyan, Lutheran, Methodist) and by authors. I do search the entire library for certain things only after I have searched a narrower collection and not gotten enough information.

I shoot for an hour a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I'm not in a preaching/ teaching role right now so my study is just for my own growth.

I typically work through a book of the Bible and will pull a few commentaries out of my collection that I'll reference while I study and then dig into other resources to chase rabbit trails or get clarification on an issue. I'll make a layout that includes those resources for that book (ie, Roman's Study, Luke Study, etc...)

Depending on the vagaries of life, I spend about 6-14 hours in Logos per day...8-10 is about standard, I guess. I'm writing a book, so it gives me an excuse to do what I enjoy most...be in the Word.

As far as "collections" go, I'm still using L3 99+% of the time...Notes (or lack thereof), slowness (on a system with a 5.1 Windows rating), and a host of other issues keep me from making the switch. Not sure if I ever will migrate...for my usage, L4 is a more powerful but still inferior option. I'm just thankful I can use my Portfolio in L3 (or most of it, at least...some of my resources are greyed out--what's up with that?) .

I actually am still a bit of luddite when it comes to Bible study. It's just me, my paper bible, colouring pencils and Kay Arthur's studies every morning (anywhere from 15-60 minutes), and OneNote for note-taking. I realize I could use L4 with inductive study keywords but I've come up with my own system over the years...

Actually, there's a question for everyone: can the inductive study symbols included in L4 be added to/modified? That might make a difference for me.

What I do jump into L4 for during bible study is anytime I need to find something *quick*: a quick background lookup of the Baals this morning, for example, (I don't use a study Bible so it's minimal with info) or a "go look up the following verses"

There's no better tool for that kind of stuff, in my opinion.

They can in L3. And currently in L4 beta they can as well (and also import your L3 markups). So if you are unwilling to beta test a potentially unstable release, you should be able to modify/add to highlights very soon.
