How to do a simple search

This may be a silly question, but I still don't see an easy way to do something I do simply on the desktop version of Logos. I am on the latest iPad version of Logos mobile, 6.0.0.0114.

I would like to search the ESV Bible to return all verses that have the word "sheepfold". There should be 8, with 7 of them in the OT.

How do I do that, can you outline the steps for me? It seems so simple but I get mired in complicated steps. Thanks!

Tap the menu button in the lower right.

    Tap search.

Tap on the drop down on the left under the search box and choose your translation.

Make sure Bible is selected in the upper right corner.

    Enter your search words.

Tap on Search in the Keyboard.

Thanks Kevin - this is the problem for me - the step

    and choose your translation

That drop down is called "Top Bibles", and when I tap on it, all that shows is Collections - no Bibles! How come?

Bibles  you have recently had open in the app should appear at the bottom of the dropdown menu

Thanks Graham. So I went to library and brought up ESV. Then hit menu in lower right, for search. Clicked Top Bibles, none there still - it's all Collections. Did I do it correctly?

Yes sounds like you did the right things..

I‘ve just tried it to check and the ESV appeared in the list.

So afraid I don’t know what is going on for you.

Do you have the ESV downloaded? Not that that should matter...

I got back to my desk now, maybe 3 hours later? And ESV is now at the bottom of the list. So I went to library, pulled up another bible NAB, and it was up and I was scrolling through it. I hit menu, Search, and the drop down, ESV was there, but NAB was not.

I bet it will be there later (I do have a very fast Internet, like 600 Mbps download, so even if a download was required it would have happened when I was scrolling through it, right?). But how long will I have to wait for it?

All that said, (1) I wonder how this is supposed to work, and (2) For something as intrinsically useful as Bible searches in Bible software, don't you think it could be done easier? Finding a single Bible at the end of a long list of Collections seems crazy. What if I want to see how many times a word is in another Bible - I have to leave there, go load that Bible, and then re scroll down to the end of a list of Collections to select it once I have waited some non-intuitive period of time? This mandates using Google search every time.

How about making this easier since it's a new re-work and in beta? Please?

    Hi Don

Glad the ESV did appear eventually.

But I totally agree this should be a lot easier.

Hi Graham. Do you think there is any chance FL will comment on this, it is so hard to use? So I went back to search tonight, and ESV is in the drop down, but NAB is not. Both have been up on my app for days. This is so impossible to use, just for a simple search! I can't imagine others don't see this, does no one do bible searches on their mobile devices? It would sure be great to hear from someone either why this is really easy to use and I just don't get it, or yes, we consider bible searches a pretty fundamental use case of a mobile bible app, so we are on it. What do you think?

I don’t know whether anyone from Faithlife will see / comment on this but I do agree it could be a lot better.

I have got used to scrolling down to the bottom of the dropdown menu and choosing the Bible i am interested in.

One possible way forward would be to change how the “in resource” search works.

If you long-press a word, one of the popup options is Search

(The screenshot is from the latest beta but it works the same way in the stable release)

Choosing Search results In the selected word being searched for in a Basic Search across your whole library

If instead, it did a Bible search of the Bible you were reading (and a Basic Search in the Resource If you were reading something other that a Bible) that would give you a focussed search. From there you could change the word to search for something different or change the focus of the search if you wanted to expand it.

Would something like that give you what are looking for?

(And I have no idea how easy this would be to do or whether Faithlife would consider it)

    Hey Don,

Sorry this has been a frustrating experience for you. We know it could be better, and we're hoping to ship improvements to search sometime next year.

In the meantime... it sounds like the app hasn't had a chance to sync, which would make your Bible appear in that list. Once you've viewed the Bible, interact with it (scroll or turn some pages), and then hit the home button on your iPad. When you reenter the app, that should force a sync.
